Elite dangerous alpha 4.0 : 400 billion solar systems galaxy map

Im reading the newsletter where they detail that the space sky is actually now composed of fully modeled objects and not a skybox where they were faking it. 400 billion stars all fully modeled........lol

Well, kinda. lots of nearby stars visible but beyond a certain distance it'll fade into a cloudy galaxy effect. But you can still visit all 400bn.

How is shit like this and No Man's Sky possible? What's the catch? I know in the case of No Man's Sky everything's procedurally generated, but is that the case here as well? Are the 1:1 planets not that deeply-designed? Where's the limitation here?

And if this shit is possible, why hasn't any AAA developer tried it? This is what Mass Effect could be doing (if on a somewhat more limited scale).

It's difficult to turn that type of world generation into a fun game. No Man's Sky actually seems like it has the best shot right now.

This game is very specific for a crowd of hardcore space sim guys who like to explore.

100+ thousand stars around earth are mapped by the real astronomical data, and the rest of the galaxy is procedurally generated. Users will get chance to visit EVERYTHING, but starships have intentional flaw that they are overheating in the hypedrive, preventing users to travel too far with one trip [previous games had chance for hyperspace jump error that could throw you anywhere in the galaxy].

I dont know if Elite is procedurally generating everything beforehand. Star Citizen will have fixed amount of stars in teh galaxy, and the procedural generation of the planets will happen when first player enter the system. After that happens, those planets became fixed.

As for AAA games, they are focused on action, set pieces and guided experience. Don't expect this large worlds from them [at least for now].

That's just for premium beta. It's just a continuation of their kickstarter prices.

The final game will be $50 (available here: https://store.zaonce.net/elite-dangerous.html/) or if you still want it early you can buy $75 for standard beta (unknown start date). However, keep in mind that they are going the expansion pack route. In the future they will release ship boarding and planetary landings as expansions. You can get the expansion pass to give you access to all major expansions for $50 (https://store.zaonce.net/elite-dangerous-expansion-pass.html). The Premium Beta package comes with an expansion pass as well, so you're essentially paying an extra $50 to get in now instead of waiting months to play.

Personally, I got alpha access. Yeah, it was pricey, but I'm a huge supporter of space sims and they seem to be doing a great job on this project.

So they want to charge me $50 bucks for the core game, then nickel and dime me to death with "expansions" that let me do shit I should be able to do in the first place. Yeah...

That's a lot of useless space in the HUD though. I wish we could pull back (forward) a bit and see more space, less useless control panel.

Wow that star map is something else. It actually reminds of looking at the Daggerfall world map a long time ago.

I wish to god someone would make a huge HD Daggerfall clone.

Right, so if I want land, air and space combat/exploration, should I go with this or Star Citizen? Both look absolutely incredible. This has me hyped now.

Well. Elite is going to have planet exploration in an expansion. Now the question is whether Star Citizen is going to be out before Elite get out that expansion. It's arguable at this stage. Star Citizen seems like it's a slow burn at the moment with constant delays of their schedule. Elite on the other hand seems to be progressing faster since it had been worked on far more before turning to kickstarter.

I don't think you understand what the term "Expansion" means in this context. This isn't going to be horse armor DLC. This are planned substantial updates coming further down the line.

Not sure I'd call that "nickel and diming".

God this looks incredible. Please don't be another X-Rebirth. That had all the cool things this has but failed at everything. The UI worries me. It looks cool but is it style over substance? Looking away to change stuff might be really annoying.

No way. I mean from what I've seen of the videos Elite is already a huge leap over the mess that is Rebirth, and is a vastly larger game world to explore and trade in. I will agree that the "looking sideways" to view some screens bothers me in the same way that Rebirth's ship interface did because it's just bad UI, but at least the animation time is far less here.

That UI does look a bit less useful than it should be. Seems like it's made for easier controller use. Some simple options like using the landing gear should be always visible and interactable on screen instead of going inside a menu that obscures your front view (i.e. tilting your head to your right). I mean, it's debatable, since you use that option somewhat rarely but I'm pretty sure a lot of people will keep forgetting about it. Although, I'm sure there's a hotkey so ultimately it might not be that much of a bother.

It's interesting to see how the concept of having this grand scale gameplay of mixing on foot FPS with space sims inside a vast procedural universe has existed for so long and that there are actually games that have attempted this before, but none of them have ever been polished enough or have always missed some crucial component. Even though we've seen games that are just FPSs or just space sims, nailing all of those concepts into one well polished and coherent game turns out to be a gargantuan task, almost a game developer's pipe dream. I think No Man's Sky will actually be the first to try to make the basics feel smooth and polished, to finally make a well made game that has the basics of space flight, combat, seamless planetary landing and on foot FPS gameplay. Once someone makes a standard, others will at least try to copy it and improve on it.

I remember playing frontier elite 2 on the amiga like it was yesterday.

I'd waited years for braben to finally do another one.

I remember using carrying 1t of trash and clicking under the eject button for a massive cargo hold, I set the computer up for hours. That and selling the life support pods with passengers on board for infinite cash.

And thargoid searches.

...and I want this game. BADLY.

In my case, i have the warthog HOTAS ready (bought when A-10 sim got out), with saitkek combat rudders and trackIR5. Waiting on customer release of oculus. Sad that i didnt have access to this game when i had the dev kit 1 of oculus, would've of been amazing even in low res.

i've been aware of this game, but i clearly wasn't aware enough. this footage has ruptured my anticipation gland. it's pretty mortifying how a few seconds of a me too simcade driving game/third person cinematic action game can whip the forum into a 30 page frenzy while something like this, which looks to be the triumphant rebirth of an entire genre, floats by with barely a ripple made.

and this is a 2014 release?

Looks great, but that is expensive. Also, the beta is more expensive then the final release. Eh... I thought we were helping them out get rid of bugs, stress test servers and what not? Early access... sigh.

Wait so the alpha is was even more expensive then the beta? Are we supposed to feel extremely privileged, enough to pay €240 to test a game?

The alpha/beta prices are high because they were on higher tiers of kickstarter pledges. They can't really lower them after the kickstarter campaign without shitting on the people who supported them.

Ah right, it's another Kickstarter project. No need to go into debate about it either, opinion won't change these prices. Instead, i'll just pick it up on release. Will it be available on Steam? Anyone knows?

Those are very useful for navigation, though. You're not restricted to flying straight so they're necessary for more complex maneuvers.

I totally get why they would be helpful, but I think I'd rather try to deal with just instruments and objects in the game world. Space shuttle pilots seem to be able to navigate without fake streaks in their window.. :)

For those using warthog hotas, is there predefined bottoms for the game or do you have to create your own? I really hate using that target software it comes with

I don't think it's been confirmed either way. The game already has its own MMO-style launcher/patcher so they'd only be using Steam for visibility.

Still, I think Elite's more likely to go with Steam than Star Citizen.

You don't really need to use target unless you plan on doing some relatively advanced mapping. Elite has a controls menu where you can map your buttons and axes.

The game also looks great in the Rift. There were a few issues with shadows that I had to turn off but all in all it is so far an amazing experience in VR.

Don't spoil your experience by playing it with an XB360 controller. Although it does support it, I highly recommend getting a flight stick. They're even cheaper than an XB360 controller too...

Any recommended flight sticks? Price is no issue

"CH Products Fighterstick looks good, would it work ok for this?"

Yep, I use a CH stick and throttle myself and haven't had any problems in the old single player build they gave to Premium Beta backers.

I dont know if Elite is procedurally generating everything beforehand.
If one star would take one byte to calculate before hand, 400B of them would cost 372.5GiB of memory..
Kind of doubt that they made them beforehand. ;)

Also Frontier already had billions of stars and visitable planets and the game took ~450kB of disk space and worked with 1MB of memory.
This should explain it a little.

Can't believe how cool this looks, at first I thought it might have been something like Space Engine, but then I saw the 1st person view and graphics. Subbing to this, thanks for the info.

I really hate the cockpit interface. Looks tacky or something and not quite as futuristic and sleek as I think it could.

Everything else sounds really great, if not overly ambitious. Sceptical still, but fingers crossed.

"Would I be fine without a throttle?"

Yeah, it has a throttle on the stick (jog wheel on the left hand side). You'll need to map a few things to your keyboard, but it's fine.
