Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

Okay, I think all of ya'll gotten this question a hundred times now.

Should I get Horizon with or not for the PS4 release ? What does it add ?

It adds the ability to go on the surface of planets and roam around in a buggie. I think it's well worth it, but I guess you can get the add-on at a later date. So if you're new to ED, I'd say get the base game at first and see if you're into it and then get Horizon.

PS4 version includes horizons

The commander deluxe includes Horizons, not the base version as far as I can tell on the PS Store.

BTW, does the Deluxe version contain the season pass, to get the Commanders and such that are (or are coming) to PC?

If you want to be able to use the engineers to increase things like weapon damage or jump range, you'll need Horizons. Also Horizons lets you drive around in a moon buggy! Highly recommend it!

On mobile but Obsidian just posted a Lavecon qa summary about 2.4. Lots of details. Nothing HUGE but a lot of QoL stuff and things that have been requested. Search and Rescue missions, hostages, repair limpets, crime and punishment, etc.

Deluxe definitely contains season pass.

Well preordered Deluxe Edition. Hopefully this isn't too hard for me, really just wanted to casually play it, at least try it out.

Tutorial might put you off with all the flight options etc. but push through it and you'll be fine.

I think I'm gonna be a space trucker at the beginning and then slowly work my way to some sort of bounty hunter. :d

About how long is the tutorial?

I hope the new search and rescue stuff is worthwhile. It could be the foundation for some good missions, though if the mechanics and rewards are poor then it's pointless.
Collecting escape pods and black boxes is currently a "sit in deep space and wait for a USS" activity. I hope they'll add some mechanics for these missions and we won't have to wait until v3.0.
One of the things I dislike is that a lot of the cool-sounding missions (e.g. 'liberate' cargo) have terrible rewards yet require a specialised ship loadout (interdictors, hatch breakers, cargo space and combat capability). As a result, I've never bothered with one.

I don't like these hints that Thargoids are totally immune to regular weapons. I was hoping for some crossover. I hope you just need special equipment AND some good old fashioned pew pew, rather than totally parallel human/alien combat systems.

Crime and punishment improvements are welcome and long overdue. I hope the devs have finally got over their "but exploits!!!!" aversion to having player bounties be a thing. It seems like the suicidewinder fix is in part to prevent 2 friends taking turns to get a huge (player) bounty then killing each other to claim it.

The limpet and messaging QoL improvements are nice. Repair limpets could be useful, and give an interesting choice between stacking hull reinforcement for short-term survivability or adding repair limpets for long-term sustainability (e.g. for RES bounty hunting or conflict zones).

So they will give us a recipe for limpets. Just make the damn things permanent. Have they ever explained why limpets go pop instead of just being refueled?

Limpets just piss me off everytime I think about them. They should not be a consumable that take up damn cargo space.

Every patch I'm always going to complain about limpets. The game would be so much better if they were refuelable. Especially mining.

About how long is the tutorial?

As long as you want. There is no mandatory tutorial IIRC. Once you start the actual game there is no handholding*.
There are some training missions in the main menu that are worth doing at some point though!

If you just want the basics, it's probably 20 minutes to do the take-off, travel and landing tutorials and maybe 30 minutes to try some combat tutorials. The standard newbie advice is not to worry if you can't do the advanced combat missions. The tutorials are essentially a safe space to die without it costing anything. The enemy AI has been dramatically improved since launch, so the main lesson to learn is to never attack 'wings' of more than 1 ship unless you know what you're doing. Getting outnumbered is bad, even if they are in crappy ships.

IMO it's best to do the basic training missions then start the game. Re-run the training missions or use google if you forget how something works. My google history is full of stuff like "Elite unknown fragment where?", "Elite wave scanner how to use?" and "Elite can I kill Marco Qwent?"

If you have time or get stuck and need help, this playlist has some thorough tutorials, though they are a bit slow and tedious:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLmX89YRYfWK3QPK8tkUsiXVYqPTdJ4z07

The only fundamental rule is "Never fly unless you can afford the rebuy!"
If you die, you have to pay 5% of the ship cost and 5% of any upgrade costs (but the starter ship is free). If you can't afford it, you lose the upgrades and if you can't afford the basic ship cost then you get sent back to a crappy sidewinder starter ship.
It sounds a lot harsher than it really is, since player deaths should be rare unless you're a very combat-heavy player. You can check the insurance rebuy cost on the right-side panel somewhere. Note that insurance is automatic - you don't have to buy a policy or anything, unlike Star Citizen. What Elite calls 'insurance rebuy' is basically a 5% excess/deductible.
The archetypal newb error is to spend all your money on a fancy new ship, then crash it into the dock (because it handles differently) and then be unable to afford the rebuy insurance cost.

*Actually, the first time you ever launch there might be some forced "pre-flight checks" that make sure you know the basic controls. This takes about a minute to complete and is never repeated.

I remember when I first started Elite I was confused at hell at how Bounty Hunter missions worked. Is it still super confusing or did they make it a little clearer on where you are supposed to find the target?

Being able to create a radial menu on the DS4 using Steam Big Picture Mode is very helpful. I would hope they do something similar using the touchpad for PS4 players

PS4 has just received version 1.02 in the UK. Two patches one after the other

God, I have been waiting nearly 20 years for this day (I go all the way back to the original on the Acorn Electron)

Can't even imagine just starting Elite again. It's a great experience at the start. To have all the existing systems there from the jump AND Thargoid discoveries going on the same day? Man...

Can't wait to play Elite. Bought the deluxe commander, but I'm going to have to wait. I work tomorrow, and I know myself pretty good. If I start that game I'm going to get, tops.... 3 hours of sleep and then be regretting it in the morning

How does it play on a PS4 controller?

Pretty great. You can bind anything and everything to the controller so you should feel in control. It's probably even better now that the PS4 version has touchpad gesture support.

I would grab the PS4 version if I could use my PC CMDR progress. Don't feel like grinding again.

Oo man, that thargoid base. I promised my self I wouldn't jump in until 2.4 tho ...

Welcome ps4 players, I wish I could replay the first 200 hours of the game, enjoy.

I think they are aiming for 30 on the base PS4 and higher for the Pro.

Hopefully Digital Foundry does some testing with it.

ObsidianAnt did sort of a general introduction for the PS4 version. Nothing in here for current players but a good overview for new players.

Looks like there's a performance mode and quality mode. I still can't believe they don't let you change the hud color. Such a simple thing to implement. That orange is so irritating on the eyes

Speaking of ObsidianAnt, did you guys check out the news from LaveCon about 2.4?

- Limpet synthesis
- Repair Limpets (can be used on yourself as well as others)
- A suite of weapons, modules and devices' that will be used against the Thargoids
- Science and Research contact. Search and Rescue contact. Interstellar Factors Contact?
- Inbox improvements
- Some Crime and Punishment updates including the Sidewinder bounty dodge.
- New Galaxy-wide Pilot's Federation Bounties when you fire on another player. (Unless in an Anarchy system)

With the way they are doing HUD colors it's very easy to break the UI of the game. I can see why they haven't implemented it yet.

It would be doable though, you'd just have to have limits on what you can choose as to not break the entire UI.

Either that or redo how they do the UI to make it so you can't actually break it. Don't see that happening though.

Deluxe version bought on ps4. Super excited to finally play this. My gaming pc is incredibly long in the tooth, and I don't have an xbox one. Been a long time being jealous every time I saw this thread pop up!

No idea where to start... Space trucking? Piracy? Bounty hunting? Human trafficking? Maybe just some good old exploration. Unlock already!

Wanted to start as an explorer on ps4, outfitted my ship with a scanner and... no luck, no new data, I guess since powerplay is in play there's no point in trying to scan anything within its confines, but then again, how am I to get any money as an explorer if my ship can't make the jumps necessary to leave those system... ehhh...

Guess I'll go with the good ol' bounty hunter in some low threat areas.
