Ellen Page comes out as gay

I see the homophobes that can't actually act in their usual manner on Gaf have now moved on to the "Who cares"? line of thought. You're going to have hard time convince me you're not a bigot because if you aren't you wouldn't actually give a shit that a celebrity of all people is getting special treatment when they get special treatment regardless.

wait, I really hope your not accusing me of being a homophobe.

I have no prejudice towards this kind of sexual preference, and shame on you for jumping to that conclusion.

I think its best I bow out, the butting of heads isn't getting me anywhere.

Congrats.

There has been no butting of heads, just curiosity about your insistence upon that for which there has been no evidence or definition.

Perhaps if you came out with your meaning, you would not feel so persecuted.

Uh-huh.

I seem to recall someone saying something about it being hard to define something so broad...

Then you can stop whining about a speech and the attention it got that made people feel better about themselves. Shame on you for not being able to logically understand your complaints are not needed here.

And labeling me falsely makes you any better in regards to the discussion at hand.

And again, I think its best I move on considering insinuations are being made towards me being a homophobe, when really all I'm looking for is equality for both gay and straight people.

And labeling me falsely makes you any better in regards to the discussion at hand.

It's not a discussion. It's you making pointless complaints. How can anyone respond to useless shit like this:

The whole "coming out" thing is getting old.

Congrats you're gay, its really not a big deal

Especially when it is a big deal for her being in Hollywood and for the content of the speech. She literally explains everything in the speech that you obviously didn't watch and just had to comment on. You started the conversation in this manner and don't get to whine when people don't see what a great person you are.

In this particular instance the special treatment would have to come from the media attentions on her coming out rather than the reason for or why, and I was under the impression that her support for LGBT was much more important, gay or straight.

Should have at least watched the speech before commenting. It's less than 10 minutes long.

A lot of people in this thread would LOVE a world where someone coming out wouldn't make the news. But christ, it isn't hard to understand why this speech is deserving of so much attention. The world is largely homophobic. When you have role models coming out and normalizing homosexuality, you bet your ass you want to spread this news like wildfire so that people keep talking about gay rights. Making comments about how this shouldn't make the news helps nobody in the fight to make homophobia a relic of the past.

Seriously watch the video before you post. All the emotion is there to understand why this is so important.

You think the attention being given to this speech is an expression of inequality?

Ahahahaha, oh man. That's good. Yeah, best to run away with your tail tucked now, I agree.

If only there was something you could do to clear up all this confusion.

I haven't really, care to explain why the big deal?

She's gay, but she's still Ellen page in the end, nothing really changes. Why do we continue to make such a big deal out of being gay?

Wow. Sounds like you are missing a big chunk of what the idea of 'coming out' means.

I just think a few of the posters currently posting should watch the speech again and listen to the message

Was going to post the same thing. There are many more important issues she refers to besides just coming out.

Heres the transcript of her speech btw

and you have absolutely no right to falsely label me because what I speak of doesn't bode well with the discussion.

Its really quite weird to see some people in favour of the speech, pretty much do the opposite of the message in said speech.

Holy crap....

Yeah sure....

Oh yes, we should be more tolerant of the intolerant, right?

This is a tolerance for intolerance argument, repackaged.

Stop it.

Would a straight person acting in equal receive the same kind of treatment?

LOL at ignoring the years of systematic oppression and hatred that continue into this day. You demand equality when there is none, as if your acceptance of difference is the end-all be-all of society's conflicts.

Stop what?, what have I said wrong?, the message in the speech very clearly said:
The world would be a whole lot better, if we just made an effort to be less horrible to each other.

If we took just five minutes to recognise each others beauty instead of attacking each other for our differences.
And yet, some people for the speech seem to be doing exactly this, its just very strange.

Yea, criticizing people for coming out definitely shows your huge support for gay people. Maybe you should do some research on a subject before you pretend to support a cause.

And make sure to watch her speech. It's only 7 minutes of talking. Hopefully you will then realize why it is important and even if you still think it is not than at least you should be able to appreciate the general message. Because largely what she said can be applied to everyone and is not necessarily focused on LGBT.

So people saying "nope, man, I'm pretty sure it is kind of a big deal" is being horrible to each other. Unlike saying "lol, this is irrelevant, who cares if it makes people feel good".

I think this conversation would go a lot better if you stopped beating around the bush.

Beating around what bush?, my original point was a few posters (not the whole thread) should listen to the message again and perhaps also act on it, some (I'll say that again, some) of the posts over the last few pages haven't exactly been great.

I mean calling someone a homophobe (for example), based on a few short forum posts isn't exactly a good thing and IMO is quite the opposite of what the speech message seemed to imply (to me)..

You need to stop with these kind of generalities. If you have something to say to someone, then say it and they can respond to you. Don't call out nebulous "posters" and then argue against them. I'm still trying to figure who and what you are talking about. The past few pages have been circular arguments due to a total lack of specificity.

In follow up posts he is not denying that he is in fact accusing delta25 of being a homophobe. I thought that one went a little bit too far tbh.

I do agree that post went a bit too far, thanks for pointing it out. I will say that from observing my facebook feed that the "who cares" line does seem to be a common response by those who are not exactly accepting of gays. They are willingly ignoring why this is such a big deal, in both the Michael Sam and Ellen Page situations.

Nothing quite says 'ally' like "will shit on your coming out until the cows come home and lift nary an unkind word against homophobes". Advisory: if you do this, congrats, you're a part of the fucking problem.

I'd classify being hostile to a gay person for coming out as homophobia.

I don't think he was really intending to be hostile with his "being gay is no big deal" comment. Merely ignorant and not understanding of the issues and why it is important. From what I could gather he has no problems with gay people, he just wished for it to be commonplace by now and not worthy of news anymore. Unfortunately he failed to understand that this is not the case in the slightest in the current world and he also failed to express his thoughts in a tactful manner and instead chose the ignorant approach. Him apparently refusing to watch or read her speech is pretty weird though and made me finally give up to see where he is coming from.

Now both are banned. So whatever I guess.

Dang, it's not necessary to lump together two different problems to raise the scale even more. It's important to discern what exactly what exactly those people are being hostile towards, and i don't see them being hostile towards the act of coming out or Page being gay, but to the relevance that such news have and the wide congratulatory sentiment that has governed the subject. Not to imply that it is an any less hostile and harming opinion to have, but it's different from homophobia, though it may (perhaps unwittingly) be as damaging.

It is a crude and immature understanding of what the contemporary LGBT realities are, and how to approach them, but lets keep apples with apples.

edit, what dragonbane said too

Really happy and relieved for Ellen, she's a great actress and from what I can tell a super cool person. I definitely have to give her speech a listen. I'm thrilled that acceptance of the LGBT community has been on the rise in recent decades, but there's still plenty of teens dealing with bullying and suicidal ideation. IMO, they don't need more stereotypically 'gay' characters on TV sitcoms and movies, they need more actually gay people to present themselves as role models - to show gay youths that they are in good company, and that it will get better. This move by Page and all the others in recent memory is really remarkable and should be applauded because it is truly important.

Just listened to her speech. Didn't expect it to be so comprehensive and good. She's young enough to be relevant to those who are struggling with it at formative ages. I'm sure she's helped a lot of people with it. I'm sure she'll save lives with it.

I know it's easier to be brave when you've already earned enough to retire wisely on, working in an industry that's more gay friendly than most, but it still took it out of her. The fact that someone in such a position felt she had to wait so long says volumes on how we we have to go.
