Ellie's Design: Ellen Page, Ashley Johnson and...a little boy?

Weird thread. But yeah I think she resembles Ashley Johnson the most.

People saying she acts and sounds like Ellen Page need to look up interviews of Ashley Johnson. Her and Ellie are so much alike.

Didn't you know that Ellen Page is the only actor to corner the market in youthful exuberance ...

Ellie looks a lot like Ellen.

Their names have a single letter difference.

She was clearly an inspiration, imo.

Anyone saying they look nothing alike is weird.

I can also see slight features that look similar to Ashley. The eyes and mouth, though I wasn't paying attention to the changes ND made over time.

And yes, The Road was always a parallel for me, and they said it was an influence on design.

I think it was mix of all three for sure.

Yeh, that's probably because she's the actress who played her.

In my mind, the inspiration had to at least partially be Ellen Page - it's too coincidental she looked that much like Ellen Page while also being named Ellie.
At least Quantic Dream confirmed Sony requested ND to change the model cause it looked too similar to Ellen Page which already signed for their project. So it's pretty likely the concept artist got his inspiration from her.

"For us it wasn't too much of an issue because we knew we were working with Ellen Page," reflected Fondaumiere, "so it was then a problem on the side of Naughty Dog to change the model, I guess. I don't think that they were really working on the Ellen Page character; I think they had a similar intention, in the sense that they were probably also looking for a character that was both fragile and strong.

"They probably inadvertently were inspired by Ellen Page, but indeed, they had to slightly change the model such that she wouldn't look like Ellen Page because, indeed, we have Ellen Page," he smiled.

He hasn't talked to Naughty Dog about it since. "No," he said, "it was something that was clarified, I would say, very early on and there was no reason to talk about it afterwards."

What? Because of
her sexuality
?
Yes. It was very timely. ND will do anything to mimic Ellen.

But thinking about it a little bit more you may be on to something. Given what Naughty Dog was going for, I can see how they might have wanted to avoid the typical trapping of this kind of girl character. Like the overly cute Ashley(RE4), Elizabeth(Bioshock) or all those other zombie father simulators where the little girls function is to be adorable(Joels daughter lol). Ellie is a tougher strong character and its good that her appearance follows that.

I think she looks nothing like Ellen page.

Neither do I, but many people still claim she does. Did you read the thread?

Hmm.. you may be on to something. Both early Ellie and new Ellie look more like that boy than Ellen Page.

Do all young brunette girls look like Ellen Page to you? Because that's the only possible explanation I can think of. The final version of Ellie really doesn't look that similar to Ellen Page.

I am beyond frustraited that there's people who still claim final Ellie looks like Ellen Page. Debut Ellie definitely did, but final Ellie doesn't share a shard of resemblance. How can people say otherwise?

Same, final ellie not only looks better but way different from Page.

First images and artworks looked like that movie star, but the "newer" ones have little resemblance. I hope there won't be another remaster so that this can stay near the ice.

No resemblance at all!

See? Weird...

No resemblance at all!

Different eyes, different mouth, different lips. Just because a cherry picked picture has her in a similar position doesn't mean they look the same.

There is always going to be a resemblance because, as I said in my OP, Ellen Page is a brunette, petite, youthful woman, and because Ellie's original model was likely based on her. However, the new model shares about as much actual facial similarities with Ellen Page as the Justin Bieber-plastic surgery lookalike with his source.

It's your unintentional bias from Ellie's first reveal and certain elements of her personality (and name) that causes you to still say that.

I was shocked when I learned Ellen Page wasn't in TLOU. I thought "Wow, she must really like videogame work and be bored of movies."

I agree with all of the sources you listed.

Naughty Dog certainly has a track record for "borrowing" famous actors:

And I do think the original Ellie looked to be inspired by Ellen Page. I think Naughty Dog changed Ellie because of it--to distance her from the upcoming Beyond: Two Souls, not to have her match the voice actress.

And I'm glad I did. I'd hate to be constantly reminded of Juno while play The Last of Us.

Original Ellie design was definitely Ellen Page, but the redesign closer to release made her look way different. She looks much closer to Ashley Johnson now.

It's still Ellen Page to me dammit.

Thank you for rekindling my crush for Ashley Johnson though. Playing a bunny ranch girl in CSI was her best role for me.

btw, The Road is an awful movie. Awful in the context of being one of the most depressing movies I've seen in a long while.
