this reminds me of those guys that stole Mr Rogers' car who ended up feeling guilty and returning it.

It doesn't seem like this has turned into too huge a story which is pretty surprising.

Won't believe this is true unless absolutely proven. Guy seems like such a cool dude and I doubt he would jeopardize everything..

seriously hope it's not true.
Guy admitted he made it up. If it happened his lawyers wouldn't put out that statement. There would be a giant cash settlement if he had a shred of evidence to back up his claim. Which he clearly didn't.

I'd like to be wrong, but I don't see how it could be. The cultural line between pedophilia and what he actually did is just too blurry, particularly given the industry Clash works in.
Except he didn't do anything. The guy recanted.

He had sex with an (apparently) 18-year-old when he was in his mid-forties. I'm not saying that should be considered "doing anything," but the culture is what it is.
The thing is what makes it sad to me is if a mid 40s celebrity had sex with a 18 year old girl no one would find the situation too questionable.

**BREAKING NEWS**

Accuser recants Allegations!

The man who accused Kevin Clash, the voice and puppeteer of the “Sesame Street” character Elmo, of an underage sexual relationship has recanted that claim, his lawyer said on Tuesday. The reversal came a day after the claim was first published by the gossip Web site TMZ.

Mr. Clash has taken a leave of absence from Sesame Workshop, the organization that produces “Sesame Street,” to challenge the allegations.

Andreozzi & Associates, a law firm that said it represented the accuser said in a statement that “he wants it to be known that his sexual relationship with Mr. Clash was an adult consensual relationship.” The statement added, “He will have no further comment on the matter.”

The accuser’s identity has not been disclosed.

Mr. Clash said through a spokeswoman: “I am relieved that this painful allegation has been put to rest. I will not discuss it further.”

Sesame Workshop had no immediate comment on when Mr. Clash would return to work. But the organization said in a statement Tuesday afternoon, “We are pleased that this matter has been brought to a close, and we are happy that Kevin can move on from this unfortunate episode.”....

Good, but not great. As pointed out above, there's still a problem when someone uses a position of authority or respect to foster a relationship with an underage person that later turns sexual. It may not be illegal, but it's still wrong to me. When you are entrusted to work with younger teens, you have a duty to not create those relationships. It's about boundaries.

Wasn't he on the Daily Show? Also lmao @ him sending emails from his work address, what an idiot...

Should allegations like this be so freely released to the media? Once the genie is out of the bottle with accusations of rape or pedophilia, you're stuck with that mark. Asshole accusers can recant their comments, but your name is ruined.

As usual, it is all about context. I don't think this is true for everybody.

My old pastor meet his wife during confirmation education. She was way younger than him. He just started, so he was not that old yet and a few years later they became a couple and are married now and have kids. Still he is 15 years older than she is.

Also a former classmate of mine is gay and he also had a long time relationship with an older partner. I think he was also almost 20 years older.

I think it is very difficult to make general assumptions like this. Relationships are complicated and I would not want not judge something like that. It is always bad when people are using their "power" to get into relationships. On the other hand, love is also a strange thing and a lot of very unlikely things can happen.

This whole thing is very sad on so many levels.

a man who now claims he had a sexual relationship with Clash when he was 16 and Clash was 45.

Clash has acknowledged having a sexual relationship with the accuser but insists it only took place AFTER the accuser was an adult.

So 18 and 47, not 16 and 45...

Yeah, I'd agree with this. It's like the student who starts dating the teacher right after they leave school or come of age. Maybe the sexual side did not start until then, but the groundwork for the relationship is often pretty clearly laid before hand when one side of the relationship is still a minor.

If you get hush money you tend to you know, not claim to the public you had under-age sex with the guy first and then admit you made it all up.
He had to show he wasn't playing. You don't get a law firm just to air your dirty laundry. If Clash hadn't paid up, out would come the emails and photos.

TMZ should get kicked in the nuts.

edit: speaking of TMZ, the site is claiming their "sources" are telling them that a possible six figure cash settlement was discussed between the two parties.

It is about context, and I think I explained the context in which I find a problem pretty well. Just having an age gap is not a problem in itself at all. It about how the relationship starts, and whether someone took advantage of a position of trust in creating the relationship. Even in your pastor example, if they didn't start dating until later, no problem with that. That means they respected the boundaries.

man thats awful. really hope Clash can get his life back together, never saw the documentary. but he still seemed like a really nice guy nonetheless

Sad that Clash's career is pretty much destroyed after this.

Yep. The paedogeddon only needs to be mentioned once, and your career in the media is over (although in this case I'd imagine the admittance of out-of-wedlock gay sex will probably finish him if the somehow manages to survive paedogeddon).

So he was 18 after all. What a total douchebag.

Of course there's always going to be that lingering suspicion with people, thinking the guy got paid off to keep quiet.

Who says? This evolved over days and the outcome is known quickly. I believe people never hear the 'truth'because they lose interest and it comes out months or years later. This is a fundamentally different story and timeline. I have hope that he can bounce back.
