ELTTP - Resident Evil 2

SS4Gogita

Henshin!
As Resident Evil 7 approaches, I wanted to play through the entirety of the Resident Evil series since I had only played REmake, RE0, RE4, and through the first disc of Code Veronica.

I'm on Resident Evil 2 right now, and I'm really digging it so far. I don't mind the controls since REmake got me used to the tank system, and while some of the environments are inherently less creepy than a secluded mansion deep in the forest, or a train, or [insert other RE setting here], the atmosphere is still fantastic and keeps you on your toes. Playing through this is getting me really excited for REmake 2.

The main reason I wanted to make a thread though is I had a question about some of the rooms in the game. Specifically, there's a room that you come up through a hatch from the sewer area, and this room is identical to one found in Resident Evil Zero (with both even featuring a typewriter). I believe if you try to open the hatch in Zero it says it's locked and I don't remember ever going down it at any point in that game. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if these are indeed supposed to be the same locations and this is a reference or if perhaps they just lifted the room since I know at one point they had to go back on RE0 and re-do quite a bit of the game. The room even leads out to a warehouse-looking area linked to a large turn-table platform in both games.

I'm curious mostly because I think that's a really good reference if it was indeed supposed to be that.

Here is the room in question:

Edit: Whoopsie. Probably should have put this over in Gaming. My bad, could a mod help out please?
Edit2: Now I'm kinda curious to see how many people think I'm talking about the movie when I'm actually talking about the game, lol.

Love how clear it is that people don't read the OP in their rush to find an image to post.

as for RE2, still one of my favorites. The movement from one location to the next worked really well, and still kept you feeling confined. Heck, the few times you end up outside almost felt unsafe because of how open the street was.

Also, that room is definitely identical, but I don't think it was in the same spot...so probably just a lifted element to save development time.

Haha, yeah. I was waiting for someone to make a joke about this belonging in Gaming, but it seems you're the only one who actually read anything.

The only thing that makes me think it's a legitimate reference is not just the fact that the rooms are identical, but it leads to other identical areas/rooms. If they were going to lift a room, that one is generic-looking enough that they really could have put it anywhere, but they didn't.

Not gonna lie, I LOVED this movie back in high school. Had a nerdgasm with my best friend when the doctor said "I want him in the Nemesis program".

On topic, OP, that IS the same room in RE2. The events of RE0 take place before the outbreak and you revisit the factory in RE2.

It's the same room. In fact the entire area, including the large lift with the machine on it, and the bottom floor of the lift (where Rebecca fights Tyrant by the elevator door), simply overlap with areas you explore further in RE2.

I don't see any reason to think it's anything other than a direct reference. Just a neat way the two games fit together.

I thought the whole point was to pretend you were talking about the movie since it was posted in the wrong side.

On topic. I've never finished RE2 so maybe I should do that.

There was a debate on that area in the RE community thread. I personally feel it's not a stretch. At least bit that umbrella would have similar areas that look the same.

What's the best way to play this game today?

Emulated PSX/Dreamcast/GameCube version maybe? PC release?

The psx version on the psn store is good. I have the GameCube "not remastered" version and that one was pretty good too but feels disappointing after the first one was remade so perfectly.. Never tred emulated versions.

Yeah even with version differences and changes, any of them are fine to play really. Though technically, DC is usually said to be the best version.

Had no issue with the PSN version playing it last year.

Haven't played REmake in a number of years but, even playing the game for the first time 15+ years after release I think RE2 makes a strong case for being the best game in the franchise.

For replays the GC version is absolutely superior, as it's the only version that allows you to skip the cutscenes. Also it works better through Dolphin than the original PC release.

Bravo team stumbling upon Birkin's lab was probably the second most nonsensical thing about Zero.

The first is the magic elevator.

Make sure you play all four scenarios, OP. Don't make the mistake of just playing two scenarios and thinking that's it. ;)
I swear to god, there better be 4 scenarios in the RE2 remake...

What about the singing leech master who is transgender?
And is also the same old man seeking revenge at the same time?

The Dreamcast version for its increased difficulty modes. Probably the Japanese version, because it gives you two higher difficulty modes - the Japanese one is probably slightly better balanced of the two and perhaps in comparison to the original game. It can be a challenge, but it evokes a sense of despair that matches the tone of the game.

It is also better looking and can be played with VGA ... if you're still able to hook that up somehow.

My money is on the Gamecube version as being superior.

Both versions are really a straight port of the PS1 version but the polygons are steadier and the textures smoother. However, that's about it; neither version has high resolution backgrounds nor upgraded models, so it still looks like a PS1 game.

However, the Dreamcast version is missing some music that is present in the GC version.

Here's an in-depth video going through all the differences with all the different versions:

This was a fantastic sequel to 1. So much replayability and I liked references to the original protagonists, such as you exploring the STARS office and reading a letter from Chris - all that kind of stuff.

The 'tyrant' of this game also made for a nice enemy.

I can't wait to play it again.

The only redeeming quality of that movie was Jill Valentine.

It was the worst thing though? Hard feat too considering how much trash the movie has.

Anyways RE2 the game is a masterpiece of its time. Kinda dated though, really needs the remake.

I'll probably just wait for the remake. Surely they are going to remake 3 too right? Its the only game left unless you count those spin offs.

Imo, quite possibly the best direct sequel ever made. Still my favourite Kamiya game.

Resident Evil 2 is still probably my favorite out of the whole franchise. They tried a lot of different things to set it apart from the original and for the most part they nailed all of them.

Very high hopes for REmake 2.
