Noooooooo whaaaaaaat. I think a dark version more reminiscent of how horrific fairy tales used to be portrayed (like grimm and hans christian anderson) would have been amazing for Beauty and the Beast. Not like the whole alice in wonderland/ snow white thing that's been happening where it's trying to be dark, but is just laughable. I'm just imagining how a Beauty and the Beast in the style of pan's labyrinth could have turned out and it's making me want to curl up and cry.
Why are people so afraid of doing live action versions that are actually dark and well done?
Because movies that stay true to the original, non-Disneyfied fairytales tend to be rated R and not PG-13. Plus, it's easier to sell tickets with "Emma Watson and Ron Perlman find romance in this realistic retelling of this favorite Disney film." than "Watch the horrific original version that inspired but looks nothing like Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Witness Lumière set fire to a town while Beast devours the men and rapes the women. Rated R for sexual violence, blood, gore, nudity, and foul language."
