Breath of the Wild is far and away my favourite Zelda. I love the revisions of the formula, the exploration, and the atmosphere. My biggest complaint about the game is the enemies you encounter during your adventure.
I think this is a problem BotW partially inherited from Skyward Sword which it shares a lot of DNA with. Skyward Sword was mostly chus, keese, bokoblins, and more chus.
While BotW had interesting variations to the enemies they included, especially lizalfos which I found quite diverse, BotW lacked some of the classic Zelda foes Ive grown to love.
I think a big omission from BotW were the floormasters. I loved to hate those things. Every dungeon I walked into, I would fear their shadows hovering near me or having them come down from the ceiling. I understand Im in their dungeon and flirting with all of their treasure but the way they grabbed Links ass to show their dominance felt really inappropriate. Those predators would really frustrate me sometimes and I think the Zelda teams decision to ignore them in BotW was irresponsible because they are definitely something every newcomer to the franchise should know about.
Another iconic foe that didnt make the cut were the redeads. Those things were creepy as a kid and they are still super creepy now. The way their disgusting, putrid forms would creep up behind you and let loose their terrible wails were really something else. When theyd finally grab hold of you was an awful feeling. You couldnt fight back for the fear Link was experiencing. You had to just stand there and let them molest you. Honestly, it made me feel like throwing up sometimes but its not like that wouldve helped at all. This is seriously disgusting and in the showers no less:
The worst part is you couldnt just face that one redead and be done with it. Sometimes you would have to face them again and again and it wasnt really your fault, they were still a part of your life. You had to get past them to continue on with Links journey. In Majoras Mask, you even had to befriend those sick freaks which really wasnt anything Link couldve prevented. Poor guy.
And Im disappointed in the community for ignoring them. I know everyone wants to talk about the fun of fighting lynels and playing those minigames found throughout the game world but these foes are an important part of the Zelda experience and to ignore them for any reason is a rather poor reflection on yourself.
