Epic announces Oculus Rift support for Unreal Engine 4

After ps4 and xbone bomb wii u style . i hope a VR console comes along to reinvigorate the. market in the same way wii did.

With regard to the first person discussion, a future (1080p) model of the Oculus could work a general-purpose 3D head mounted display, no? I understand that it would mean sacrificing a lot of vertical FOV, disabling head tracking, and letterboxing down 960x540 per eye for 16:9 content, but would the end result still look decent?

Oculus Rift IS head mounted 3D display with headtracking and better FOV than you can get from any TV.

I absolutely can not wait to own an Oculus Rift.

Me too. It's the only thing right now that truly has me feeling excited. So much so, that if there's no announcement of support for the next gen consoles, then I may have to hold off on those while I save up for the Oculus.

The day this becomes near standard for games, I'm out.

It probably won't, since Oculus is meant as an affordable way to popularize virtual reality rather than the be-all and end-all of how to play video games, but your display of SUPER COOL REBELLION AGAINST NEW THINGS has been noted. Fight the power, friend! Let us all know how much you hate things that you've never even tried!

now when does it come to retail for $200?

IIRC the target retail price for the consumer version is 300-400 USD, and they're aiming for some time in 2014.

It would be pretty cool to see this tech on consoles. Oculus Rift plus Kinect 2 could be a potentially great combination.

Certainly not a huge surprise, but very welcome news. I've been following the Rift long before it was the Rift, and I'm so excited to see stuff like this.

What are the requirements for the rift again? 1080p and 60 fps, or was it higher for each eye or something?

Developer version has a single 1280x800 LCD that's used to show two images that get fisheye warped by Oculus software, and expanded to a regular image with huge FoV for each eye via lenses. Both images need to be running at a locked 60 FPS, meaning the fill rate requirement is a bit less than 1280x800 at 120 FPS.

For the consumer version, they intend to upgrade to a 1080p panel.

I know. By "general purpose," I mean using it to display 3D content that isn't meant to be VR.

Because shooters have become so pervasive that people like you have seemingly forgotten that first-person games can be countless other things. ;)

Frankly i lost interest in FPS gengre but with something like Oculus maybe it will get me back to it.

But yeah my mind orgasm reason for Oculus would be Space games like Star Citizent and racing games.

Cool. I know DICE was considering it for FB3 as well. Getting major engines to support it natively will do wonders for it's adoption.

Not going sake at that price. They should just try to get some one to fund them for long term return.

I find it interesting that the majority of Gaf is so against FPS's

And yet seems so excited about the Rift.

The potential of the Rift is that we can finally create truly captivating first person adventures and worlds that don't require us to be constantly shooting/punching/slashing through them to make them the least bit interesting.

Letter boxing would be a silly solution.

Legacy content can be streamed into a virtual monitor in 3D space. Multiple virtual monitors can be streamed in for legacy content.

At least in theory.

In practice, Windows might not play ball that well.

At $300 this thing will do awesome sales wise. $400 would be a harder sell but it would still do well. I agree that $200 would be a good sweet spot though and attract a considerably larger audience.

Keep in mind this is an enthusiast device. I don't think they expect to be selling this in Wal-Mart during Black Friday for kids everywhere.

Anyone more excited for apps more than for Games? The Virtual Cinema sounds really great. I cant wait to watch my anime, tv-series and movies together with my gf in a virtual cinema on a virtual 400" screen.
I really hope the second Devkit will push the resolution up to 1080p.

To me things like blue marble, virtual cinema or even this kickstarter P&C adventure in a virtual enviroment seems better than some fast-paced shooter or Skyrim.

Good stuff, but no surprises here. Cliffy B is an investor of Oculus. Most popular engine along with the most promising technological advance in gaming = $$$cash money$$$
