Epic consults Pixar on Gears of War: Judgment

That's what I'm kind of worried about. There's really no one who can "teach" interactive storytelling that effectively. It's a book that's still being written. How do you work character motivations into gameplay?
The type of games EPIC make don't use interactive storytelling.

In fact, nearly all major blockbuster titles don't.

So like I said, if they insist on telling stories in games like they're films, at least learn from experienced filmmakers.

Wow. Too often these days am I embarrassed for GAF.

A company tries to take the wants of its fans into consideration and improve themselves as a company by seeking help by some of the best in the business at a 1 day (which is a normal, even above average timeframe) seminar, and we get the ridiculous responses from GaF seen in this thread.

Truly embarrassing.

Not as embarrassing as dialogue in Gears, however.

It's an MS exclusive so the reaction is par for the course quite frankly.

I wonder what would be the reaction to lets say ND going to one of these, as lets not pretend they don't need some help with story and characters as well.

PCF make great games. Bulletstorm had a great fun story that held together extremely well probably the best of that year imo.

Please, don't start in with the console wars nonsense.

For people to know the storytelling is bad they would have to play those games and imo, comparing ND efforts to Epic Efforts is laughable. The companies were aiming for different types of story to tell and wildly different presentations. To try to marry the two is simply projecting your own misguided twist on the situation.

To be fair to Epic, they weren't exactly bragging about the workshop. It was mentioned in passing and I asked what they learned from it during this video interview - http://www.gameinformer.com/b/featu...epic-has-learned-from-its-past-and-pixar.aspx

I don't think people are being snippy about the story itself, but more about the character design and the overall feel of the series that seem to project the idea that you shouldn't take the stories "too" seriously. The interview is good though, he is right about gamers getting caught up and overlooking plot points buried alongside the action.

They need to go to that scriptwriter guy from Adaptation too.

Seriously: Gears 3's story and storytelling are some of the worst I've seen.

So Gears gets mocked for its ham fisted story and then Epic are seen taking steps that would suggest they are trying to improve upon the story for the next game and they get mocked for it.

What?

Gears of War should have a story the way that Doom or Bad Dudes had a story.

What's embarrasing is how terrible the dialogue is in all of Epic's games.

The original Unreal had a better story than Gears and it barely had a story.

This is GAF dude.

Good on them for attempting to try this. Frankly only a handful of games even have passable stories or decent dialogue so I don't know what high standard some of these people are holding Epic too.

Oh so clever!

And I am a huge Unreal fan, but Gears 3 had some decent storytelling. A huge improvment over 1 and 2.

Even if you thought it was terrible, why should we mock Epic for listening to complaints of fans and trying to improve?

If a non gamer were to look at this thread they would wonder why we are idiotically bashing the honest attempt at devs to listen to our needs, when realistically if they didnt put any care into the story, Gears Judgment would still sell like hotcakes.

I don't really see why this is so funny. Unlike a lot of game makers who continue to make terrible story-driven games with no noticeable effort to improve, Epic has made a commitment to tell a better story with each installment and aren't satisfied with the status quo.

I really do wonder if some even want gaming to evolve in the story telling aspect.
My personally cinematic gaming can die and let me play in a simulated world something like skyrim but that is me.

Hahahaha I can picture the Pixar people explaining the concepts of subtetly and body language to tell a story and the Epic people going all "whoaa"
