Epic says it won't ban players for political speech

Quite the opportunists, Epic.

Been playing, look at us gamers, towards every other company the past couple of years.

So Mr. Sweeney, how do you feel about the conditions and what is happening in China?

Tim Sweeny owns 52% of epic, so what he says, goes.

Blizzard is all over the place, no individual still active there can do shit about this.

He owns 52%, but Tencent owns 40%, true.

But it's more complicated than the majority shareholder getting to do whatever he wants.

Shareholders can sue if they believe the business is not being run in the shareholder's best interests. Now this would require Tencent to get approval, go to court, and could be costly. Lucky for Tencent, they have more money than Sweeny, and they are subsidised by the Chinese government.

It's in Sweeny's best interests to do whatever Tencent tells him to do. If they tell him to start censoring certain individuals that are anti-China, he will do it.

Sweeny is putting out the corporate line to keep the public interest high, but the truth of the matter is that despite owning 52% of Epic Games, Sweeny is completely owned by Tencent. He's a wealthy man and will die that way, but he has no bite behind his bark if Tencent decides to put their boot on his neck.

I'd love to see a Support-A-Creator affiliated streamer putting Tim to the test and make a Fortnite Twitch stream while taking huge dumps on the CCP.

Tencent will need to do a derivative action through US courts to push anything, In the current state of affairs between US and China, I wager it would be very difficult for them to win anything if at all. While money matters, both sides are billionaires wealthy enough to afford the best legal teams you could find so there is a limit how far money can goes especially when to win in a derivative suits is by nature extremely challenging. The only practical gesture Tencent could do is dump their Epic shares which Tim or any other investors would gladly buy all of them to enjoy a higher share of the sweet UE4 and Fornite profit. At this point Tim doesn't need Tencent anymore given Epic's current financial status.

You are making this way too complicated. All Tencent needs to do is threaten to withdraw their stake and Timmy will do whatever they went. They own him body and soul as long as he still wants them to fund whatever his company is doing.

China and the US have been on this collision course for some time. Eventually one has to eat the other. Choose your sides wisely.

Yep, if the 1-2% stake was enough to make Blizzard get weak in the knees, 40% would be a death knell.

America is already The French Resistance, in this Epic Battle[net] (Viva, La Francais!).

The real question is: "Who is going to come out on top? Imperial CCP, or Islam?"

We ain't even Tom Cruise's Anthony Edwards.

We Proto-Mad Max's Goose, up in this bitch.

Tencent suing a majority US shareholder in the US court system over a US company for not removing hateful speakers of China off his platform. kek, good fucking luck.

People need to get off the EGS hate machine for one minute and crucify him when he goes against his word, until then he's saying the right things for people who use his platform and telling China to fuck off and that should be applauded.

LOOOOOL sure they do

i mean they are 40% Chinese owned. this is some wishful thinking.

That is still a minority vote.
The man that spoke owns >50% of the votes so it is likely what he says is what will happen.

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
Remember when Tim Sweeney never lied

A few more details.

Actions speak much louder than words, so we’ll see, but he looks pretty genuine about it.

I know Tim is a genuine dude, Heck the guy bought a part of the Red wood forest to keep it protected or something like that.

But with this all kicking off with blizz I find it hard to believe.

Applauded? He's just saying it for some good PR.

It's just free games, guys. No need to swallow PR so gluttonously.

Did Adam Orth and "I believe in Phil Spencer" and Sony :messenger_heart: Indies not teach the gaming community enough of a lesson?

He was asked by a member of the public firstly, he never announced this before that.

Take the blinders off, you’re shitting on a company for doing the right thing. Until he does the wrong thing agree with what he’s saying. I’m sure it will be put to the test quite quickly. He owns EPIC no one else gets a say it’s not publicly listed, there’s no board members only advisors.

Epic's profits rising from overseas players = We're for the people. Do your best government

Epic's profits hit the shitter as foreign governments clamp down = Hey gamers, please respect your local government.

There aren't any blinders here. Epic, like every other big company, looks after their interests first. I do hope he continues to align himself with the people's interests (free speech, etc.), but I don't think his statement should be taken as some great gesture. It's basic human decency and he hasn't done anything except say a few words. If he really wants to do something applaud worthy he should openly support the freedom of HK as their struggle reflects our own values as a free society.
