Escape Dead Island Review Thread

Doesn't look very good...

IGN - 6.8

While Escape Dead Island’s workmanlike combat and ho-hum zombies fail to fully capitalize on this unoriginal but respectably executed premise, it does manage to punctuate its enjoyable filler with some genuinely spectacular moments of madness.

The Jimquisition - 5

It’s just so completely, exhaustingly boring. There’s nothing to it. It plods along, doing very little to ever annoy its audience, but doing precisely diddly-squat to ever entertain it, either. It’s just… there. From beginning to end, Escape Dead Island is a game that’s simply… there.

Rely On Horror - 5

Bottom line: is Escape Dead Island worth its MSRP of $40? No, certainly not. But if it ever goes on sale for $10 or under, I’d say it’s worth checking out if you’re a fan of Dead Island or just zombies in general. If they ever make an Escape Dead Island 2, so long as they can learn from their mistakes and put in the effort to make a fun and unique experience, then you can bet that I’ll be the first to sing its praisesf

Game Informer - 2

While playing through Escape Dead Island, I was continually offended that anyone would be asked to pay for this experience. Any number of developmental issues could have caused this train wreck, from budgetary problems or creative crises, and we'll likely never know the whole truth. But as it stands, Escape Dead Island is worth nobody's time.

Polygon - 2

Frankly, Escape Dead Island doesn't deserve another second of my time, and I hope to all that is holy it doesn't get a single second of yours.

Hardcore Gamer - 1/5

Escape Dead Island squandered whatever opportunity it had to make a compelling story, while offering only sub-par gameplay to tide you over in the meantime. It has no business being a game, rather than a one-shot graphic novel for dedicated fans.

Found enjoyment out of this along with some repetition and frustration. Story wise and the way it ties in new game + was pretty rad. Here is my review. 7 out of 10.http://youtu.be/hz8Axmo_lE0

Dead Island games seem to be announced, forgotten by most, released to mediocre/average reviews, and then forgotten again. It surprises me that they keep making these games, but someone must be buying them.

The saddest thing is that this game had so much potential. Like, I can clearly see where the developers were trying to make a great game, but it ultimately just falls completely flat. I think a sequel with more effort on every front could be a legitimately good game.

The story is garbage, though. Anyone playing it to experience the plot is going to be sorely, sorely disappointed. It even tries to ape The Evil Within and Eternal Darkness at times, only without realizing what made those games' insanity features so interesting.

Well, it is from the people who made Lead and Gold so...

And Krater, AND Hamilton's Great Adventure...I really dig their art direction, even if the games come with quirks or questionable choices.

Got this one ready to go and shall see what the fuss - good or bad - is when I get home.

Myself and Moobabe are the only people in the world who love Krater, so it just might be a Fatshark thing.

should have banged out another Dead Island Ripide clone

the one preview i saw on youtube had a car fly up into the sky like a glitch but i think that was there on purpose, really odd

found it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qehPfL-_zqI

Is this by Techland as well? Have they made anything that has received decent scores? All I know of is that Call of Juarez something something set in modern day.

I keep seeing a trailer for this game looped at my local Gamestop and every single time without fail before the title pops up I think "Why are they still advertising PS2 games?"

Didn't even know this was a thing. Seems like it had a cool concept but failed to execute...
sounds like dead island to me

It has been pretty obvious since the first preview that this was going to be a turkey. The visuals remind me of Dark, and nothing that is reminiscent of Dark can be good.

Wow, I'm kind of shocked by how low of scores this game is getting. My review is now up on EGM (here), and I gave it a 7.5/10. 6.8 from IGN, sure. Even some of the 5's I can understand. But 2s? Really? A 2 to me is a fundamentally broken or worthless game, and that's not at all what I'd call this.

What I would call it is old-school, in a lot of ways. As I said in my review, it feels kind of like the era of 8-bit and 16-bit side-scrollers to me. Controls aren't always perfect, the enemies can be cheap as hell, all of the game's contents aren't just handed over to you on a silver platter. Even so, everything came together in a way that I really enjoyed, and found interesting.

I'm willing to admit that I may be totally crazy in having liked Escape Dead Island as much as I did, but I'd recommend people not write it off as soon as you might currently be tempted to—I mean, so long as you actually played games before the year 2000, and still have appreciation for the older stuff that wasn't always perfectly polished.

To the end!

Call of Juarez Gunslinger is probably their best game. The modern day one 'The Cartel' was supposedly terrible.

I wish Polygon's staff members knew how to write.

They've even got that quote in large text highlighted on the page!

I'm still mildly interested but then again I enjoyed Activision's The Walking Dead.
Will probably get it in a bargain bin at some point.

Is it worth $40?

Is it worth $40?

I wouldn't say so. I made it through the entire game from beginning to end in less than 6 hours and I was taking my sweet time to find as many collectibles as I could (I had about 80% of them total by the time the credits rolled). In a season where so many great games are coming out for just $10-20 more, I wouldn't recommend you buy it. If you're dying to check it out, wait for it to drop below $15. I'd say it'd be worth it then.

Hmm. I think it definitely took me longer than six hours, and I was around the same level of completion as you. I'd say more around 8~9 hours, because I played it for at least an hour on Friday night, a decent amount of hours on Saturday, and then about two or two and a half hours on Sunday to beat it.

Also, keep in mind that the game really encourages you to play through it a second time, as there's various things you just won't be able to get into the first time around.

Is it worth $40?

I always hate that question, because it's a tough one for me. First, because I get the games I review for free, so I have no financial investment in them. Second, because I'm kind of a cheapskate when it comes to buying games on my own, and typically wait until I can get a really good deal on a game before I'll buy it (unless it's something I really want to support).

I mean, I didn't buy Resident Evil 4 for the GameCube until I found it for $10, so yeah, my idea of value is totally screwed up. *heh*
