Etrian Mystery Dungeon |OT| - The Mysterious Adventures of Fight and Heal

I just started this. At the moment it feels like the enemies are either really easy or one-shot my party members.I think I'm missing something.

Yeah we all went through that so dont worry lol

Just you wait till you run into the gold enemies

Wow. Dungeon 1- 'the enemies have grown stronger.' One grasshopper just KO'd three of my team, leaving the protector to run for the exit!

Im assuming sidequests will turn up later- Isn't there usually a bar you can get quests from, all I have is 'beat the boss of dungeon 2' from the provost at the moment, and I think my team needs a bit of training.

Gathering skills- it would have been cool if they counted regarded of who stepped on the tile, rather than having to dig through and remember who has the skill to get an extra item. Seems like something that could have been streamlined a bit.

Still, only an hour in and really enjoying it. The Protector aggro skill works well, and I like being able to switch off other character's skills on an individual basis.

You get used to it quickly, don't worry.

Do my characters in forts get the same amount of EXP no matter the dungeon? Or will they get more if I put them in the fort of the newest dungeon?

Ok, the first boss is down, that was easy enough. I really like the way you get full control in boss battles. Looking forward to doing some solo dungeon runs to get the better blast skills. I've upgraded the guild and have 15 adventurers, four of which are in our first fort.

Looks like there's plenty to get my teeth into in terms of multiple parties too, I love that 'squads' option for preselecting good teams that work well together. I'm going to set up a 'chaser' team with the runemaster fire skills and landsknect 'chase fire' skills next.

Really enjoying this now, the dungeon music is so relaxing, but I find that with most EO games!

I see. Thanks.

Sorry, that was a typo. It does NOT depend on what dungeon they are in. Characters manning a fort in the first dungeon will get the shame shared exp as characters in a fort in a later dungeon. It's a percentage of the exp the team you are controlling earns, so of course fighting in higher level dungeons earns more shared exp, but beyond that it doesn't matter.

Yeah the normal enemies + DOEs will generally put up more of a fight than the actual bosses for whatever reason with the games design lol. Even with that though, still did greatly enjoy the time had spent with the title, even if I have not cleared it yet myself due to all other titles out that have to look at. D:

Haha, yes, we seem to have similar tastes, I always seem to be following your threads about dungeon crawlers anywhere from 6 to 18 months later! :)

Thank god for that right? Lots less stress not having to worry about constantly moving everyone around. Outside of just making sure they are all equipped with the latest and greatest. As the "rental" stuff kinda sucks lol

Trying to mix my part up abit, working with a Gunner, Protector, Runemaster & Sovereign. Really wish I could find a good replacement for the Protector but nothing else comes even close to being a good damage sponge in this.

About to take on the final dungeon at the moment, just clearing up some of the side quests, are the DLC quests worth looking into at all out of interest?

Definitely get the Pooka and Golden Guardian DLC (if still free; if not, at least consider them). They add two repeatable quests to the game to get extra money and White Potions. You will never have enough money in this game, even with the DLC. However, if you're at the end of the 'main' game and don't plan on continuing past that, then you don't need the DLC.

Finished the game yesterday, 7th Dungeon took me about 7 hours to finish :O

I was having a hard time on some of the DOEs in the final dungeon, one of the Gourds was giving me a major hard time because I didn't have a Runemaster with me :/ Got the Boss running really low on Magic, thankfully my Hexer got hurt and was able to use the Painstorm to do massive damage on the boss to knock a fair deal of heath off it.

I was really lucky to beat it to be honest, it managed to take out all of my adventures barring my Protector, it then became a turn by turn battle of just hitting each other, using my blast skill to fully heal when I needed to and only just holding out to win :D

I'm really tempted to do the post credits stuff as there seems to be alot more too the game now I've finished but not sure I have the time for it all at the moment.

So yeah really really solid title, had a blast with it and do look forward to maybe going back one day and playing more. I would love to see a second game, with more classes to mix things up. Atlus and Chunsoft have done really good with this one, its a serious darkhorse for my 3DS Game of the Year.

Just fought my first DOE halfway down through dungeon 4, was happy to see my old friend
Furyhorn
again. My guild has kept the same name for it's Landsknecht, Protector and Medic since EO1, so they were all 'ah, our nemesis, we meet again!'

Glad to hear you enjoyed the game, really do think that the whole colab with Atlus & Chunsoft went a lot better than most expected. Esp the whole having a party to drag around with you.

Could someone explain to me how I can have both my main team and a fort team engaging a DOE?
Do I need to wait for the DOE to reach the level the fort is on, then be there at the same time? Do the fort team just magically appear at that point, as I haven't seen them yet?

What about if a DOE is approaching a fort team on level B1 in a dungeon I'm not in, do I have the option of sending in the main team to help them somehow? Am I alerted to when that battle happens so I can join in with the main team, or should I just go to the B1 fort and wait? I'm just curious to see the NPC team helping me out as it seems like good experience of watching the classes interact!

Hm, I never messed with trying that so I'm not sure. I would always preemptively arrange my fort teams to be able to handle any DOEs on the way on their own while my main party was busy. Or in dungeons where I had incomplete or ungeared teams in forts, I would send in a strong team and manually clear out the DOEs.

Ah, fair enough! It looks like you get enough warning, and I suppose as long as you maintain at least one fort in each dungeon, the town won't get hit even if the fort team gets wiped.

I love having so many adventurers to manage though, and the way reserves get xp- it makes it really easy to try all the classes, and even focus on different skills within a class. I have one hexer specialising in binds, another in debuffing attack/defence, and a runemaster working with each of fire, ice and volt!

To have both parties fight a DOE, you need to have a Fort Party positioned first, and your Main Party needs to be on the same floor as the Fort Party (which means they needs to be on a floor with a Fort built on it). You'll need to time your encounter with the DOE so that they appear while you're on said floor, either by advancing time with the Geomagnetic Pole available on Search Forts and better, or by moving through floors (the latter is a bit more risky, as you'll need to make sure to time it so that you reach the Fort floor at the same time as the DOE).

Now, the DOE won't appear immediately if you're on a Fort floor, as you'll need to go to the room containing the correct set of stairs from which the DOE reaches the floor, and once you do that, as the DOE appears, your Fort Party should do the same. You won't be able to control them however, even with the Burst skill Command All, but they still share the bonus, buffs, heals, etc.

If there is a DOE in a dungeon you're not in, it won't move unless you go explore said dungeon, so you can freely go on with your business in other dungeons if you want.

Wait for the DOE to be a couple of floors before your fort. Then go up and down the stairs between your fort (lets say B1) and the next floor (B2) until the DOE is in B2 with you. Once the DOE is in B2, pass time on the floor until it gets near the stairs up to B1 and then go up to B1 yourself. At this point the DOE will break into B1 using the same stairs you just used and your Fort party will spawn in to join the fight. You still the same level of control over your party but the Fort Party is all AI controlled. So you'll want to make sure you have set up what skills the Fort Party AI can and can't use if you don't want them doing particular things.

8 characters makes killing any DOE incredibly trivial as well so it's the best way to take care of them.

Thank god to that, since can you imagine how stressful it would be otherwise lol. Its one thing I had initially worried about when playing.

Unless they summon in a bunch of monsters which turns everything into a huge mess D:

Also really useful info- i was worried that I might have to keep moving my best teams around, and that multiple DOEs assaulting the city could get very expensive. But it sounds like as long as you set up a fort in each dungeon, and a fort team to complement the exploring team in the same dungeon, everything is fine.

Yeah and having the $$$ to keep them well equipped. As the rental stuff is garbage lol

My one really big gripe with the game, not being able to post screenshots to miiverse >.<

I'd really gotten into that with the last 2 games I was playing, Code Name STEAM and Xenoblade yet for some reason I couldn't post any with this. No idea why Atlus had turned that off.

Rental stuff is garbage but is fine if you're going to 8-man all DOE encounters, though I found the Elemental and higher ratings of Forts to be decent enough to get by in emergencies. Usually your primary team can pick up the slack. And if you're going to 8-man its best to station parties that complement your main party or are composed of classes that don't need the best gear to do their job, like hexers or runemasters.
Also Runemasters spamming Galvanic Rune is just as great as it was in EO4, especially when they're in the Fort team as the Fort team doesn't have to care about TP.

I think I need a basic explanation about what should I do against DOEs.
I'm in the 4th branch, I built a fort in the B2F and then kept exploring - I arrived at the sixth/seventh floor and then faced a DOE, then have been able to defeat it. My question is: what if I just kept going under? I know that forts are supposed to defend the city against DOEs, so... they just would have arrived to it and then attacked the party I put in guard? In a more general way, if I don't want / I'm not able to defeat them with my main party (I am anyway, it is difficult but I can do it) I should just keep going under?

Also... I'm kinda sure that the game told me there's a possibility to create something like a "checkpoint", I mean a way to directly start the dungeon at a certain floor, but I really can't remember it. Any ideas?

Yes.

That depends. If you can't beat them with your main party then your secondary guard parties probably don't stand a chance, in which case it is better to not even put guard in the fort at all because fighting the DOE will be a waste of time. Better to just take the money loss, leave the fort unmanned, let the DOE wreck the fort and go away, and then rebuild the fort. Or come hunt them down with your main party.

Also... I'm kinda sure that the game told me there's a possibility to create something like a "checkpoint", I mean a way to directly start the dungeon at a certain floor, but I really can't remember it. Any ideas?
You can warp directly to forts you build in the dungeons (the most basic fort maybe can't do this? I forget). That's one reason why it's a good idea to build forts every 5 floors or so.

Thanks a lot for the fast and clear answers! I think I understood now, the part about the fort teletrasportation kindla clears how I should explore the dungeon.
Just for your information, I think that the basic forts don't let you teleport - I only built them so far, so that should explain why I didn't realize the warp stuff so far.

The last question, just to be sure I fully understood: suppose there is a fort in B2F and one in B3F - if the DOE arrives to the third and destroy it, the game would just take me back to the city and the only loss would be the money spent in the fort?

Not quite... the DOE will destroy the fort on B3F and the DOE would disappear. Your party can keep exploring. You just lose the fort.

Always leave at least 1 fort near the dungeon entrance in a location that a DOE can't go around it and get out (choke-points around floors 1-3 before they start branching off into multiple rooms per floor with multiple paths). That way if you ever overlook a DOE it will wreck the fort and go away giving you time to rebuild the fort and/or hunt down any DOEs near the surface of that dungeon.

I love the way the party synergies work. Even if not all party builds are viable at the start, I've now got twenty-odd reserves with reasonable kit and plenty of skills, so you have a huge amount of room to experiment without losing xp on your core team.

It's really well done that at the point you encounter DOEs, youve also started to unlock options on your main physical attackers, like the link skills on the Landsknecht that count as a debuff and stick for a while. Also, elemental and area attacks from the gunner and landsknecht too.

At that point, you also have the cash and resources to look at a variety of weapons with specific debuffs, and being able to add any with forging. I'm currently using a brute-force, low TP-usage team of Protector/Landsknect/gunner/medic, with carefully forged gear, and they pretty much auto-debuff everything at this point, while controlling a choke point made a DOE summoning reinforcements laughable when the Gunner uses scattershot and hits them all!

Now that my runemasters and hexers have levelled up in reserve, they are far more effective too.

I've never played a dungeon crawler before, so I'm finding it a bit difficult. I found the first boss once and got destroyed. Is the point of the game to do a bit of exploring, then come back and store your loot, then repeat until you've got enough money/items for some better gear?

If you managed to reach the boss, you shouldn't have too much trouble with it. What's your party configuration? If you lack a Protector, it can be pretty hard this early in the game due to the relative squishiness of your party. If you feel you need better gear, don't hesitate to explore around and gather money/exp for a bit, but generally the game shouldn't be that grindy.

Pretty much, yep. That said, if you have the best gear you can currently buy then your success will come down to party setup, skill use, and levels, in that order. The way I play Etrian games is I always keep 1/3 of my inventory stocked with consumables and then as soon as my bag fills up I'll go back to town, unload, and pick up where I left off (or as close as possible).

Yeah thats the basics of it. Most def you will want to upgrade everyones equipment then just go exploring a bit collecting useful items and whatnots.

Yes. That's basically it, later on you'll be establishing forts to use as extra shortcuts back to town and back again.

For the bosses, try a Protector with provoke, that will allow whichever healing option you are using to focus on them, while the other two pile on the damage. Also, don't be afraid to use consumables in battle, get your head around holding Y to change facing, pointing each party member at the boss, and if they aren't doing much damage, join in with attack/debuff scrolls instead.

I usually try and have a look at each floor in the dungeon fully before trying the boss too, don't be in a rush, it's all about incremental upgrades.

It's one of the things that really hooked me into the series from the first game, the serene exploration tracks and rocking battle music!

Great stuff, really enjoying this, from the moment it was revealed I knew it would gel together. If I could change one thing, it would be a bit more variety in the room layouts, like some cliffside rocky paths that are only two squares wide, or T-shaped rooms etc.

My only complaint with the game is that doing those "solo" subquests (where you need to use one wanderer, or one hexer etc.) can be stressful due to the constant appearance of the DOEs. For the rest (when I'm using a full party), I understood how to fight them and I'm not having any more problems.

The DOEs will stop appearing after you kill a certain amount of them, so if you're really stressed about that you could wipe them out first.

That's a shame. Which parts of the game in particular are not to your liking? The rather clumsy AI of your team? The difficulty curve? The graphics or music?
