Etrian Odyssey / Sekaiju no Meikyuu (Impressions Post #106)

john, can't you read japanese? Why are you waiting for the NA version?
1. I like supporting little guys who bring over Japanese games (like Atlus USA)
2. I like checking out US localizations of Japanese games
3. A friend (Nich) is the project lead on the US version

That said, I've given up. I'll just get both. Gonna try and snag it next time I find it in stock!

Hey, mine is estimated to ship Jan 29, 2007. Awesome.

Hell yes it is. At least for me!

After reading a lot of the posts in this thread and the reviews over at the NintendoDS mk2 site I decided to pick this up tomorrow. Everything I have heard about the game sounds fantastic.

Man Atlus really ****ed this one up big time. What a terrible waste for the company, they finally have a potential sleeper hit and they just can't ship any out.

Anyway B6F is turning out to be a real kick in the balls. Just when I thought I had the first 5 floors mastered, they throw in brand new enemy types that are MUCH harder. I've mapped out most of the floor, but when I finally decided I was strong enough to attempt one of the FOEs, I only managed to beat it with 2 party members surviving. It wasn't worth it so I reseted, and decided to build two of my spare characters. I took my lvl21 swordsman and medic down along with the new ranger and paladin... and after two random encounters a mistake got them ALL wiped out. :lol

Hey John, if you're still looking for Sekaiju, it seems that Play-Asia and Amazon Japan are both listing it as "in stock, available in 24 hours" now, so maybe it's finally been restocked by Atlus?

Hey, thanks -- I'll take a look in the local Bic tomorrow.

Cheers!

It is awesome music but (I'm assuming, based on the number of tracks and filename--haven't downloaded to listen) it's not from the game. It's the preorder bonus disc from the Japanese version, which had 7 unused tracks from the game. They're "prototypes" of the actual game themes Koshiro made, though I'm not quite clear on why he made them--whether they were just early versions of the existing tracks or "warm-up" exercises or what.

I don't think there is much of secret that a few things likely went wrong while this game was in development anymore. Atlus under shipping by quite a large amount regardless of retail pre-orders and of course the biggest indicator is the lead designer/director of the game leaving the company. Those unused tracks could be used in a sequel since I believe the game hints at one, but I still seriously have to wonder if this is all what Kazuya planned in the first place, not that it would be the first time this kinda thing has happened if it isn't.

What makes you think they undershipped regardless of preorders? If you're implying they did it out of spite or something, that's absurd.

You honestly think they couldn't ship more than 35K? Come on now...

How about you understand that what Atlus ships is governed by retailer orders and what Nintendo can supply them with. They don't get 100,000 orders and suddenly decide "Oh we're only going to supply 35k because we hate money".

Awesome, this thread got bumped again! Is anyway actually still playing this? I've been religiously playing an hour or so each day and I finally hit the breakthrough in the second block today. I went from being kinda stuck on B8F to finding my way around all of it, down to B9F and then even finding the exit to B10F. I'm now bracing myself and my party for the big boss fight, but this second block has been MUCH more interesting than the first block. The game has nice surprises while staying very faithful and true to being a no-frills dungeon crawler addiction. :D

Good news: I finally bought the game! Woo! Yeah! etc.

Bad news: I lost it along with 15 (!!) other games when I left my case on the train the other day. :(

Never even popped it in, and it's already gone. :(

I know what you feel.

I left my DS in the train last week. With 3 games - Castlevania PoR, Pokemon Dungeon and 42 all time classics (clubhouse games). Sigh.

That must be devastating, so lose so many games :(

Have you checked the train company's lost and found? I've heard stories of people finding their wallets untouched 3 weeks later in the lost and found.

So you're saying that Nintendo is an evil corp. that screws over smaller 3rd parties and cheats them out of money they were assured?

Wow. I disagree with you, but if what you say is true than I'd never expect Atlus to do another DS game after being burned so badly by Nintendo.

I did, and no luck. Gonna try again tomorrow, though, just in case. I'd like to have faith in humanity over this one, but...I dunno. I doubt it.

No, I think there is a finite number of carts that could be manufactured, and Nintendo just gave priority to Square Enix's DQM after the FFIII travesty last year... or retailers just didn't predict demand correctly. I just highly doubt the "Atlus hates money" claims.

Yeah. How anyone could think Atlus Japan had some sort of grudge against the game, or wanted to see it fail, when they greenlit the sequel before the first game was out... Well, I'd like to see your logic on that one.

I was hinting at this in the newest MC thread but I didn't have the guts to say it straight for for obvious reasons... :(

What does the message duckroll posted say?

A while ago, something was mentioned about connectivity to the next game...

There is a password when you finish the game that plugs into the next one. I think it may even have been mentioned in this very thread. I'll be playing the game again soon... I am just finishing off Layton, then I'll finish off Phoenix Wright 2 and come back to this for a while. It's a long game though, so I'm happy to take my time and play it in bursts.

Well, I knew Niinou had drawn up plans for what he'd like to do in a sequel (and from everything he said, he seemed like the sort of director that liked to get very detailed, so I imagine those plans were fairly comprehensive). And yeah, I knew the password thing was there. But that a sequel had already gotten a greenlight before Seikaiju even shipped, that much was new to me.

Hopefully Atlus keeps the project going even with Niinou gone.

Yeah, I'm mainly going by the password thing, which is no secret (it's in the manual and such). I assume that if it's in there, they're doing a second game.

Okay, I'm all ready to take on the B10F big boss. In my first attempt I was horribly wiped out, but this time I think I'm much more prepared. Just need to buff up my healing spells and increase the defence of my fighters with better armor and stuff. It's looking good, maybe by today I can finally advance into the third area! :D

P.S. The boss is really cool, the music rocks, and Atlus R&D1 kicks ass!

there is a rip of the soundtrack out there

zomg :D

so good

edit: no PMs :P Im not telling

I killed rats.
And now I'm level 3.
I have happy.

Man, I played way too much Sekaiju in the past two days. After beating the B10F boss I was so pumped I decided to clear all my quest log and the new ones, leading to
brand new areas in the previous floors I didn't even know existed
and eventually down to B11F and B12F.

These two new floors showcase brand new ideas in the game design. I really love how the game is paced so each new area is really something fresh. New BGM makes it even better. Anyway eventually I cleared both floors and the boss, which was an AWESOME battle worthy of the Atlus R&D1 label.

Loving this game. Too bad they didn't ship enough. This thread is getting kinda lonely. :(

Hey, I might hit level 5 tonight. And floor 2 like...sometime.

duckroll said:

this is one of the big reasons why R&D1 rox

bosses in R&D1 rpgs arent super charged normal enemies (like in some rpgs). each boss in their games has a gimmick or they bring something new to the game that makes them worthy of the BOSS title.

another thing I really enjoy about their games is how every feels fluid and FAST. menus, battles, the no loading etc... all of that makes their games feel very fast which is awesome.

I guess this can sustain my craving for a good turn-based RPG on the DS from Atlus since they cancelled the SMT DS a while back. Is the game worth importing or should I save myself some money and just wait for the NA release?

The kanji are giving me a mother-loving headache. They're abundant and tiny. And for someone like me who is still learning - it's a struggle.
Hella fun though. Hella fun. I just keep that wiki open while playing.

Completed the map on the first floor last night. All of my main five are on the edge of level 5. Going to attempt to trek into the second floor tonight.
I do like the mapping system, but it feels like they wasted three buttons (X, L and R) on map functions that already have touch screen equivalents. Being able to shuffle through characters in the menu would have been much nicer than just flipping through floor maps. All the classes are awesome, yet daunting. I could easily make two characters of the same class entirely different. I already know I'm going to neglect a lot of other games because of all the things I'm going to do in this game.

I've gotten to B17F...... the plot! It exists! :lol

What you really think I'm going to tell you anything? Get the US version and play 3 weeks yourself to get there! ^_^

Two more months...

I got my characters ready in everything... I even wrote little back stories for them one day since I was so bored. :(

HA! I thought I was the only who made-up character backstories. I had to spend like two hours on character creation to make sure I had everyone's motivations right. :lol

I do it in most western RPGs (though, it's usually the same character).

Wizardry type games are fun because it's more then one character! :)
