Etrian Odyssey / Sekaiju no Meikyuu (Impressions Post #106)

Not even close.

I scraped by at 20 with a Dark Hunter who bound Fenrir's head, disabling Coldfang. So he wasted most of his turns while my guys whacked on him. Also, you only have somewhere around 5-6 turns before the Skolls behind him catch up and join the fray.

Really the best thing for Fenrir is
slink around taking Skolls out before attempting Fenriswulf. Fenrir isn't that hard as long as you have someone who can bind heads and a decent Fire spell. He could be attempted at that level, but it might be better to get to at least lv 15
.

You're too low a level. However
"Physical attacks" (ie: FIGHT command) won't work on it. A special attack (even a "physical" one like Cleaver or Silencer will do good damage). Once I figured that out they were toast at lv 17 or so. (When I redo characters I'll prolly attempt at a lower level, because I wasn't aware that "Fight" sucked.) That's the secret
.
Many thanks :D Gotta try it in a while, I only managed to get the first drop from him and I want the 2nd, the only one I miss from the 1st Stratum.

... You've got to be ****ing kidding me.

It's a bit late I know, but I'm curious to understand (because I don't grasp it yet) how could you give a "1" to replay value when you haven't even finished the game.

Because, due to the game's nature, there's no reason whatsoever to delete your save and start anew. Unless you count building up new characters as "replaying."

And I can see you gave a "NONE" to Story which is even more puzzling since you stated the story in the game doesn't exist. Does the "NONE" counts as a zero?

No, it means there's not enough story to judge. Just because there's not really a story, it doesn't mean it's a bad thing, so I didn't score it.

But apparently there's a bit of story at the end of the game.

Anyways, if anyone else wants to castrate me over my review's innaccuracies and misrepresentations, feel free. But keep in mind that I was only sent a loaner that I had to send back in a set period of time, and that my life outside of playing video games has been rather hectic and stressful for the last few months, so try and cut me a tiny bit of slack :)

But yeah, I'm replaying it atm, so I'll let you know when I can smell the crow.

You don't need to be level 20, level 16 should be good enough if you lure him away from the other skolls.

You can lure Fenrir? I didn't know that.

Also, yeah as Dragona mentioned, clear the Skolls in front of him first, and make sure your Alchemist has Fire or Thunder formulas.

My alchemist at that point was specialized in Ice so.

Pain.

Got this game today and boy is it hard! My sword fighter dude died already on the first area.
Although I don't get one thing about formation, how can my characters do a melee attack from the back row? Isn't there no range restrictions?

I think physical damage from weapons like swords, axes and whips get cut by half in the back row. bows do the same damage from front and back row.

Does anyone here play the Japanese version? Is the quest "あなたの優しい思い出を" bugged where the key item you're supposed to turn in doesn't disappear from your inventory? (In the english version the key item is called "pearl").

The quest takes place in B11F/B12F. (
Fighting a bull monster and a bull FOE
)

BTW, back on stratum 4, I think, I found an event location (and so marked it on my map) revolving around a bright red (I think) stone, perfect for a sling-wielding Survivalist, according to the game's narration. I never did find a quest that utilized that. Anything important there, or is that a red herring?

I did find a similar nest location in that same stratum which did become part of a quest.

Also, I've found a metal ankh thing on stratum 5 that also leads to nothing so far. Also a later quest location?

I have nothing to add other than my love for this game. After spending a month in Nintendo repair hell (they sent me 2 botched DS Lites :lol) I'm finally back in the fold. I've spent way too much time farming and grinding in the first stratum and I'm finally halfway through the second.

Ankhs are part of a quest later. The stone, not so sure about.

*PLOT SPOILER*
Why is there sunlight in a stratum 21 floors deep? For that matter, why are the Ronins from an 'unknown vale' when this is Japan?

argghh!!!

Uh, that's a clear indication that YOU AREN'T supposed to be fighting it yet. Move on. Come back later. FOEs should NEVER represent a 'wall' in this game. If you ever get to a floor with regular enemies that own you (and you shouldn't), then I'd be concerned about proceeding. But every once in a while, they throw in a new kind of FOE that you're definitely supposed to avoid initially.

Hehe, making slow progress and finally reached B4F. Killed a couple of wolves. I'm quite enjoying the game. I don't actually mind the grinding so much in short bursts (I've been playing in fairly short sessions of 30-60 min at a time). My party ranges anywhere from lvl 7 to 16. I've been using my higher level characters on this strata since there might be a big boss fight soon. Haha, I have too many characters (2 per class! I only have 2 slots left, which means either killing off some characters, or one only each of the new classes once I unlock).

Are you supposed to kill all the FOEs in B20 before killing the one in the center? It's getting really tiresome going through 4 floors again and again.

I'm only on B17 despite getting this game just a few days after the NA release, but I think it's because I'm getting kinda bored of it. I'll come back to it later though, I just know it. The 4th stratum is pretty good, although B17 is really frustrating to navigate. Still pretty much the best RPG on the DS for now, although FF3 may be a little bit better.

I'm beginning to think I need to change up my party a bit though... I might level up my landsknecht to 50 since that's what he's close to, and then retire him for a ronin or even a survivalist.

Congrats. You, like me, permanently lost an inventory slot. :)

The thing's driving me crazy. I wish they'd let you get rid of the other obsolete key items too like the keys.

I just finished the game earlier, for a game that I heard that didn't focus at all on story, it was pretty interesting. I didn't expect things unfold the way they did on the last stages.

well i kinda figured that out since killed everyone in one hit. but i don't have anything else to do 'cept for some mindless killin :<

You'll be able to beat B4 FOEs sooner than B3 FOEs. those guys are solely there so you learn how to avoid FOEs based upon patrol patterns.

thanks. though i should've figured that out for myself from the warning that pops up when you hit that floor :lol

If you mean the stalkers on the third floor you have to go around them to continue, the monsters are fine and even the 4th floor foes don't compare to the stalkers. you just have to get by them without getting attacked. They follow you so be careful. You just have to watch how the walk. They aren't too hard to get by. I'd suggest using one of those wards so you don't have to worry as much about a random encounter while dashing 1 room away from a stalker.

I found an Etrian Odyssey music video on Youtube and, as someone who's played the game for 30+ hours, it contains much truth:

Ooh it was posted earlier but not a subbed version!

Ok, I'm on the second floor in the first stratum and getting my ass handed to me. I don't quite understand why as my guys are level 6-7, but it seems like I have to warp back to town every couple of fights to rez and heal.

It's extremely tedious to have to run back through the first floor and then through the second to get where I was, only to have to warp back once I've fought something.

Any tips?

i made it to the event scene. yay!

If I rest my characters, they'll lose 10 levels, but I can rearrange the skill points. If I level back up, will I be able to keep getting skill points per level up to my original level?

No, there's no ultimate loss in Resting, if that's what you're asking. Nor is there a gain in terms of skill points.

(Fifth Stratum spoilers)
Also
Ren and Tlachtga fight was pretty difficult because Ren insta-killed my Protector at the beginning of the fight with Kubiuchi. First time round, anyway. I forgot to save, so the fight data was deleted. When I went for the second round it was a lot smoother.

Also, is it just me or is unlocking new stuff in Shilleka's shop getting more difficult the further into the Labyrinth you venture? I have to sell a ton of stuff to get anything new.

Have patience, the game has a lot of backtracking. If you're not enjoying it now you won't do so later when you have to backtrack twice as much. (I'm talking about the endgame really, since thats where I am right now, and its taking a lot of time to get anywhere.)

A few questions about the game. I basically just started.

Does the FOEs come back after you killed them?

I don't use protectors. Are they good?

What glitches should I avoid?

This is the game that keeps on giving. I've had little time to play anything, but Etrian is the one I keep sneaking moments into.

Current position:

I'm currently about to beat the boss on the ninth floor. It's funny, I had Hauberks long before I started the five day quest. Speaking of which, it wasn't that bad; simply irritating. There was no problems as there's a spring on the eighth floor. Course I was already level thirty by then (having stomped those mammoths that lurked in the secret area of level three).

<3 Etrian

Yeah, I'm not liking it at all. So much in fact, I'm ready to sell it. Too much grinding and tedious backtracking kills it for me. I'm all for a challenging game, but I think they took it a bit too far in this one.

I like drawing out your own maps, though.

Few Q's about the game...

- How exactly hard is it? Is it painfully hard to the point where the fun factor disappears? Would grinding make me OK throughout the game? I'm pretty sure I'm cool with backtracking since my favorite series include Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania.

- Is the game worth the money? I'm very hesitant to buy games that are over 20$ these days. I'm not poor per se, just a cheapskate.

I have to say that levels 8, 9 and 10 were beautifully designed.

You'll be fine.

You might be able to pick it up used. But it's definitely worth the money.

The difficulty is hugely overrated. I've yet to even wipe out once, and I'm practically done with the game.

On B12 now, still doing that mapping mission.
Damn those ants keep appearing until I defeated the Servant
. My Ronin, equipped with Odachi, is particularly awesome despite his low level :D

I recently bought a Wii and a couple of games like Zelda and RE4, and guess what? I still devote my hours to play this game. It's so easy to pick up my DS, turn it on, grind/quest for a few minutes/hours and then save and quit. This is what an RPG should like.

Question about the last floor..

I'm in front of those three doors, with the seals of those wyrms on them. I have a scary suspicion that I'm supposed to defeat those three great wyrms that are scattered across the higher floors.. but they're impossible last I tried! They did 5000dmg to every character in the first turn, thus destroying my party.. are they insanely hard? Or should I just try again..

yes you need to fight the dragons... you have to reduce that 5000 dmg to a more acceptable number so you either need a boosted immunize or those antielement skill on your protector, yup it's pretty lame that's why i stopped playing after the normal end

is having a ronin worth the trouble? Im wondering if I should get one to respectable levels.

It's worth getting one (item spoilers)
just to unlock the ultimate axe for a landsknecht,
even if you don't plan on taking it all the way to level 70. I'm kinda torn personally on R or L for my final party... they're really similar. Although the L seems like it takes way less effort to deal damage. I'm still going to make one just for unlocking that item though.

With what characters did you do it?

All at Level 70 besides Troub which was level 37

My Dragon slayer team consist of Front Row P/L Back Row M/T/S

Primevil: Front row P/L/R Back Row M/S

If you're planning for post game stuff, I think it worth training.

I think it worth it. Just create another Ronin and put enough point for the insta kill (Maybe 5?)

I made a point not to come back to this thread in case of spoilers but I just got to the Fifth Stratum and it blew my ****ing mind.

This is, by far, one of the best experiences I've had in gaming.

Ronin's are the best single-unit killers in the entire game, beating Axe-Landsknechts by a fair amount.

So, yeah, Ronins are worth it.

*5th stratum spoiler*
I'm twenty one floors down, I shouldn't be able to see the sky
