Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 coming out this Summer in NA

Because they are worth it, at least SMT4 and this will be for me.

Honestly, it's because they know their fanbase and that they will pay it.

Yup, even if you're a fair weather fan of the series you can count on it going on sale for $20 a few months after launch on the eShop.

This. It's especially ridiculous that it will still be $50 on the eshop, so even if the extra $10 is justified with physical goodies (which IMO they haven't been since SMT4) digital adopters get screwed for no reason.

Eh? Not really, I don't mind paying that price on eShop. Personally, all these so called "goodies" are useless for me and would just take up space. But I do agree that the retail freebies by Atlus recently hasn't been that stellar since SMTIV.

BTW, any impressions on this one via import or anything? Does it do a better job than the first Untold, or do the dumb Grimoire Stones still ruin things to a moderate degree?

Really glad this game's getting localized! EOU2 is probably my new favourite EO game, so I'll probably pick this up even though I have the JP version already.

I'd gladly pay 50€ and more for every Atlus game if that means that I'd get their games as quickly as you... I don't have a problem to pay more for games from developers that I like. And if you don't, well, we all know that Atlus likes to discount their games relatively quickly, so it just means waiting a couple more months.

You'll probably get it for $20 by the time the European release pops up. :P

Good to see the 3DS's library for 2015 shape out. Seems like 2015 could possibly be better than 2014, where we got like 3-4 big games in the 1st half, then 3 holiday(ish) titles

said it in the box art thread but... what is going on with that logo

You know, I thought for a second that the guy on the boxart is holding the girl's boob to prevent it from falling out of her outfit.

Then I realized that it's actually her shoulder.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!

I loved the first Untold (My first Etrian game) and played it a lot, so excited for this one =D

I've been watching Krimmydoodle stream the JP version of EOU2 on twitch. Looks like a pretty solid game, and the redone music is better than EOU's overall, in my opinion. Looking forward to picking this up as I really like some of EO2's areas. It's also nice that you can access the story-only content in classic mode now.

As for the $50 price point, I'd like to hear from Atlus themselves as to why they're pricing games to be this much. I don't buy that many games in a given year and my favorite franchises are dropping like flies, so I'll pay up. Still, I do wonder what the reason for the $10 increase in price is.

Considering I'm like still on EOIV, I'll wait for a price drop.

A short soundtrack and a small artbook isn't enough to win me over anymore to buy it at launch.

What? I'm well aware that Atlus could very well be cheating fans. But in terms of how many games I buy in a given year and how many Atlus games I buy (I'm skipping the Mystery Dungeon game), an extra $10 for one purchase is not a huge problem for me personally. If they do that for EOV? Then depending on my backlog, I may or may not wait.

I'm well aware I'm endorsing their pricing strategy by buying it on release, but int his one instance I can live with that.

Edit: Oh, haha. Missed your spoiler text. I used to pay the Square Enix "tax" back in the day on DS, too...

Not too surprised here , but a good news nonetheless.

I did not finished the first Untold because I played way too much the first EO and it was pretty similar except maybe the story so I gave up during floor 14ish.
Have not played the 2 and 3 so il be playing this for sure .

Not sure why everyone gets angry over the price. It's a niche title, few people buy it so they have to pay more to offset the cost of localising. And not paying $50 because it's a 3DS game WTH?! You'll pay $60 for some 12hr PS4 game but not $50 for a 50hr RPG?
I guess it's a lose-lose situation for Atlus - try to make a bit of money and gamers rage. Don't bother to localise and gamers rage.

its a good thing i never do that or own a ps4

The logo is such a mess (they just took the 2 from the Japanese logo without changing it to match the style of the English characters while making it too big, and the white outline+drop shadow combo is completely unnecessary; whatever typeface they've been using for their subtitles has always looked gorgeous, though), BUT I'M SO EXCITED.

Curious to see what the cast looks like.

Etrian Odyssey games are worth fifty quid easy and you all know this.
They totally are, and they can last a really long time if you 100% everything, but the price hike's still a little confusing since they've never given an official reason.

I think they've said in the past its due to the size of the cartridge (lots of VO=huge filesize) since the smaller stuff like Conception 2 and Etrian Mystery Dungeon are $40.
That can't be right. From all of the accounts I've heard, Conception II actually has more voice work than this does (the final scene of this game isn't even voiced). Unless they pull an Aksys and add more voice acting than what was in the Japanese version, I don't see that being the reason. I think it's likely they recorded this at Cup of Tea studios like they did with the first game, too, and I'm pretty sure they don't charge nearly as much as PCB Studios does.

I don't even see the text being an issue, unless they completely retranslate everything from scratch, since they not only have the original script as a base, but all versions of the Untold series have actually removed dialogue that was in the original, even in classic mode.

This all just strikes me as weird, but maybe I'm completely off-base. I'm sure the localization is going to be as wonderful as always, but trying to quantify anything in terms of monetary value always makes things weird.

Grimoires are better, for the most part. Grimoires each have one skill and you can hold up to 6(start with 1, then 1 new slot every 10 levels). You can also get grimoires from other classes now via grimoire trading, you trade grimoires with a randomly generated set of adventurers with random grimoires from their class. The new restaurant system thing also lets you get adventurers with higher level grimoires on average.

The main "problem" for me is that when you equip a grimoire of the same ability as your class, it stacks on itself for a max of 10(5+5) or 20(10+10), and boosts the effect. Because of this, it feels like your character isn't "complete" without the necessary level 10 grimoires, which require a decent amount of luck to acquire.

I think there might be more impressions in the EO community thread, though I'm not too sure.

SMT IV and PQ are ~2GB each. Sounds like complete nonsense to me unless somebody who knows better wants to correct me.

Actually, I believe the reason they gave is that it's to give us a faster localization.

That can't be right. From all of the accounts I've heard, Conception II actually has more voice work than this does (the final scene of this game isn't even voiced). Thought it might have read it somewhere but I can't find a source now. Ah well, Atlus gonna Atlus I guess :\
EDIT: Found the quote from NichM on the matter, posted here:
Actually, $50 EO has not happened because the games haven't had extremely extensive voice acting, driving up the cartridge size and attendant manufacturing costs. It has nothing to do with taking advantage of people.
So at least here they're now attributing it to cartridge production costs.

Why can other niche publishers keep releasing their games for $40 but Atlus USA can't? They are not that small.

Why can X company do this and Y company not. It's different companies, budgets, etc, making comparisons can't go very far. Even XSEED with SK2 is doing only a limited physical release for a LE, no standard version coming out. Niche companies can't be put under an umbrella and said they're all alike.

No Europe date ?

NISA Europe have been in charge of publishing these games in Europe so we'll have to pester them for an answer. But I'm sure Mystery Dungeon & Untold 2 are both on the way, we just need to wait for them to announce it.

I feel it's kind of uncertain, since Untold 2 had bad sales in Japan due to its overabundance of DLCs, while Etrian Mystery Dungeon is a spinoff, but I hope NISA will deliver.

What niche publishers usually have in common is their small budget, yet they all manage to sell their games for the standard price while Atlus USA doesn't seem to be able to do that. Instead they give you dodgy reasons like cartridge size (2GB is pretty standard for the kinds of games they're publishing).
Soul Hackers was 2GB in size, why wasn't that one sold for $50? And it had a decent amount of voice acting, including the same five VAs they keep recycling between their games.
It's just kind of strange that this all seems to warrant a 25% price increase across the board.

There aren't really a lot of niche companies putting out retail games for the 3DS, are there?

3rd party support on the 3DS is generally pretty dry. ATLUS is one of the few companies that actively bother with the system.
It would be more understandable if they didn't also charge $50 for the eShop copies but apparently some bullshit law prohibits that. That's what they were claiming at the time SMT IV came out anyway.

I've no problem whatsoever with paying $50 for Atlus games.

Hell, I'd have no problem paying freaking $60 for them, but don't let them hear me.

I vaguely remember reading something about this title having more than the usual amount of save slots (1? Or 3?)? That would be a nice bonus in itself.

Still haven't begun EO:U so this may have to wait, especially with Monster Hunter 4 still being a thing currently.

Yeah they finally listened. PQ had multiple slots as well.

My backlog is way too big to buy a $50 EO game day 1. I don't hate the practice but for me right now, it's probably going to be a no go. I still haven't even bought EO:U yet and it's been like $20-25 for a while.

Although really with GCU it would only be $40 after discount...

I really hope they completely overhauled the Grimoire system from the first Untold game. It was so bad that it was basically useless.

I'll be in it for the Classic Mode, but I'm going to wait to see some more information about it before I take a $50 plunge, especially since it will sit unplayed until 2017 at the rate I'm going XD.
