Eurogame gives Arc Raiders a 2/5 and blames AI voices

Gonna Cry Tobey Maguire GIF

Is this the same outlet that refused to review Hogwarts Legacy?

Eurogamer, Kotaku and Polygon. Everything that is wrong with gaming journalism today.

I'm quite surprised the game is getting such positive reception overall. But that's more a personal thing, since I don't really see the appeal of extraction shooters and games like this.

Is it free to play? Maybe I should just give it a shot.

Thats a poor reason for a score. well that just means they should never be taken seriously for a score.

Cartel level BS.

Regular gamers praise it because they don't rub elbows with voice actors who are displaced by AI voices. They are just enjoying a great game. No agenda or axe to grind.

Oh fuck off

Seriously? Praising the game, but AI voices being the only decision for such low score?

Fucking ridiculous reason

Its an AA studio, its not like they have the budget to pay for each contextual line in the game (there are tons). It's also a multiplayer game not focused on storytelling.

I just can't with those people

Eh, I've seen so many people say they don't care about game journalists or related websites. So, I'm not sure why when news like this comes out people get it in a tizzy. It's their opinion, and that's really it. Is it ridiculous? Totally. But Arc Raiders is doing more than fine, and this nonsense won't negatively affect it. However, giving their article/score attention and clicks is giving them (Eurogamer) exactly what they want.

Any idea what the OpenCritic average was before that review? Its 89 on OC rn, Wayback Machine no help here.
its been sitting in the high 80's, but reviews are just starting to come in it only had like 18 reviews last time I noticed.

I expect people don't like scores like this because its a phenomenal game if you are into that kind of thing, and the reason they gave for a low score is absurd.

It is not free.
These extraction type games are very much like going on dungeon raids and the exhilaration/anxiety of making it out with good loot that builds your character for better runs. Solid game loop mechanics, IMO.
But this is no Tarkov. Tarkov feels like being in an MMORPG, post apocalypse. It's intense, brutal, and nothing like it, really. Think of Tarkov as the PUBG of Battle Royale and then it's easier to see Arc Raiders as a more casual approach to the genre like Fortnite or Warzone. Don't get me wrong, it's still far more involved than those games, but it's deffo a Playschool version of Tarkov, but with mechs and stuff too.

I don't understand the crusade against AI stuff? like if the game is fun and optimized, who the fuck cares? also same lmao same reviewer gave Concord 3/5 lol, gaming "journalism" is a total circlejerk, I don't get why a group of 100-200 people have to tell the world if a game is good or not

Review scores don't matter today but 15 years later when some kid check "best game last decade" to play the kid is going to check these scores so it's bad. (obv not applicable to arc as it's online only but just in general for single player stuff)

Not liking the final results of AI voice work is one thing (though curious since even human voice acting has hit some pretty shoddy lows), it's another to tank a game you seemed to enjoy because...well, let's use their own words:

"Arc Raiders has facilitated millions of similar interactions since launch, but that only makes Embark's use of AI voices more abhorrent. For Arc Raiders to ride the wave of human sociability all the way to the bank, while also being so contemptuous of the thing that makes us social animals in its own workflow – carving up human voices and reassembling them like a digital Victor Frankenstein – demonstrates a lack of artistic integrity that I find impossible to ignore. However smartly designed Arc Raiders is, I cannot recommend it, because Embark does not value the thing that makes it special."

I'm not even sure how it's possible anyone could use them as a trusted source of a review beyond other anti-AI zealots.

They saw the traffic IGN's pathetic review generated and decided to write a hit piece to generate their own traffic. Worthless as their contemporaries.

Thanks for saving me a click. Didn't this outlet also rate Veilguard highly?

Not just highly, Eurogmer gave it a perfect 5/5 and having played Veilguard and Arc, it's not even a question which is more fun. Eurogamer also rated Concord 3/5.

Damn... After learning about the ai voice modifier my interest on the game actually increased.

It seems a really cool thing.

As always, Eurogamer sucks.

Marathon is out?
We all saw official release date and how terribly it did with the audience, the reason for many months of its delay is exactly its terrible performance durning beta, hell it performed so badly sony only gave vague date of launch, not even proper month/day anymore, just to avoid 2nd concord situation which would be total pr diseaster :D

Btw, each month they delay the game means its generating even more cost aka gonna have to make more money to even break even, in gta6 case we know additional 500m usd budget is nothing but even 100-200m usd of additional budget for marathon likely means going from barely breaking even to extreme unprofitability even years after launch :P

Low scores affect MC score

MC score can influence devs bonus and sales

It's an amazing game that's being played by many people, but they deserve every praise they can get. So yeah, it pisses me off.

just a reminder that people somehow still give a shit what reviewers say,
and that people ON THIS FORUM still do those dumb ass "review embargo lifts" threads, as if it's of any interest to anyone with a working brainstem what these idiots from all these disgraced websites have to say about a game...

and those same idiots are the ones giving out game awards. never forget that.

It had an alpha that went down like a lead balloon, most of it Bungies own fault.

I played Arc Raiders at a similar stage of development (around this time last year) and it was in a far worse state.

Marathon is excellent, the recent playtest was great. Not a popular opinion but most folks didn't actually play it.

This is going to be the case for a while, the political climate surrounding AI is a very sharp direct opinion people are either for it or against it, but I do believe eventually people will come around and agree that the current development method of games is also unsustainable and needs a change, so yeah shit on 100s of people hard work to protect couple of voice actors Eurogmer you are fighting the good fight.
