Eurogamer's Best of E3

Yoshi said:
It's only their second new 2D Mario in years. There are only 3+2+2+1=8 2D Mario platformers (not counting the reskin called SMB2, but counting SML1 & 2 although they are not by Nintendo EAD and counting Yoshis Island although Yoshi's the main character there) available although the series started more than 20 years ago. That's not all too much imo.

Why don't we count Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Island DS, the Wario games, and Super Princess Peach along with Yoshi's Island?

We probably shouldnt. People count YI cause of the SMW 2 in front, but it doesnt play like a Mario.

Because I just counted the main line series and added Super Mario Lands, because they are clearly Mario platformers, even if developed by a different team. Yoshis Island DS, the Wario games and Princess Peach also were made by a different team. All of them play very different compared to regular Mario games.

Don't really agree with the list... The milo thing...I don't the character was completely reactionary AI (otherwise it would be revolutionary)...therefore, it seemed pretty uninteresting to me (interacting with a 14 year old boy is not usually high on my list)...Natal does seem interesting...but I can't see it actually providing me with much extra enjoyment...I am actually content with current control schemes, I just want better games

It's not much, I agree, but it doesn't deserve the game of the show either. They're just using the old tested recipe making another 2D platformer that offers nothing new but it's fun for people that still haven't got bored of it or for the new gamers that haven't played it. It's definitely not game of the show material though.
Did you play it and hate it?

More over, can you prove that Eurogamer did not have the most fun with it? Use the vitality sensor as evidence, I guess. If they have low heartbeats, clearly they're lying about their entirely unofficial game of the show award that is clearly important.

those play nothing like mario platformers, plus princess peach and yoshi's island DS are third party made titles.

Then YI shouldnt be included either.

I could understand Natal itself as a choice.
But Milo? How do you vote a mockup (even if it can be done) for best tech? What?

I just don't get it. I think Natal looked genuinely interesting, but what surprised me about Milo was that it was Microsoft embarking on the project, not the technology itself. I didn't see a single thing in the Milo demonstration that couldn't already be accomplished with a PS3 and an Eye Toy, likely even a 360 and it's Vision cam.

You missed my point if you ask that question. I've seen the videos of the game so yeah, I'm very confident that I've played it before (at least this gameplay with these control mechanics). I'm also sure that I've got bored of it after years of playing 2D Mario games. Amateur devs can make custom Mario stages nowadays it's not something too exciting.

Well, that said, I disagree with every single one of their choices. >_<

Best Game: Scribblenauts
Best Publisher: EA
Best Technology: Natal
Best Game Announcement: Super Mario Galaxy 2
Best Video: The Last Guardian
Agreed. Makes me sad, they don't mention Scribblenauts at all. If even Eurogamer doesn't, who else will?

For the record, neither have most of those gushing over it...

I dunno, I saw a lot of people in the impressions thread saying that it was fantastic and really won them over, they seemed much more enthusiastic than the ones who haven't played it.

I'll use their template:

Best Game: Uncharted 2 (I would've put Scribblenauts, but my mind refuses to believe that game would work. IF it somehow, someway does actually work, then its game of the generation.)

Best Publisher: Sony (Too much quality to ignore.)

Best Technology: Vitality Sensor (STFU i'm joking its Natal.)

Best Game Announcement: Its a tie between Agent and Metroid: Other M.

Best Video: The Last Guardian. (Cuz I love the ratcatbird griffonwy. :lol )

Right so we should also listen to fortified_concept a known PS3 fanboy and Wii hater instead of all of the awesome impressions of the people that HAVE played it......Looks at username OokieSpookie.....O wait I guess you were just jumping in to defend your fellow buddy.

FF14 as best game announcement? Over SMG 2 or the new Metroid? No.
SMG is just more of the same and Metroid is pretty much a mystery (and the trailer wasn't so hot) so I'd probably pick FF14 over those. Not that I've any interested whatsoever in it.

Super Mario 64 DS says 'HELLO' in a booming voice that could wake the dead.

I mean for the first time in a 2d Mario game,
'cause it's a 2d Mario game feat. 4p classic action, an old dream for Nintendo (and some gamers)

That's the best you can do? Lame. Btw why are you always appearing when I disagree with Haunted?

Seriously though, I'm too lazy listing games but you all know Sony had a fucking excellent lineup. Some people might disagree about being the "best publisher" (I don't) but Haunted's post just seemed bitter considering how great the lineup is.
Man, here I was trying to meet you halfway by mocking the (excellent) NSMB Wii announcement while voicing my disagreement with Sony being the best publisher and you just throw it in my face. :(

Here's hoping EDGE comes through for 5th Cell.

It's not an exact port but the game resembles a lot the DS one. And most important of all it offers nothing new. It's just a multiplayer of the same game Nintendo is rehashing for years, they're not even offering something new like custom stages or cooperation to finish the stage ala LittleBigPlanet. Seriously Eurogamer? That's the game you picked?

Ummm it does................ But hey you looked at some videos so maybe you know more than people who have played it.

Proves how good of a showing Sony had when even Eurogamer couldn't deny it.

Even though I didn't mind FFXI, I can't say I'm ultra hyped for a successor, but I may give it a shot. Best announcement had some real competition (Like that new Metroid), I'm not sure who I would give the nod to.

Uncharted 2 got flat out robbed for gots/bots award. Sometimes nostalgia is too strong for some people to overcome I guess, because Uncharted's showing melted faces. The quality of it's presentation, demo, and the co-op/mp beta kicking off at the same time, it's not disputable really.

I don't see anything at all wrong with saying Sony was the best publisher

Don't bother with Chumly, a quick look at his post history will make it clear that the guy has some beef with Sony.

I would have picked SMG just because most people really didn't expect it to happen (and really, does SMG2 have to be anything than "more of the same"?).

I don't think the FF14 announcement was anything special, except for the fact that it's coming next year.

Best Game: God of War 3(its doing everything right for me)
Best Publisher: Sony(shitload)
Best Technology: Scribblenauts(Natal, PsEye, Motion+ CANT help you fight zombie Robots in this manner.)
Best Game Announcement: Metroid Other M(suprising on all fronts)
Best Video: Uncharted 2 Trailer(better than Most trailers i've seen this year, including movie trailers)

Best Game: Left 4 Dead 2
Best Publisher: James Cameron's Ubisoft
Best Technology: Left 4 Dead 2 AI Director 2.0
Best Game Announcement: Left 4 Dead 2 announcement
Best Video: Left 4 Dead 2 trailer

Best Game: Scribblenauts
Best Publisher: Nintendo
Best Technology: Natal
Best Game Announcement: Golden Sun DS
Best Video: Beatles Rockband

Best Game: Scribblenauts
Best Publisher: Warner Games
Best Technology: Objectnaut engine
Best Game Announcement: RGC 2 Localized. This would get best everything, but it didn't actually happen.
;_;
Best Video: Everything with Scribblenauts.

Best Game: Heavy Rain (screw you all, I like adventure games)
Best Publisher: Sony (just using One Vision alone sealed it for me, but they also had the games, and announcements like Agent and FFXIV)
Best Technology: James Cameron
Best Game Announcement: Metroid: Other M (Agent and FFXIV runner-ups)
Best Video: Final Fantasy XIV (Metroid: Other M runner-up)

For years we've been begging Nintendo to release more Mario games. One Mario a generation is nowhere near enough. Now they're actually giving us more than one Mario game in a generation and people are complaining? That boggles my mind.

(I still want the new New Super Mario Bros. on DS though, even if it's just single player)

:lol :lol O noes I must have beef with Sony if im not a Sony fanboy!! Makes perfect sense.

Meanwhile Im going to be enjoying my E3 best game (Uncharted 2) later this year and I enjoying games from my E3 best publisher (Sony).

Seriously. I wasn't at E3 so I can't choose my own version of this list (except to say Xseed is publishing the largest quantity of games I will buy for this year), but the SMG2 announcement took my breath away. It was probably the perfect storm of:

- SMG1 being tied for my favorite game
- Platformers being my favorite genre
- Not expecting a new Mario one until next gen
- Liking World the best of 2D Mario games, meaning Yoshi is like an epiphany of greatness
- Gusty Gardens, probably my favorite VG music piece, re-orchestrated and playing in the trailer

I realize that if you're not me, you're mileage may vary (like I was more impressed by the fact Nintendo reached out to Team Ninja than by anything shown in the Metroid trailer), but for me, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is easily my most anticipated game in years (probably since Twilight Princess).

SMG2 more of the same what exactly? In a generation that's so focused on direct sequels (Halo 3, GTA 4, L4D 2, GoW 3, GOW 2, GT 5, MP 3, FF XIV (more of the same FFXI...), DQ IX, Pokemon, Resistance 2, etc etc etc), and you are bashing a game that you have not played.

But yes, 5th cell got robbed, Scribblenauts wins easily best trailer, best gameplay, best concept and best GAF post ever.

The clamour to call Milo a fake when no-one ever claimed he was real - Molyneux himself admitting to "tricks" - proves just how hair-raising, how unsettling Microsoft and Lionhead's achievement is.

What achievement? It's fake. This sentence doesn't make any sense.

When they said New Super Mario Bros. Wii they obviously meant Mass Effect 2. I don't blame Eurogamer, these two games do look a lot alike so it's easy to confuse them.

Best Game: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Seriously ? Take a DS game, put it on Wii with 4 player Co-op and that's game of the show ? Not saying the game is shit, mind you.

But they're favoring the old-schoolest of all old-schools, ergo the most rehashed concept ever, the most uninventive one, over really new and impressive things like say Scribblenauts or on a lower scale Modnation Racing ?

Way to fuck it up. If the sole purpose of your "game of E3" selection is to tell people "yeah, mario 2D is still good no probs" then might as well not select anything. I'm saying that for Mario, but I'd say it also if their game of the show was God Of War 3 or MW2. "You see this game that you all know is going to be awesome because it's the 27th outlet in this big franchise with high quality standard that everyone love ? Well guess what, it was already awesome at E3 ! Woohoo !".

I won't even say that the "Best game of E3" section could be used to put the lights on some under-the-radar title that everyone missed in the big flow of all the expected big blockbusters news, because I'm feeling like a silly utopist only thinking about it.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that everybody who tried it at the show thought it was hilarious fun? Maybe it's because 4-player platformers are fairly new and Nintendo pulled it off with New Mario?

Is it such an odd concept that a website should favour the game they actually liked (and every other site liked) the most?
