Don't forget the infamous elevator scene.
That didn't bother me as much as near the end when
Shinji sits there for EVER with Kaworu in his hand before crushing him. I mean, I understand the hesitancy part of the moment, but it went on WAY too long.

Yeah. I'm kind Eva was one of my first anime series. As a result, the animation doesn't bother me.

Didn't they ran out of money during that episode development? That's mainly why we got treated to that ending. Although I liked it, it was a weird and diferent way to end a series.

It's a good show, finish it. The battles against the angels in some of the later episodes makes it all worth it really. Its the kind of show where you can get all uppity about the endings and whatever else, or just enjoy the bad ass mech sequences later in the show.

People who hate on it I think are really just trying to set themselves apart from others because of its popularity imo. It's really not a bad show at all, esp stacked up to most other anime thats out there. It has its weaknesses sure, but its fucking Gianax, everything they pump out usually is worth sticking out. Hell, Gurren Laggan had its low points, much worse than Eva imo, but is still one of the best shows out there. Then again, I think this goes for all animes. Most of them have a set of episodes that just make me cringe no matter what the show is. Samurai Champloo is probably the only exception..

This. The show falls apart at the end. Though, I'll admit, it was worth sticking to it to see "Komm, susser Tod" in EoE.

After Eva go watch GunBuster, DieBuster and Gurren-Lagann. DieBuster and G-L show what Gainax does best: EPIC super mecha action.
Don't know about G-L but Gunbuster is much better and epic than Diebuster. Diebuster last ep is Gunbuster quality, absolutely top-notch(only if you've watched the original thought), making the show completely worth watching, but the rest... the art, characters and situations suck, compared to Gunbuster; and I blame Eva influence. Still a must watch for the last ep, but the original takes the cake (avoid the old VHS version like the plague though)

Even I won't defend the super long still frame sequences. I imagine someone in the background chanting "Save money, save money, save money" in Japanese when these sections appear.

It is amusing that they employed such techniques and ran super low on their TV budget while making what would become a several billion dollar franchise.

You're off your rocker.

It's good but DON'T FINISH IT!!!!!!!

If I stopped watching at episode 24 and left it at a cliff hanger this would probably be one of top 10 anime.

Of course I didn't and I watched 25 and 26 (CRAP!) and then watched the subsequent 'replacement' movies (ALSO CRAP!) which bombs this way out of my top 10.

Such a disappointing ending <sigh>.

Stick with it. The same thing happened to me. It picks up around when Asuka enters (ep. 8? 9?). Also, the movie is fantastic, so you'll want to finish it to be able to see it.

That was actuall one of my favorite parts. I thought it was really well done. Much better than
showing him in the cockpit just thinking "WHAT SHOULD i DOOOO?!"
.

In light of the rebuild movies that are coming out now, its definitely a good idea to experience the original, if only to gain a greater appreciation for the rebuild.

I thought that scene worked really well actually

but then again, i dont have the pessimistic attitude towards pretty much everything on earth that GAF has :D i loved Evangelion.

It all boils down to this...

How much do you love technical readout porn?

It isn't just Star Trek technobabble. There's plenty of Judeochristian / Gnostic / Kabbalastic mythobabble, and Freudian / Jungian psychobabble as well.

So you get Seas of Dirac, and the Room of Gauf, and destrado being manifest and all sorts of good stuff going on.

the end was the pest part it made u think and
eva01 canabalising the angel scene it was very caveman like
but still gurren lagaan is the ultimate manly mecha anime

I agree with whomever said the show really kicks in when Asuka appears.

Just don't expect to know what the FUCK is going on by the last two episodes.

See that's what I'm really not looking forward to. Someone in here said it was the Lost of anime...

As long as that abstract perspective or imagery or story or whatever is somewhat natural and not abstract or unclear merely for the sake of being abstract or unclear.

That always feels pompous in my mind.

I guess I'll just have to wait to see.

Yes, keep watching. The first half of the series can be a little tedious but it's the 2nd half that gave it it's reputation and status that it has today.

I love the series, it's probably my only definite "#1", but it can be really hard to get into. The story can be confusing, the "hero" is a wimp, and it's an older show and the character designs are a little funky early on in the show. At it's heart it's a show about it's characters.

Also, if you don't like the TV ending watch the movie, The End of Evangelion. It's how the original ending was scripted, but they were unable to do it because of budget and time constraints. Though Anno (the creator) insisted that it was unnecessary and that the TV ending was fine (and still is IMO, though I love the movie too). The only thing different is that it's told in a more "standard" style, sort of.

Maybe if by "Lost" they mean that it's about as confusing as an hour of Jack and Kate eating pudding in a diner and staring at each other.

Nah, not really. (yes, really). Regardless, it's worth the investment. I watched the entire series and knew the last two episodes were going to be insane.

If anything, you can skip the last two episodes and go straight to the first movie.

End of Evangelion is probably the best part of the whole franchise and one of the most impressive Gainax productions; don't believe anyone that tells you otherwise.

As for the “technobabble”, it is pretty much meaningless by the end. It all boils down to very positive and straightforward ideas; Anno was just a little too naive in his delivery.

I didn't like it, but you have to watch it to understand many references.

I loved it and it's one of my favorite series of all time. I didn't come in with any pre-conceived notions or expectations though so that might have helped. Both the final episodes and the movie End of Eva are considered controversial but I loved both endings.

It's a love or hate thing IMO. You really should watch it all to try and make sense of it, otherwise nothing you see early on has any cohesiveness. I dig it, but then again, I bought the set and the movie. PEACE.

I didn't like the beginning of the show either. But the 2nd half was so good that it's one of my favorite shows ever. In retrospect, the first two eps were pretty good though. It's just that it gets too monster of the week'ish following that.

A little bit of monster of the week is okay with 26 episodes.

It gets problematic with say, something as long as Inuyasha.

Yes. I thought the first ~9 episodes or so were garbage the first time I watched it.
A year later I came back to it, rewatched one episode, then finished the series. After completing it (including End of Evangelion), it's one of my favourite series and I appreciated the first few episodes more when I rewatched them (despite that I still find all the characters really annoying). The series keeps getting better the entire way through as it makes more and more sense.

You MUST watch End of Evangelion. It's the real end of the series that replaces/suppliments episodes 25 and 26. They ran out of money when they originally made the final two episodes so the movie was a chance to right that wrong.
