Evangelion takes place this year

Oh wow I recently finished rewatching my Platinum edition of the series and EoE, and just re-watched the first film of the rebuild yesterday. Weird timing.

As far as the last 2 episodes/EoE thing goes I definitely see them as both taking place, with the former just being in Shinji's mind. When I'm watching them I have to watch EoE last, since even though it doesn't end on as happy a note, I can't see how that movie is anything but the definitive "End." If it wasn't the climax, it would overshadow everything afterwards. Sorry, happy ending.

I thought I was ready. I was not.

Didn't watch the series in like 10 years and rewatched most of the series over the holidays. I first watched it when I was a teenager myself, so back then all the teenage angst resonated well with me and I loved it, but nowadays some of that shit is hard to sit through. Shinji is such an ungrateful asshole to the people who like him.
And that Human Instrumentality Project is some of the most nonsensiscal plot I've ever seen.
Still, I'm glad I loved the show back then.

Kinda wish the series would air today for the first time only to see the epic meltdowns over the final 2 episodes entirely taking place inside Shinji's mind and mostly done in stills and sketches, ha ha.

And that final scene its absolutely hilarious, you know the one with the clapping, I have to watch it about 3 times to try and understand what was the point of it. At the end I concluded it was pointless.

The final clapping scene takes place in the US ;-)

Misato, best girl.

Original show + End of Evangelion, is a must watch!

Rebuilds 1 is watch able, stay away from 2 and 3, 4th isn't known yet but from the mess 3rd one was, hopes are equal zero.

Just re watch the classics, The rebuilds are like Star Wars episode 1 and 2, having your beloved child memories assaulted, 3rd still worse than the classics.

So thanks to you all I have finally decided to watch the series and may even offer up my thoughts here later.
One question though, is Evangelion considered an important piece of science-fiction like say Blade Runner or Neuromancer or is it like a sort of joke between anime fans where they treat it with false reverence?

? Can't there be an in-between of the series being pretty good and decently important?

Sure it can. It can just be another Star Trek in terms of quality and both series have apparently had an equal amount of influence on science fiction & anime respectively

My concern was the supposed drop in quality for the last couple of episodes and movies

I believe only the most withered of cynics would consider Evangelion a joke. It's definitely as important as something like Blade Runner whether you want to admit it or not.

Gurren Lagan was GAINAX attempting to apologize for how influential Evangelion was. The series was basically "holy shit guys, that was really a downer, have a FUN show about robots!"

Of course, everyone should just watch Gunbuster :<

Ah. Only the last two episodes have a real problem. In fact I'd say the last half is better than the first.
The movie End of Evangelion is the "proper" finale and one of the high points of the series imo.

Edit: Also yeah, it's very important to many things honestly.

It's very influential and important. Think of it like Star Trek in that it's so well-known (inside the community, obviously not mainstream) that there's no way jokes and spoofs couldn't be made. You might not like it of course, which is fine, but it's definitely no joke.

The human instrumentality is one of the most insane things, how did they come up with that and think its a good idea, how did the writers even come up with it. Lets all live happily ever after as a liquid.

I love that anime's go full bore with these insane ideas.

Can you imagine watching it on cinema, knowing absolutely nothing about what's just about to happen? Today, even if you haven't watched you will nonetheless know at least some of its iconic imagery and scenes. But to watch knowing nothing? I would literally give all my money and half my life to experience that. Asuka being the badassest pilot ever in one of the best fight scenes in cinema, Shinji letting it go on a comatose girl, the live action scene, giant Rei from space!!!, Tang everywhere, total animation break down, i mean holy shit.

What is wrong with his neck lol.
..but in all seriousness, even if he was only in 1 episode I was happy to see Shinji get close to Kaworu, even in a homosexual way. Poor Shinji's been put through so much shit he needs a break.

I also agree that Asuka>Rei in the OG series, I was surprised that I ended up liking Asuka, but man Shinji was made a total wuss, fuck you Anno, kid did not need to go through all that shit.

I quite enjoyed his appearance in the manga. Normally any portrayal will make Kaworu super-nice in order to make it worse for Shinji when he dies, but in the manga he was a self-absorbed dick who got caught off-guard when he observed the caring relationships between the other pilots.

I need to give the manga a read already. Is Shinji any better in the manga than the anime?

I didn't like the manga AT ALL, but he's less sulky and more playful. In short, he's not the Shinji we all know and love very dearly. No one in the manga is, really.

Someone explain to me the logic of
filling the city with hundreds of thousands of civilians when they knew it's going to become a regular battlefield for giant monsters.

Sasuga Gendo.

The city was to be built anyway, they simply took control of that opportunity and designed it to fit their own needs while still making it look like the city was just some very high tech place with nothing weird at all going on underneath it.
They also needed to hide what the giant monsters were actually trying to find.

I like less sulky Shinji, hated how Shinji was tortured in the og anime, I like what they did to him in the first 2 movies though.

So I just started watching this show for the first time ever, and I think I'm in episode 4.

It's definitely interesting, never thought I would think a main character would be so ready to blow his brains out so early into a series.

No, that's Gundam.

I'm pretty sure it's Evangelion as well. Australia was one of the countries that got destroyed in the aftermath of 2nd Impact:

Giant Meteorite Hits Antarctica? (2000.09.13)
According to a P.U. Communications report, a gigantic explosion occurred in Antarctica on this date. The cause has yet to be announced, but experts believe that it was caused my a meteorite impact.
Earthquakes and tidal waves of extreme magnitude are occurring all over the world. We are already receiving reports of damage in parts of South Africa and Australia. The force of the explosion is estimated to be upward of 18 billion megatons of TNT. Antarctica itself has been almost entirely pulverized, and it is estimated that most of the ice will turn into vapor, which will condense into massive rainfall, which will in turn swamp coastal areas as sea level rises. Evacuation orders are in effect for all such regions around the world.

Why did they even need to built the city and not some military fortress instead ? I don't recall any of the Angels having trouble with finding the location of what they were looking for. The city and the civilians
were a complete and senseless waste of money and lives.

Well, they did appear to have very robust evacuation protocols and facilities. But, honestly, i see it primarily as the show's way of compressing the notion of humanity to a single city in which both the extraordinary lives of NERV and the ordinary lives of ordinary folks coexist almost with a social contract of sorts, where citizens are willing to face some degree of danger to otherwise live and flourish in NERV's city. As to the apparent disregard for financial and quality of life issues from the ones in power, well, that speaks to their general lack of interest in safekeeping the lives of those under their care (something which i think is fairly well documented throughout the show).

As with many other similar things in Eva, the metaphorical (and the technobabble) is paramount to the factual when concerning the actual realities of their lives. My personal one is when the Evas fall down, or end up in weird positions, what happens inside the entry plug? Don't the pilots fall from their seats? Injure themselves? Pass out from the insane g-forces a robot that size must generate? But again, the metaphorical stands king.

i read every post itt twice and i'm still confused

should i watch e-van-gil-e-on?
At this point it should be law.

Do it. Do it and enjoy it
;)

It's definitely on that level. But unlike Blade Runner, Eva has yet to be matched in its particular space, I feel.

I consider something like Eva as something a bit different from a typical mecha show like Gundam or Macross though, so I'm not necessarily comparing it to that sort of mecha anime. Likewise I just compare Blade Runner with other cyberpunk films like Tetsuo Iron Man, Matrix or Strange Days. There's no need in comparing it to Star Wars or Star Trek.

Personally I don't know if I could say Eva is my favorite mecha anime but it's definitely up there. Mood-wise it feels like a continuation of Mobile Suit Gundam Victory, maybe my favorite Gundam series. People who think Eva is depressing as-is would probably be on suicide watch if Tomino helped co-write the show.
