Ever locked out from your room or house?

When I still lived with my parents I came home drunk after a night out, took my key out of my pocket, dropped it, and I saw it bounce off somewhere into the grass but I just couldn't find it.

It was about 1AM and there were no lights on in the house, so I started ringing the front doorbell thinking that one of my parents would get up and let me in, but there was no response.

The front door to their house was made out of wood and had one of those semi-circular windows in it made out of 4 segments of glass. I started knocking on the front door thinking that maybe they just couldn't hear the bell, then I tried knocking on one of the glass segments, but after a couple of knocks the glass smashed and my hand went through the door, cutting my hand and wrist quite badly, but I could reach through and open the door from the inside.

It turned out that my parents had also gone out for the evening and weren't actually home. They were not impressed when they came home to find the front door window smashed in and blood all down the door and wall.

I've been locked out of my room/house/car a couple of times throughout my life.

The one I most remember occurred after a heavy night of drinking in college. I went to a party and rolled back to my friends dorm room. After some chilling and more drinking, I walked back across campus to my dorm room (which is about a 15min walk). Surprisingly I don't remember it at all. I do remember "waking up" (aka being conscious) for certain events that happened through the night like taking off my shirt, chugging a bottle of water, and throwing up in the toilet... but then next thing I know is that I "sober up/become conscious" outside of my dorm room and I realize that I'm knocking on my own door to let me in, even though I know my roommate isn't there. I end up walking into the dorm lounge room with just boxers on. I pass out there from 4am till 10am. Luckily, I get my RA to let me into my room before I get any "strikes" from the dorm itself.

I repeatedly check if I have my keys with me. Always pat my pocket multiple times, it's the only way to be sure. This careful behavior has resulted that this has never happened to me before.
I do the same thing and also check for my wallet and phone.

Locked myself out of my apartment building at around 5am a couple years ago. Wasn't really paying attention and grabbed my spare car keys instead of my full set of keys(car/apartment/work). I grabbed a couple tools out of my car and basically pried the door open enough to push the bolt back and let myself back in.

A few years ago I came home pissed as a motherfucker with no keys and ended up having to squeeze through my toilet window which had the dimensions of around 15" x 15" and was 6 foot off the ground. I ended up falling head-first onto the toilet and landing in a crumpled mess on the toilet floor with broken glass all around me. That was the last time I drank whiskey.

Came back from a vacation and my dad had forgotten his key. So he tried to break in the back door. Unfortunately a neighbour saw this and called the cops since my dad just happened to be wearing sunglasses and a hoodie. Police came with their dog and their dog bit my cats leg. We had to put the cat down.

Yup, actually managed to sneak in by manipulating a window handle with a fork (don't ask).

Also broke in to my old house once and had a party with over 100 people. Managed to clean up and bail out before the new owner got home. Got caught because someone had left a drink and a towel in the basement.

It's happened more than a few times. I'm a nerd, so I treat it like a puzzle, more often than not figuring a way to get in.

I've used coathangers, sticks, and other things around the area to unlock doors and windows. I've found some pretty odd ways to make windows accessible, too (stacking random shit, but in a way that doesn't kill me if I fall)

The one time it didn't sucked balls, though. I was at my girlfriend's apartment at the time, it was like 100 degrees, and I couldn't even kick the door in when I tried.
I went outside to smoke a bowl a few weeks ago, out on my porch. Little did I know that our porch doorknob is faulty and the damn thing locked itself when I closed it.

I'm already pretty high by the time I want to come back in and realize this, so I'm naturally freaking out more than I should be. There's absolutely no way to climb down from my porch without killing myself and my windows can't be opened from the outside. It was about 35 degrees outside and i was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

It sucked and I was out there for a few hours before I gave up hope and called a friend to come help me out. It was pretty embarassing.
I'm sorry you had to deal with that and all, but thankfully you're alive and able to tell this hilarious story.

Lucky the neighbor didn't take the law into his/her own hands.

Happened a couple of times when I was still living in my old student house. Two times went and watched a movie and expect someone to be home after that. Once walked to friends who have a spare.

The lock on my room's door is really loose and sometimes turns with the doorknob and locks me out when I'm leaving. I don't have the key to unlock it, but a putty knife jammed into the frame opens it right up!

One night as I was locking up the house, I realised I had forgotten to check the letterbox, so I went outside and closed the door behind me. When I returned to the front door, no mail in hand, I realised I'd habitually locked it as I left the house. Fearing the worst, I circled the property, trying to find an unlocked door -- but, no, it was Fort Knox. Now, I could've just driven to my brother's house about half an hour away to get a spare key, however I'd left the heater on and it was dangerously close to a sofa chair, and I was worried that if I couldn't get inside the house in time, I'd probably burn the bloody thing to the ground.

My first instinct was to ring my other brother, but I didn't have his number in my phone at the time, so I went across the road and got it from his friends. My luck being what it is, he didn't have a spare key. I found myself gradually panicking more and more as I desperately tried to conjure some sort of MacGyveresque plan to break into my own house. Soon, it clicked - the doggy door. I went into the shed, grabbed the longest piece of wood I could find, stuck my arm through the aforementioned doggy door, and eventually managed to push the lock to the opposite position and get inside.

The most interesting element of this situation? The door always has a key in it, but this one night I decided to lock it using the lock itself rather than said key. If I had done otherwise, I would've been completely fucked short of, say, smashing a window.

I've had to squeeze my way though a basement window get into my apartment. I've since had locks installed after realizing how easy it is to break in.

New Year's eve a few years back, maybe 11pm. The locksmith was looooooooooooaded but unfortunately not attractive.
Were you planning on taking advantage of a drunk locksmith?

Talking about breaking in, anyone else unnerved about how easy it is to break into some of these Hotel rooms? I've been locked out of a hotel room many a time. one time, I took a card from a cleaning lady's floater (There were several) and later discovered that it opened every room on the floor, and maybe some on other floors, but i didn't try it. I did the right thing and put it back on her floater the next morning.

After having a couple romps in the suite with a king sized bed and drinking their god damned bottle of 'fancy' tap water that otherwise costs $5, of course

Multiple times, in dorms. Especially at first I wasn't used to such a small place being the whole of it.
Though pulling the door was different from actually being locked out, and just the upper latch could be pushed back with a plastic card.

Was locked in a concert hall once as a kid during the summer when I was practising the piano. They hadn't realized there was someone left (guess I hadn't been practising all that much), so I had to crawl out through some window in the basement. Glorious time of no mobile phones.

There are only two incidences of this that I can recall in my life. One time was at law school. My apartment had a regular lock instead of a deadbolt like I'd been used to at home all my life. For some odd reason I stepped outside briefly and forgot my keys. Had to get the RA to let me back in.

The other, I can't quite remember how it happened, as it seems rather nonsensical now. My house's front door has a deadbolt, as well as an upper bolt that can only be locked from the inside, which we lock at night. The garage doors are locked as well, as is the inner door of the garage. Somehow I found myself outside with both garage doors closed and the front door bolted. I suppose the only way this could have happened is if I had inexplicably closed the one garage door while I was still inside and ran out while it was closing, though I have no idea why I would do that. Thankfully, I still had the garage key which I rarely ever use, so that actually turned out OK, since the inner door lock matches the front door.

i had to break into my apartment with a credit card last week...luckily the deadbolt wasn't locked, otherwise i would have been screwed. also last week i went in through the fire escape window because the deadbolt actually was locked.

Ok so, I haven't been locked out of my house, but I HAVE been locked into my own dorm room before.

It was during my freshman orientation at college. I met a couple of cool people, and we were going to go to a BBQ. Before we left, I thought I should change into shorts, since it was unexpectedly hot. As I'm changing, a gust of wind blows in and shuts my door. When I try to leave, the door was jammed. No amount of turning, twisting, picking, or kicking did anything. I was actually locked in. I was freaking out, and I had to yell through the door for someone to call campo since I didn't have their number. Eventually, they brought a locksmith to pick the lock. Apparently, the lock had somehow become permanently jammed or something, because the guy couldn't do anything. They called the fire department, and the firemen broke the door down. Total time was about an hour. When I came out, there was a crowd of people outside my door. Apparently, the story was that someone suicidal (me) or something had locked himself in the room and wouldn't come out. We all had a good laugh about it afterward, and I met a bunch of cool people from that crowd. I still heard people talking about it up till like a week later at parties, but all in all, it was a hilarious story to tell people, haha.

Nope, but I've been locked inside my room before. The doorknob had been loose for about a week by then and one day I accidentally pulled it out of the door as I was closing it behind me. Luckily my aunt was home at the time and I had my cell phone on me, so I was able to call her to come let me out. Got the doorknob fixed shortly after that.

Yesterday I went out to lunch and forgot my access card on my desk. So I had to eat lunch standing out in the rain waiting for someone else to get back and let me in.

I've done both. Got in through my bedroom window every time. It kinda sucks though because there's this bush with a bunch of spiky thorns right in front of my window.

Locked my keys in my car at the mall on December 26th. I'm sure the tow truck guy was super happy to be navigating to the mall in day after Christmas mega shopping day traffic.

Dorm room once, just because the doors where I lived would automatically close. Happened to everyone a lot.

Not a huge deal, just have to call a place and wait 15 minutes or so for them to unlock it. The first two times are free, if you get locked out a 3rd time it costs you 25 bucks. Some people had huge bills, haha.

At the end of my wife's grad school, I once accidentally locked me and my wife out of our apartment an hour before she needed to be at graduation. Her cap and gown were in the apartment. LUCKILY, our next door neighbor with whom we share a climbable patio wall with (top floor of our building) was home. WOuld have been so screwed otherwise.

I locked myself in my room about a year ago. I have a door that if you lock it, no one can get in or out. The downside is when I unlock it no one can get out still. I didn't know this and I slammed my door shut(and apparently it was set in the lock position). To top things off, no one was home. I climbed out of my window and landed in some mud and crawled back inside attempting to not drag any mud inside. Opened the door, unlocked it, and placed a piece of metal inside the door, so it won't lock.

It happened to me a few times in high school. The first time I had to wait a few hours at my door until my parents showed up. Afterwards, whenever it happened I just would just hop over my fence into my backyard and pry open my sliding door. The last time it happened was a few years ago in my second year of college. I was late for a final and I had also left my wallet in the house so I ended up having to walk to campus. Now I always check my pockets before I close the door.

I forgot my keys once and no one was home, so I had to crawl on my car and jump through one of my driveway windows. After I got in, I saw my neighbor laughing, presumably and me.

Yeah, happened once when I was a kid. Managed to get the lock open with a wire that was in one of the plant pots. And my parents still wouldn't believe me that the lock was shitty; I think they're probably still using the same one even now.

Were you planning on taking advantage of a drunk locksmith?

It was past midnight by the time he showed up and the situation was resolved. You know the saying, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

I really wasn't! No accusations of being the drunken locksmith equivalent of a date rapist. It did fucking cost like 120 bucks though. He really did kind of owe me. Fuck that piece of trash.

I repeatedly check if I have my keys with me. Always pat my pocket multiple times, it's the only way to be sure. This careful behavior has resulted that this has never happened to me before.
Same here. It's almost instinct now for me to tap my pocket or reach in just to make sure I've got the keys before locking any door. Our storm door almost caught me once though. The shitty thumb lock switch managed to wiggle to the other side once when I closed it but thankfully there were other people home.

literally every room/apartment/house I've lived in since moving from my parent's house

I'm the worst

edit: one of those times was a Sunday night. The locksmith lived five minutes away, was at my house for roughly five more minutes. bam, over a hundred dollars. :(

Once. I came home from school but I didn't have the keys with me, and nobody was home. The problem was nobody was free to come back at the moment. Sat in the corridor bored as hell. Had to wait a few hours before someone finally came home to unlock the door.

The only time I can really remember was when I was visiting relatives in America. We had split into two groups, we got back first and my auntie had forgotten the key. So we had to remove some tarp, I then had to climb down through the hatch of the basement into a very dark small cupboard, get out, go up stairs and open the patio door.

I always make sure I have my keys on me, usually attached to my jeans on a chain.

Many times as a child after school. My parents never gave me a key until high school. If someone wasn't there to let me in, tough luck. Wait outside, even in a fucking thunderstorm.

Speaking of which, what would one do if he or she is locked out of a car? Isn't that one a bit harder to crack vs. doors?

Happened once and then I learn that I can use a credit card to open the door.
After that, I installed a bolted lock so credit cards can't open it.

Hmm I wonder how credit card trick works.

When it happened to me I called AAA and they sent some guy with a special tool that got my door open.

Is it possible to buy such tool in a common hardware store or at least a car specialty store?

In college, I woke up one morning in my dorm room and walked down the hall (outside of my room) to use the bathroom. In the entire 2 minutes I was gone, my roommate got up, got dressed, and ran to class, locking the door behind him. Not really wanting to run outside wearing nothing but my underwear, I sat around for a bit until the guy next door came back and I borrowed some clothes so I could go get a copy of the key.

Made it to my exam just in time, luckily.

Made sure to buy some lockpicks later.

Yeah, my family did. Luckily they left the balcony door open so I just climbed up there from the outside and was able to get in (it wasn't that high, just the second floor).
