Ever purchase a game for a system you dont own?

I bought tons of PS2 games without ever owning a PS2. My roommate had one, and pretty much all my friends had them, so I didn't ever see the need. No, I have a pretty hefty collection, no backwards compatible PS3, and no desire to try to find a PS2 on which to play them. Oh well. Rebought a lot of them in the HD collections anyway.

Once, because y'know, PD Zero was going to sell out everywhere . Got the 360 about a month later.

I came in here to post about this game. Only I still don't own an Xbox 360, and I just picked up the Collector's Edition from the GameStop I work at for about $2.50. It came in a shipment "pre-owned" in brand spanking new condition. I figured why the hell not.

Mario Galaxy.

I hadn't been into videogames for a while, the Wii had been out for a year or two I think when I saw a commercial for Galaxy on TV. I immediately went to Google to learn that this game was being hailed as the second coming of Mario 64, did some more research and pulled the trigger on a Wii online. Went out and bought Galaxy in a store immediately, I wanted to play it the second my Wii arrived.

Do this a lot in the first few years of a gen when I don't own every console yet.

Mostly RPG's with low prints that I'm worried will become expensive later.

a lot of Game Gear games I had found at a super-cheap price, they all went on Ebay for more than i'd paid for them

Hmm let's see.

- Bought Valkyria Chronicles, then a slim PS3 one week later.
- Bought used copies of Dragon Quest VII and Persona: Innocent Sin for Playstation. Playable on my PS3.
- Japanese 3DS version of Tales of the Abyss even though I don't have the right 3DS. I'll get to that someday.

I think that's all.

Kind of, but not really. I did purchase a load of games during the Steam autumn sale, in anticipation of building a gaming rig a few weeks later. It was fun to go through each game just to see how badly they ran on the PC I was using at the time. GTAIV was the worst offender, running at 5-10fps at 720p. I've never bought a console game ahead of the console itself, it would only serve to taunt me.

- Suikoden III, a few months before I could buy my PS2.
- Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper (got it for 5 bucks) and Scribblenauts, will get a Wii U soon.

I bought that dead space game for the wii, not owning one. I assumed I'd eventually get a wii but it never happened.

Yup, bought Metroid Prime a solid month before I had a Gamecube. I was broke at the time and couldn't afford it. Ended up renting a cube from Blockbuster to play it.

I bought Shenmue 2 before I owned an Xbox, then I traded it in and kept the DVD. I found it again when I bought a refurb Xbox a few years ago for $2.99 lol.

I'm also planning to buy Vita games when I find a good deal, despite not having a Vita yet.

Resident Evil 4.

Played it with a buddy who had a gamecube, it was really awesome playing this with a friend taking shifts while one of us died or played for a long time. Also made the tense moments way more fun:
"holy fuck, RUN"
"KILL HIM"
"what the fuck happened?" - during a QTE cutscene
" How did you saw that" - when I killed an invisible insect, because I noticed the water moving
" Fuck, I am dead" - everytime

I almost bought Metroid Prime too, but the slow pace wouldn't work like that. Also I wanted to experience that by myself with no one rushing me or whatsoever.

I bought 3 copies of MGS4 and before I even had a PS3. 2 of them were gifts, and one was for myself when I eventually got one. Bought the PS3 when Tekken 6 finally came out. I also remember that I got one copy of DMC4 too before the PS3 purchase.

Magic Knight Rayearth for Saturn, it was the last Saturn game released in North America and it was localized by Working Designs so I figured it wouldn't be around for a long time. I eventually got a used Saturn about 6 years later.

I was going to call this thread crazy, but actually I did buy Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask because of the custom cartridge included yet I did not own an Expansion Pack for my N64 (and never did upgrade it, I'm not sure if I ever even opened the package?)

almost did it this week. target is buy 2 get 1 free this week for WiiU games. i dont own a WiiU yet but I am hoping to get one for Xmas, if not ill be buying one shortly after. If it wasnt for my fiancee telling me i should wait till after Xmas and see what happens I would have done it

I currently own Persona 4 Golden: Solid Gold Edition for Vita. I do not own a Vita.

I also bought Guitar Hero II for 360 before I owned a 360 because it had extra songs and stuff the PS2 version didn't. But my friend had a 360 so I'd play it over there.

Oh, and I bought the MGS4 Limited Edition before I had a PS3.

I bought a Guilty Gear PSP game by accident cause I thought I could play it on the PS3. Whoops. Like, four years later, still haven't played it. Ever.

I preordered the Demon's Souls LE with the intention of borrowing a PS3 to play it. I wound up picking up a slim for cheap right around the time DS finally released, but I did initially order it with no plans to own the platform.

My Steam library consists of...

Linux Games (19)
All games (91)

And I don't have a Windows PC. It's not as bad as it seems, though, as I got the id/Bethesda pack with a ton of crap in it.

MGS2 and GTA III - Grabbed the last copies of both at an EB Games because I knew I was getting a PS2 for Christmas that year.

I preordered and bought Ocarina of Time on the 3DS for the soundtrack cd. I plan on getting a 3DS at some point in the future, but it will probably be years from now.

Other than that... I don't think so.

Picked up xenoblade and last story before I re-purchased a wii.

Also had zelda oot for the 3DS before getting that system. zelda was like a 2 day gap where as the other two games I had 3 full months before getting the wii.

I do that, a lot. Mainly for the reasons the op is mentioning.
I had more than 15 PS3 games before I bought the console. Same for PSP games a few years ago.

I would say that more or less my console/handheld generation cycle is:
- Start buying Nintendo games
- Buy Nintendo console on its second year
- Start buying Sony games
- Buy Sony console on its fourth year
- Stop buying Nintendo games because there are no games
- Play backlog and repeat cycle

Yep and for the very reasons you mentioned OP, if you are sure that you'll get the system and find a good game for it for a fair price then just get it I suppose, likewise if said game is likely to become rare to find, I still regret not getting Metroid Prime Trilogy during its time when I didn't have a Wii, I guess I learned from that experience.
