There are a fair number of cancers that are uncurable but can be put into remission and buy you time to then die of something else much later in life. Hopefully (ugh, not a great way to frame it) Bruce has CLL or Multiple Myeloma which has long survival times and lots of hopeful treatments in the wings.

Also hairy cell leukemia and a lot, but not all, of prostate cancers fall into this group. (Hence the doctor joke about figuring out your probability of having prostate cancer. I think I've mentioned it.)
