SA-X from Metroide Fusion, I loved that part of the game. It was kinda scary as a kid especially the part where it's so close to you and you are so weak. I was always like "Oh fuck, please don't finde me"
Does this count?
Nelo Angelo- Devil May Cry
Vergil and Jeanne are awesome but they have to pay proper respects to their grandad yo.

We meet again, Blunder-Red!
When executed well, I think that rival battles create some of the strongest, most satisfying, and memorable parts of games, particularly action games.
Vergil from DMC3:
Samuel from Metal Gear Rising Revengeance:
Jeanne from Bayonetta:
Vorkken from Wonderful101:
Fiend Ryu from Ninja Gaiden Black:
Azel from God Hand:
Alastor from Viewtiful Joe:
They can be absolutely pivotal in establishing growth of a character, both strength and story-wise. My personal favorite is Vergil from DMC3 because I think he is the paradigm by which all rival battles should structure themselves- in terms of introduction, complementary moveset, story structure, level growth, encounter pacing.

Vize, Anita and Faina from Skies of Arcadia Legends.
Worst videogame trope, I hate them all. Except maybe Wario, because at least something unique came from him afterwards.
Don't think this counts as it's not a double, it's a brainwashed Luigi.
Well Nelo is Virgil
DMC3 was a prequel after all.
