Ex Fan Boys, what game de-fanboyed you?

I used to be a Sega fanboy. But I always had all the consoles up until the PS2 era. When the Dreamcast died way too soon it really shook me and with getting older gaming became much less important.

I always enjoyed and appreciated games on every console but my heart was beating for Sega. It took some time to admit defeat and accept that the Sega I once knew died with the Dreamcast.

I was a diehard Nintendo fan until Wii. Xbox Live and Halo helped pull me away from buying all my games on GameCube, but I had a Wii for about 6 months before I jumped ship and went all in on Xbox 360.

I was a Battlefield fanboy from 1942 and its expansions, through Battlefield Vietnam, and Battlefield 2. As soon as the games moved to consoles the entire franchise went off the rails. The maps got smaller, endless unlocks, horrible single player campaigns. It honestly made me sad when I played Hardline.

Assassin's Creed 3. I loved the series prior. I keep buying the games though so I'm still part of the problem.

I will say that Syndicate helped regain some faith.

I wouldn't ever really call myself a fanboy of anything since SNES in elementary school but Square has completely killed Final Fantasy for me and it used to be my favorite franchise. FFXIII trilogy was just so incredibly bad and the demos of FFXV have also been bad.

So Resident Evil 4 not only did nothing for the Gamecube but actually forced Nintendo players to go to the competition to play the sequel. The irony.

Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect (1) made me buy a 360 when I would have never bought a Microsoft console otherwise.

Very much so. If it wasn't for my love for RE4 I probably wouldn't have jumped on the 360 bandwaggon when I did. I'm sure something would have grabbed me though.

Was I ever a fanboy of final fantasy? I dunno. But I definitely lost a ton of interest in the game after 10. Maybe not a fanboy because I never even tried FFX-2. But 11 + 12 were not my thing and then 13 I have tried beating a couple times and never make it far past landing no the planet.

Skyward Sword really left a bad taste in my mouth with the Zelda series. Too linear, very little surprises, and overall just did not provide the evolution i was hoping the series would undergo. Since then I just don't get too excited for any new entry in the series. I even took more notice to the flaws in the previous games I enjoyed and realized I prefer the Metroid series lol.

Hopefully Zelda U can help change that but with the very little info we have now I'm more on the "wait and see" approach.

Mass Effect 3, I guess? I still appreciate what the other two entries did, but... man, that was the ultimate buzz kill. I never bought merchandise or anything, but I did like the series quite a bit.

MKX for its treatment of its PC base. This may qualify moreso as de-fanboying. I dressed up as all the ninjas for halloween when I was a kid.

The GamePad jolted a lot of Nintendo fanboyism out of me. There's a vestage still there, but NX really needs to convince me they're not dicking about trying to reinvent the wheel for the sake of a USP to differentiate themselves.

Other than that, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow made me realise the series has been woefully lacking in imagination for some time, and it was just the fact I like sprites and the comfortability of the level design that kept me coming back to 2d Igavanias. In 3d, it lost its magic, and that's kinda translated to how I view other entries in the franchise now.

God of War 3. Kratos went from tragic, to badass, to douche-bag. Ascension didn't help things, either.

I was a Call of Duty fanboy, before everything that happened with Infinity Ward and Activision after MW2.

Now I'm a Respawn fanboy.

I always thought Spec Ops de-fanboyed you from CoD

Growing up, getting a job, and realizing that I didn't have to pick and choose, I could have it all if I wanted it.

Because 90% of the sentiment behind fanboyism is having to ration your funds and justify, then rejustify your purchasing choices.

Boom perfect way to put it

Tekken 6.

Oh, who am I kidding! I still love Tekken, it's just that character design took a nosedive from that point (arguably from DR).

I'm surprised there's not more Reach comments, I was a regular in the bungie.net forums back then and they were an absolute mess on the day Reach released, I'd never seen a fanbase implode into a vortex of hate like that before

It's easy to forget Reach's flaws after halo 4.

Not a console fanboy, and I guess FE14 sort of made me not a fanboy. I still like the series and plan on playing the rest of the FE14 games, but I didn't really like Nohr as much I wished. I'll finish the rest but I'm no longer excited to finish the games.

Edit: Mine's more about consoles than specific games, I guess, but I'll leave it. Hopefully it's considered relevant enough to the thread. D:

I was a pretty big Nintendo fangirl growing up. Never bought a Playstation, PS2, Sega anything, etc, said really stupid crap like "BS2" and "X-tra Large Box lolol, stupid Microsoft trying to get into consoles, go back to your stupid OS (I was also raised on Macs at home, so... lol)" etc.

Then Nintendo let Microsoft take Rare away.

Then the Wii came out, with all of its shovelware and "Wii Sports" type things that seemed more like tech demos or party games (useless to me as someone who only plays solo or online and loves stories and grand adventures).

Then I bought a 360.

I've since become very skeptical and cynical with what I expect Nintendo to do/not do, and have become pretty firmly entrenched in Microsoft's ecosystem, though it's pretty likely that I'll end up buying my first ever first-sale Sony console (got PS1 and 2, but as hand-me-downs from others) because it's become pretty clear this gen which console is more tailored to my interests in games, and it's unfortunately-for-me not the One.

Sonic fever pried me away from Fortress Nintendo for a brief tryst in the early 90s.

But it was probably Final Fantasy moving from Nintendo to Sony that forever cemented me as a platform agnostic gamer. After that, I followed the games I liked rather than the platform.

Never been a system fanboy. However, I consider myself a huge Zelda fan, but I'm afraid Zelda U will be the game that de-fanboys me. Ocarina of Time was the only Zelda game I'd call sheer perfection, and every single one after that I felt the magic slip away more and more every time. I have insanely high expectations for Zelda U/NX, but I'm afraid current Nintendo is simply incapable of an unparalleled open world game when we've recently gotten stuff like Witcher 3.

Rock Band 4. I do not believe the budget was there or the time was right for Harmonix to attempt another go at this series. I put a lot of time into that series lol.

I was a bit of a Sony fanboy with the PS1 and PS2. I wouldn't touch anything else. Then the PS3 price announcement happened, and the EU delay.

Plus I think I was just growing out of being a fanboy by that point and I'm now gaming on all devices.

I loved blizzard to death

This is, until wow came out and i realized that warcraft 4 would never exist and that i would need to spend a monthly suscripcion to continue with that. So I tried a demo and i realized the huge amount of time i would need to throw into the toilet grinding shit and doing boring fetch quests. This was vanilla, i never gave a fuck about the rest.
Add to this so many years waiting for starcraft 2 and diablo 3 and i was burned.

Final Fantasy XIII brutally murdered the Final Fantasy fanboy in me. I grew up in love with almost all of the games, but ever since XIII came out it's been difficult for me to be excited about the series.

I also grew up a Halo fanboy and still adore the original trilogy (ODST was cool as well) but that died with Halo: Reach. Not that it was a bad game, but it didn't match up to the first three games in most aspects and I thought that Bungie handing it off to someone else could end up as a bad thing. Which is pretty much happened. Like Reach, I don't think the last two Halos are bad games, but I beat 4 once and was done with it and I lost interest halfway through 5. A far cry from my obsession with Halo: CE, 2 and 3.

edit: I guess this was more about platforms. I've always bounced around so I never got too attached to any of the big 3. I was all Nintendo in the NES and SNES days, then jumped to Playstation and Playstation 2 because I didn't care about the N64, then over to the 360 because the PS3 sucked, and now I'm back with Sony and the PS4.

Microsoft killed Fable. I never played Journey, but it's not like a side game will have a negative impact on a franchise I like, I'll just avoid playing it (as I did). I really wasn't a fan boy though, at least I'm open to criticism towards the series. That's how I'd view fanboyism anyway, blind support.

Maybe when I was three years old and I discovered that other consoles besides the NES exist - I always wanted to own them all even then.

I never thought any hardware "sucked" (and I still don't to this day).

Everything since pong can be fun with the right mindset.

I feel like people have such a superficial appreciation of videogames today when the flip out over things like aliasing. It's safe to say that console fanboyism never really made sense.

Mass Effect 3. Man, I hated the chose of squad members. No Krogan, like really? Instead we got some dude bro looking motherfucker on your team. Like who the fuck is this dude? Also the game in general I didn't enjoy.

dead to me

What de-fanboy'd me?

Maturity and a sizable bank account. When you don't have to make a choice out of financial limitation, you're free to operate objectively because all that matters is what will give you the best experience rather than being compelled to defend or support a platform because it's all you have.

I used to be a fanboy of Epic (Mega)Games since I first played Jazz Jackrabbit (might have been 2) and especially Unreal Tournament, which is my favorite game ever. Thought they can do no wrong.

Then I played Gears of War.

Final Fantasy X- until then, I thought Playstation and Square could do no wrong....

God I effing hated that game to the point I wouldn't even watch friends play it. Felt bad coming off of Tactics and IX, and generally discovering what PS1 RPGs I'd missed. Then the sequels, then the MMO, then 13, just all vomit colored poop water. XV looks incredibly tepid and lame for how long its gestated and FF7R is going to be clown shoes.

I also used to love Valve until they ditched software for hardware and software I don't care for (DOTA and CS), couldn't care less what they do nowadays besides providing me with a constant backup purchase system for great games. Fuck them for never finishing Half Life by the way, it was the best!

-World of Warcraft motherfucking Cataclysm.

I was a huuuuuge WoW fanboy, then Cata hit and I was like.. Wtf??

Idk why, probably having to wait years to get a patch, pace was completely out of hand, redesigned classes and a lot of drastic changes mostly to the old world, which felt new, made a lot of the old "magic" disappear.. I still think about BC/Wotlk days

-Nintendo: Wii -> I was like.. Wtf (again), bought a 360 to play Tales of Vesperia/Star Ocean 4/FF13/Infinite Undiscovery/Resonance of Fate etc etc etc (I could go on).
Basically tought 360 was the real jrpg mvp back then... Should have got a PS3 lol.

Also two years later I bought a Wii and had the best fucking time of my life.

FFXIII killed any good will I had left for Square Enix. Also killed a lot of good will I had left for traditional game reviewers.

I think you can be a fanboy of a console without it being your only system.

I think most of the neogaf guys knew me from IGN is Josh378 on the Sony board(FF7 made me a huge sony fanboy, where reviously i wAs a Sega fanboy for Sonic). I was a huge hardcore fanboy, but now I just don't care anymore because it's just a waste of energy to feel some sort of way about console Wars. So I'm all for loving all consoles if necessary (i own them all).

Probably the time I dusted off my Stean account of 3 games after a year of inactivity, and started to fill it up.

Close to 200 games now. At least the new PC I built can run them all, since my laptop was basically a toaster that ran a lot of indies.

Also indie games. That helped a lot.

I thought games like GTA III thru IV (which sounds like two games but actually represents six games and several years) were this path into adulthood and maturity. But yeah. When playing IV I realized the emptiness of the satire and for me of the gameplay experience compared to what I want out of the game and since then I've felt only more keenly the juvenile nature of the series.

The funny thing is, I think one of the big wigs at Naughty Dog was doing a "Lets Play," of some game with a few other developers, and he mentioned that Jak II and III went grimdark because a focus testing 9 year old said Jak I was "great for his little brother" and that he played games like Grand Theft Auto. So the guys at Naughty Dog made Jak into a grimdark fantasy GTA clone....

Take that as you will.

When upgrading from my PS1, I chose the Xbox over the PS2 for one reason: Halo.

Used to be an enormous Halo fanboy and was very active in those communities for many years.
I'm still interested in the series and have all the games, but I'd say after 4 screwing gameplay up, the MCC being a natural disaster, and 5 being an exercise in thrifty bare-minimum development, the trust is gone and the passion is dead.
5 needed to be a complete home run to win me back but instead it's a very mixed bag which just isn't good enough even if the gameplay is great. I'll be getting H6 used or on sale in the future.

On that note, I used to favor Xbox because of Halo. Metal Gear Solid 4 is what turned me on to Playstation. I had never played the series before and became extremely interested in it after seeing some media from the new game. I got caught up and just fell in love with the series. Got the MGS4/PS3 bundle the day it was released. I loved my ps3 and my experience with that console totally switched me over from an xbox fan to a playstation fan. I continue to favor playstation to this day even though I own both.

My relationship with Nintendo has dwindled over the years unrelated to their competitors. Huge fan in the N64 days, really loved my Gamecube quite a bit too. Wii was neat but I just didn't have as much fun with the games. Nothing from the WiiU's catalog ever interested me that much so we broke up. I've gone from huge fan to "I wonder what kind of bad decision they'll make next." It's like they live in a bubble and keep their fingers in their ears.

Grand Theft Auto on the PS1. Until then I had been a purely Nintendo gamer. One of my schoolfriends got the Playstation Magazine demo disc with the first city of GTA on it, and from that point I needed to own a Playstation.

Final Fantasy VII did that for me. I was a Nintendo-only gamer until then. The FF franchise going to Playstation meant I just had to go get it.

On the other hand, FFXIII kinda made me stop caring about FF. :P

edit: most posts are the opposite of what the OP said, heh.

Getting a job at 15 meaning I could buy whatever I wanted certainly helped. Made it so I wasn't stuck to one platform anymore, so I was free to try other stuff. Hard to decide if it was just that or growing up a little bit.

I mean, I still fanboy a little bit over things like my phone (I'd much rather go with Android since I'm familiar with it, but I did own an iphone before. Never had a windows phone though despite loving my Zune HD), but not to the point where I ever get upset or try to influence other people's purchasing decisions unless they ask me something specific.

Blows my mind that people my age (mid 20s) still fanboy over gaming platforms or videocard manufacturers.

Kojima said that this will be the greatest game that he ever made, so I was hyped as shit since the debut
Then the game comes out and it's not finished
Love is gone
