Ex-Infinity Ward bosses form new Studio, sign to EA

I can only hope their new studio has more of a mature tone than IW did.

Those MW2 videos...man, I have never lost respect for a company faster. And I met Bernie Stolar!

They are trying to lump in contractual rights to the franchise along with recieving bonuses that supposedly are due to them. Basically making that claim helps their case for bonuses.

In the best case scenario for them, they will be co-owners of the brand and recieve royalties. It will not leave Activision. Activision has a far far larger monetary claim that IW did.

well we will see as time goes on... but I would prefer they keep the brand and keep making modern warfare titles.

Well just watched the first 10 mins of the Jason Rubin talk at DICE 04 and he's basically right in what he's saying. Packaged marketable goods are more important than the actual content. Activision would rather own the name Call of Duty than have the talent that created the brand in the first place. Don't understand all of the lol's directed at the guy unless he goes crazy for the rest of his talk.

He has some interesting points, but flushed them down the toilet because his biggest complaint is the fact that he couldn't attend some sort of celebrity party that Tara Reid was invited for.

Watch the BonusRound episode he was on.

that is true to a certain extent...but only in the short term, if you put out 2 or 3 games and they stink then no matter how good the brand was its not going to sell as well, granted it will sell some...but name isn't everything in the long term, much easier to break a brand than build/maintain one.

So EA now have Battlefield, Medal of Honour and Respawns FPS.

Hmm wonder how they will manage that.

How about not make it a military shooter? Didn't they want to do something different anyway?

I dunno I agree with the guy right now. He mentioned the True Crime premier party where the dev got 5 invites the night before. Seems like a fair point to mention. His problem though is he's basically destorying his chance at working with any of the big publishers by mentioning them in his talk.

I guess he bascially said what everyone was thinking but looks like it cost him his future career. I'll watch the bonus round ep to see what he says there.

A space shooter. Yay!

Let's hope they are more creative then that. However MW2 was shit so.. yeaaaaaaaa...

But they did kinda get fired because they wanted to make some other stuff.

Starbreeze was working on a Jason Bourne game until it got cancelled. I wouldn't mind Respawn doing a Bourne game.

I would replace BC2 with BF2 in that statement, but that's just a personal preference.

Jason Rubin acrimoniously leaves Naughty Dog, exits industry for a few years, comes back, starts a startup, complains loudly and frequently that publishers aren't handing him AAA contracts on a silver platter, asserts that anyone who leaves a major studio is going to be screwed long and hard...

... despite literally DOZENS of startups being given big-time funding this generation, run by people vastly less qualified and less talented than him, suggesting that maybe him burning bridges wasn't a great idea, and maybe he needs to play the game a little better if he wants to get ahead.

I'm just curious now...I used to think Jason Rubin left Naughty Dog voluntarily and on good terms, but now you're saying otherwise (referring to "acrimoniously" and "burning bridges"). Did Jason Rubin really leave on a bad note? Could you tell us more?

There are people who think MW2 is pretty crappy but loved CoD4. Me being one of them.

He made an hour long speech at DICE 2004 about how he felt that publishers didn't recognize and promote talent and then left Naughty Dog a few days later.

I think his whole speech is here actually: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1876636950994293221#

He now makes Facebook games while continuing to complain about the state of the industry, often in ways that don't make any sense.

I pray to god it wasn't their idea to add the pot leaves and shit in MW2 and come up with the "FAGS" video.

MW wasn't a piece of shit though. Neither was CoD2. MW2 was a piece of shit.

It's so obvious, mw2 sucked because it was made only for the moneyz, this is like a reboot. Now if they wanna compete against CoD and be recognized by the public they need to make a great game from scratch and this can only be a good thing for us.
CoD4 for me is A LOT better than mw2. :D

Multiplayer is multiplayer. There are only so many ways it can be done. The major addition to that is the leveling up aspects which would have been done anyway just that someone had to do it first.. Story wise the latest CoD games have been insanely short. So is that really a big loss for Activision? You can always find a new story writer, easily someone better.

Sorry I was mistaken. The Multiplayer/Story were by one guy. Infinity Ward also lost their lead Software engineer as well.

Respawn...... epic studio name right there, fits the situation perfectly.
Anywho, now West & Zampella will have developing design completely free of "outsiders" points of view. That's good news to everybody.

If the lawsuit of the Modern Warfare 2 IP favors Respawn, then EA will have a lot of combat shooters in the market: Battlefield Series, Medal Of Honor Series and Modern Warfare Series.

Sounds awesome though I wonder if there's room for another modern day military FPS IP. Here's hoping they knock our socks off with a fresh idea.

Bernie Stolar once road-rage tailgated me. I believe he was simply in a hurry to get somewhere and my five-miles an hour more than the posted speed limit wasn't enough for him. He had no idea who I was but I had just printed an article where he said some arguably inflammatory things about his Japanese bosses, so I was a bit suspicious that he was trying to end me.

Maybe he thought you were Vic Ireland.

no independence, however Vivendi is the majority stock holder in Activision-Blizzard

Sure. If people want to make the argument "I believe Vivendi will use their majority stake of Activision-Blizzard to ensure that Kotick continues to allow Blizzard a large amount of leeway" then that's completely legitimate. I just wanted to clear up the frequent misunderstanding that Blizzard is in some real way independent from Activision when in fact the entirety of Blizzard staff report to Kotick and a change in the stock ownership (or simply of the position of Vivendi on the matter) could potentially lead to very big changes at Blizzard.

If there was anything in their contracts about competing or negotiating with competitors during their employment

then it still doesn't matter because California invalidates non-compete clauses in employment contracts and because this news does not in any way constitute proof that they were negotiating with EA beforehand.

Well it's either going to be a historical shooter, a modern day shooter, a space shooter, or an alternate reality shooter. I don't know how "creative" you expect them to get, but they've already done two of the above settings.

It'll be amazing if everyone gets proven wrong and they don't do an FPS but another genre, and every other dev follows suit once it sells 10mil

please be console RPG =D

I actually think it'd be interesting if they tried something along the lines of a sci-fi take on Full Spectrum Warrior. Although preferably, be a little more action-oriented, but that would definitely be something unique.

It won't happen, but hey, I'm just brain-storming :D

So that's a total 6 Infinity Ward departures, damn. Any word whether the other 4 employees are going to be joining Respawn Entertainment?

Would be a huge blow for the FPS genre if the top dev just up and decided they were going to start making RPGs instead.
