Examples of companies/developers being absolutely direct with their audience

I was thinking about this even before the Thief news that the "PC version wont be a copy of the console version" while at the same time not detailing at all what this even means other than "it's gonna be a good port"

Im wondering about examples where either publishers, developers or companies in general were straight with their audience on what they're telling them, avoiding all the PR mumbo jumbo that's meant to use very broad terms that clarify just about nothing at all..

I mean shit. You have stuff like the Killzone PR guy on Fallon saying the better hardware on the PS4 gives them "more room to better developer those characters you care about". Being treated like an Idiot gets old.

I can only think of Id, or rather Carmack specifically, but that ussually comes from keynotes or personal interviews rather than marketing material or public statements for a game..

CDProject? cant think of many confusing, broad statements from them..

BIS are pretty good doing useful statements, participating in discussions on their own forums and playing with open cards. However they do go a bit too quiet sometimes.

Unfortunately Iwata is a compulsive liar.

CD Projekt discounting the GOG.com shutting off marketing stunt a few years ago it's a perfect example I think.

Yeah, but the rest of the company is still shrouded in mystery. Maybe its nostalgia goggles, dunno, but Bungie seemed a lot better with community outreach and transparency
I agree but that is how it is with most publishers and devs but I think it is great when the brand manager has great comunication with the community. Just_Tank Santa Monica Studio community manager has been great in the GoW threads too.

From Software was pretty direct with managing expectations for the PC port. Or at least they tried but some people didn't believe them.

Planetside 2.

The devs over at SOE are amazing, and have earned my full support after the first two weeks I was in the PS2 beta. I was amazed at the fact that most of the Devs spend a lot of time on the Reddit, offering insight, answering questions, and even gathering information and ideas. The future Lattice-based map system was asked for by the fans and the bases are all being completely reworked, little by little in a direct response to the community's requests. What usually happens is, someone has an actually great idea and it gets a lot of steam on the Reddit. The devs will comment and give the plans to the people whose department is working on it. Soon, those will be added to the game. Some of the bases are being reworked to be more blocked off and 'Base-like', because a Redditor came up with prototype designs and modified them based on community feedback. If people want it in Planetside 2, they get it. Flamethrowers for Max's, Better/different tank controls, Dynamic missions, more weapons/ weapon variety, more vehicle types.

Then there's Friday Night Ops, and Higby's Twitch. Matt Higby does streams showing new content, and Friday Night Ops was started by one of the Dev members who wanted to do more with the community, so she decided to stream herself playing with well-known outfits and doing cool operations with them, while asking questions from the community. She also relays community questions to other members of the dev team in interviews and she also shows off new, upcoming, unfinished content, such as new weapons, maps, vehicles, etc.

These people actively watch the Forums, Reddit, Youtube, etc. They also are completely embracing the idea of changing anything that they've done for a better game.

You know who has not gone on that list for me? And it pisses me off?

Arena net.

Their communication about GW2 has sapped almost all of my good will toward that game, and I am/was a huge fan of it.

fake edit: I love matt chat, that guy is a bit like a loveable nerdy puppy (and interviews some very cool people)

I know that some of the people who work at Xseed are pretty close to their fanbase, and they often shed a lot of light on the process of localization. I think two of them even post here! They're easily one of my favorite localization companies for this.

NISA stands out for me. How many companies actually come out and issue an apology because a game they released was horrible.

I think Nintendo can be painfully honest in their sales reports. It's almost as if they hide the positives and accentuate the negatives. This is the exact opposite of Sony, who will dig for anything positive to highlight. Like after Move released and was clearly bombing I recall something along the lines of "accessory sales are up 14%!"

Investors may call it bad PR on Nintendo's part, but I'd also call it honest and direct to accurately relay how poor sales are.

Do you eat shit?

Haha, I was actually expecting for someone to reply my post with that.

I don't know. "150%" increase instead of hard numbers doesn't seem very direct. They realize there is a problem and acknowledged it but it would be pretty much crazy if they did not. They do tend to stay quiet when things are pretty bad.
