Extra Nintendo Switch dock costs £80 (Eurogamer)

60 literally wouldn't even be possible, lol. Even if it was literally nothing but plastic and the cables weren't included, shipping/retailer cuts/other costs would still likely make that kind of margin profit impossible.

Taking this logic at face value, no piece of consumer electronics could be priced lower than £60.

It's still way cheaper than what Microsoft charges for its Surface Dock and AC Adapter
Yeah, that Surface Dock is really steep.

I think all the Switch pricing is steep, but they probably have sources to say that as much as we bitch and moan we will probably pay up. NES Classic and Amiibo ebay have probably helped them realise they can add an extra £10-20 to everything for the first year or two.

Nintendo is hungry for high profits and lean inventory with all of their products since the Wii U.

People are going to say "but the usb c cable and stuff aren't cheap" but that's bullshit. You can pick up a charger port (with two USB slots!) and USB C cable off Amazon for £14, and that will charge your Switch whilst you play it. Add a HDMI for £5 and you're looking at £20 max for something brought from a retail store. Someone like Nintendo would be able to get the stuff needed for the dock for much much less when buying in bulk. It's price gouging, plain and simple.

I'm not plugging my Switch into some bootleg £14 USB-C charger and cable. There are plenty of dodgy ones out there. Everyone also seems to forget the video switching circuitry in the dock. Yes, it's still a little pricey, but that's the price you pay to make sure you don't burn up your Switch.

People have been plugging in their 800$ phones to charge from computers, generic wall and car chargers for years and it's been fine. Switch will be fine as well. I already used generic USB charger to charge my Switch and it didn't burn up in the process.

USC-C is a slightly different beast though. Bootleg USB chargers have gad time to mature to where they are pretty reliable. USB-C is still an emerging technology, and there have been enough problems reported with cheap chargers that I choose to avoid them. Quality USB-C chargers go for over $30.

Nintendo is embracing the real next-gen
prices
.

Seriously, for a glorified extension cable it's just pure greed. Has anybody done a price breakdown of the Switch hardware and accessories yet? would love to know the markup on some of them.

Wow. Thats considerate of Nintendo.

Considering how cheap (build quality) the actual dock is I think Nintendo are severly overestimating thier product.

with a built in USB-C -> 3x USB-A + HDMI hub (compareable one on amazon, ~$ 30)
that also comes with a USB-C charger (compareable one on Amazon ~$ 20, original Nintendo one $30)
that also comes with a HDMI cable. (... well, ok ... like 2 bucks?)

Is it priced at a premium? maybe.
Is it 'a crappy piece of plastic' ... nope.

Lol.

Thanks for the laugh.

I'm always so conflicted about Nintendo. I love their games, I just hate the fucking company.

Nice Chappelle avatar there.

They've got more front than Woolworths.

It is not a limited run production. This dock is bundled with every switch sold.

This is not how this works. Nintendo pays pennies on the dollar for these things, they don't order from Amazon.

That being said, they are allowed to price as high as they want since the demand is likely high, its how business works. Customers are allowed to complain though, it is only natural.

I'm sure Nintendo buy their components from Amazon sellers, indeed :P

yeah, because that was the point i was trying to get across. Nintendo sourcing their parts from Amazon. Right.

I was just saying that, what you are getting in that package - if you were buying similar components from cheap no-name brands, you'd still be paying upwards of 50 bucks.

Also, i was quoting a person who called it a "cheap piece of plastic", ignoring the electronic components and accessories - which is what you're actually paying for. (because anyone could just print a knockoff dock, of arguably higher quality)

What Nintendo should be doing, really, would be to release a USB-C -> HDMI cable for like 20-30 bucks that allows you to plug in your switch into any ol' TV. No Dock required.

Didn't we already have a thread similar to this but back then most people thought a higher price would be reasonable because the dock has state of the art USB-C? what brought about this change of hearts?

A bit of a fumble here, although Nintendo has been really pricey with all of it's peripherals. Many houses have more than one TV and it would be a great gimmick to be able to move from one TV to another. The price far outweighs the convenience that it provides, and should be around £30 tops.

The dock itself is not £80, just like the dock itself is not $90, it's the dock plus the USB-C AC adapter. The dock itself can be bought for $60, though not sure about the UK price of that.

That said it's still way too pricey. I'd want another one or two for convenience but not at any price close to this.

Apart from making a highly complex process extremely simple and seamless? Nothing. Just a worthless plastic board.

While we're at it, why are routers so expensive when I can just run a $5 cable from my modem to my PC?

Highly complex process? Yeah lol okay. And you can easily get a router for a third of the cost of this piece of shit.

So no product the size of the Switch dock can ever be sold for less than £60? Did you even think about this before posting?

huh?
You think they're making £60 profit on a £80 product?

VAT is 20% of that £80 (£13.33 of the cost therefore goes to taxation) already. So you're agreeing that the shipping costs + materials + retailer cut are ~£7 or less?

You'll have to excuse me if I don't believe that adds up for even a second.

It is a cheap piece of plastic, how hard is that to understand?
£80 for this!?

Fuck you, Nintendo! You fucking thieves!

They're Anker products. Far from bootleg, and it works flawlessly.

It's not just this. It's also an AC adapter and an HDMI cable. Don't get me wrong, the pricing is terrible, but it's to be expected. The AC adapter alone is 25 (?) in the UK, Nintendo is probably counting on sth. like 15 for the HDMI cable, which leaves "only" 40 for the dock itself. Look at what other companies charge for similar stuff (see the surface dock for instance which is like 150).

The HDMI cable is definitely not $15. It is sold at half of that price in my country's retail stores. Nintendo could've got it much cheaper.

That's not what he's claiming at all...

He's saying that £60 in profit for the manufacturer (which is what the poster he's responding to is claiming) on a £80 product is literally impossible due to shipping, taxes, retail cuts and other costs.

I'm not buying one for another TV. If I need one in future I'll wait for the homebrew scene to build a workaround.

The price is a joke for what you get, especially considering the quality of the build (the Switch itself is great). This is also why I almost never buy official peripherals like chargers and USB leads, etc...

Joycons = £80
Dock = £80

That means of the £280 asking price of the Switch, the actual console/ tablet is only £120.

What a bargain.
It doesn't work like that just in case you're not joking. :p

They slap on extra to peripherals because they can.

Div nae talk shite, man!

For 1 penny less you can buy an Amazon Fire TV box.

For that you get;

  • the box - which has 2gb memory, 8 core processor, a gpu, wifi, 4K hdmi out
  • The Power supply
  • HDMI cable
  • Remote control with voice control

I think the Switch is some kind of experiment to see how consumer-unfriendly Nintendo can make a system without it hurting the bottom line

Another reason why it's best Nintendo never ever get to no. 1. Love my switch, disgusted at the price of everything that goes with it.

They could charge half that and it'd still be overpriced. Ridiculous.

It does almost seem that way, doesn't it. Between the outrageous accessory pricing, the relative lack of games to this point, and the barebones system software/services...

I'm sure a lot of that will improve before too long, but damn.

I wouldn't trust a no-brand with USB-C stuff though, especially with power being involved.

Your point is valid, but I'm comparing to actual brands, like Anker, Apple, DELL, and so-on. Even if those don't make things perfect, you can get some sense of feedback and restitution if something goes wrong. Don't think Nintendo's stuff pricing has to be compared to cheap knock-offs.
