EyePet for PlayStation Eye

Is this a downloadable game, or a full disc game?

I would assume its a download, but they might be smart to also package this game with the Playstation Eye, though they can treat that as a free download with purchase as well.

If the PS3 was at a Wii pricepoint, this could be the big Christmas thing. If only Sony knew what they had!

If it were a Retail game, i could see what you're saying.

But do we have any proof downloads sway significant amounts of people?

Either way, i'm very interested to see how this develops.

Download only? Seems like a silly thing to do.

Didn't they learn anything from: Tamagochi, Nintendogs, Pokemon, or Tickle Me Elmo?

If kids see this shit, they will piss their pants like crazy.

None of those games need a camera peripheral. Anyway, I'm sure it will be both retail and download.

Agreed. Some shelf space and marketing could make this huge...but as you said, PS3 is not yet at insta-buy price point.

Speevy, I know you've resorted to a mostly sarcastic internet character, but I'm gonna reply seriously anyway.

Why on earth wouldn't Sony bundle this with an Eyetoy? That doesn't really matter in the first place, kids will shit their pants no matter what you have to buy to play it. Unfortunately in the end it's the parents that will look at the ps3 price tag.

I can't agree there. The peripherals matter. No one's going to buy a PS3 for this thing, don't be silly. But kids who have a PS3 already will see this rather unappealing Playstation Eye peripheral and stay away.

I know Microsoft and Sony are thinking they're somehow expanding their market to include casuals/families, but it hasn't worked yet. And it won't this generation either.

They're going to sell this like Eye of Judgment at retail. Also, they'll include a PSN version. So you have options. And I wasn't being sarcastic.

If they did sell it seperate, then they should make it a budget PS Eye bundle or something. For $30 you get the camera, this game, and like a notepad/marker with a guide of pre-done toys you could draw for him or something like that.

they put EyeCreat on Blu-ray disc with Japanese PSeye bundle , so it's not out of question here , that not the thing , marketing is .

with LBP and this they should do bundles now , also PS3 with PSeye in the box .

Yeah, Sony, did you hear that? We don't want your casual games!!! Make it so that you play with a pet in home, then you'll sell to the only demographic that counts (the hardcore demographic).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that video seems to be in a much higher resolution than the Eye can even do? It looks like HD widescreen (~720p) but I thought the eye could only do 640x480 which is 4:3.

If that's true I wonder how they'll handle the non-widescreen to widescreen discrepency??

So it's probably basically the equivalent of a CG trailer, aka a proof of concept. Whether or not they'll be able to achieve this level of graphics/interactivity remains to be seen. In fact it definitely is otherwise it'd almost be finished and not "late 2009".

I don't see it. The fact that hardcores are delighted over this doesn't really give this much chance to crossover.

It will be considered a nice tech toy though, like the Aibo or the Segway.

I've seen Eyetoy footage zoomed to widescreen on a HDTV before. It did not look pretty.

It's super exciting tech. I'm very sceptical that it won't leave me feeling cold and disappointed that, as with Eye of Judgement, when I look down in the real world, there's nothing there.

Sounds silly, but augmented reality just seems to leave me feeling displeased with real reality.

If they make lots of objectives to achieve with the EyePet it could be really fun despite this.

I don't care what Sony does. I just said it doesn't work.

This is for 2009, so we'll see. At least under $300, hopefully.

The PS3 with a holiday price of €299 + this game at retail packaged with the PS eye for €60 or less could be amazing for Sony if handled correctly. Just show that trailer as an tv commercial (it's perfect). Add a little Little Big Planet and you have your holiday season offensive.

that was pretty cool.

imagine if it wasnt a monkey but a GI Joe or something. it could be like that movie small soldiers. :X

if they can somehow create a $299 system bundle with this and the eye toy, they may be able to make a killing. Of course they're not going to do this, and I am really curious how well the pet will look/animate in the actual game.

Regardless, if they don't put this a the right price point and with a bundle they'll squander what could have been a virtual reality firby.

(Imagine downloadable boosters that contain different creatures with different behaviors... or a creature creator game that can import personal creations... PROFIT.)

This SHOULD be the wiisports of the PS3, but sony will fail and make it niche, watch.

But then you wouldn't want to pet it!

Or would you?

Actually thinking about it I might want to pet a female GI Joe.

Ugh, the creature looks awful. It's like they took the Monkey from the Lost in Space movie and went "OH YEAH THAT'S AWESOME! Needs more fur... JOB DONE!".

Icky :(

(When I say awful I mean I don't think it's cute, quite the opposite in fact, artistically there's not much wrong with it if at all.)

I was thinking it's a concept because of the drawing toys thing. I've seen the tech demo, making 3d objects out of 2d drawing didn't seem impossible, but letting your pet to complete the drawing? now that's some out there stuff that's very questionable imo

Having the pet repeat the drawing is not the difficult part, neither is the creation of a 3D object based on it. The only thing that puzzles me a bit is the part when the guy takes control of the small 3D car with a pad. How is the console supposed to guess how the 3D object is supposed to work ? That's the questionable part, IMO...

If they can pull this off properly, it could be pretty interesting. Finally, my ikea table is a gaming accessory!

I just hope they let you have something else other than a monkey. It's cute, but I'm just not a monkey person =P

It seems to me that without some level of tactile input that the whole experience would be just a bit weird. People loved Nintendogs because you could kinda pet the thing and the screen gave some resistance. It didn't feel like petting a dog, but there was some real physical interaction there. The finger wiggle in the air seems kind of odd to me.

It looks neat though, but the price of the PS3 and the Eye in combination with each other will make this almost a complete non-factor in gaming.

it do with the 2D objects
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/11/14/video-of-new-research-conducted-with-playstation-eye/

so it may do 2D first then translate it to 3D , that should be easy ..no ?

Video looks seriously mindboggling. The tech is wicked.

However, is this just another 'interactive' style PSEye game, or will there be objectives, game modes etc? I can't see any objectives in the video other than drawing/creating objects and interacting with the monkey dude.

Also, I'd like to see LBP incorporate this tech. Drawing stuff and having it imported in to LBP like that could be seriously cool.

I think the biggest problem is still the PSEye - it's quite un-mainstream since it takes a while to set up and configure for the best optimal lighting.

Plus, it doesn't come with every PS3.

I think the drawing stuff is more of Sony's typical smoke and mirrors routine. How is the game supposed to recognize the physics and controls for an object you draw on a paper? Either you can only draw certain objects that have been predetermined, or they're faking that feature. Also, there's no way that pet would know how to finish your drawing unless you're close to a predetermined object as well.

I don't know... It's very likely I'll play this 2-3 times and then never bother again.

Worked for Wii Fit

This is actual innovation...like Little Big Planet level of innovation.

hate justified :)

Before this whole EyePet thng wasn't Sony already working on the tech that allowed players to draw on paper and input them into the game world via the camera? Im sure the video oversimplifies the process but it may be similar to LBP or maybe Magic Pengel. You draw, you import, then you assign properties one object at a time.

well it's late 2009 title , I don't think interactive screensaver games like Aqua Vita and Tori Imaki will take this long , so i guess it will be more than that .

and if they want to did it right they should do some of what Dogz/Nintendogs/Tamagotchi did , like Contests , Mini games , Store for Shopping ..ect .

I just had a hilarious image in my mind of this combined with Robot Chicken.

So is this the petz game to get excited about?

Pretty neat concept trailer I must say. I wonder if they can realize all that they are planning.

The pet-design has to go though.

Yeah I was wondering...does any other Eye game go from non-widescreen to widescreen? The lighting and resolution in this demo video are too good to be true so I'm wondering what it will actually look like.

EyeGirl. Hopefully PS4, when the tech can jump over the uncanny valley.

All you'd need then is five pints, and the uncanny valley will be defeated.

Pimpbaa said:
No it doesn't. Most people in this thread like it. And the general public would love it too.
I showed the trailer to my little sister and she freaked out. She thought it was "The cutest thing I've ever seen". Keep that pet desgin, people will love it.

But the next thing she asked was if there was going to be more pets.
