Fable Legends is free-to-play

Super excited now, love the Moba/lol style f2p model.

I think this might save the game from being a bit of a flop, especially with cross play.

I think this was a genius move.

Cool ! I guess that solves the question of cross buy between PC and Xbox :D

The specific character rotation model is the best they could have come up with for this game I think (especially as people still seem to vomit at the idea of paying premium to play a multiplayer only game, as shown by Evolve or Titanfall, though I personally have no problem with that).

But now please send me a damn beta key ;_; the game looks so gorgeous...

I wasn't all that interested in the game before, but I'll at least give it a try now. What's the worst thing that can happen, that I waste a little bit of time playing something I discover I don't like? Oh no.

Getting it and I will be willing to spend $40 in purchases. I like how they are adding customization to any hero. So I will find the one I like then make him/her look like how I want them to. Great feature, I hope this game is populated. I hope I also get into the beta. .

Very smart move for a game of this type. Probably wouldn't have done that well at retail. I know I wouldn't have paid full price for it. Now I will definitely try it out and I can see myself paying to fully unlock characters and what not if it's a good game.

Very happy with this decision. If I enjoy the game I may buy a few characters or additional items, but being set up like a moba price style is a great move. I hope more multiplayer only games do this.

I had no problem with Evolves model personally, but I think it should have been a F2P game with this exact pay model that Fable is doing.

If this had local co op I'd be really interested. I wish games hadn't given up on that option, evolve is another one that needs it added in.

I'll try it but at this point it feels this game will be DoA

DoA if they actually charged for the game. F2P changes things. Numbers should be good, but retention and sustainability will be the main questions. The fact that it's a graphically impressive UE4 AAA game for free is pretty damn cool. Hopefully the presentation feels high quality. That would help a lot to battle against the F2P stigma.

Yikes, Lionhead are sticking their fingers in their ears as well:

No. You’ll be able to earn everything that affects gameplay.

This is not a good answer, or at least, it doesn't provide enough information.

The answer should be:
No. Things that affect gameplay can ONLY be earned via the in-game currency.

Obviously the developers need to make money, and it's probably a hard sell to convince Microsoft to take the "risk" of only selling cosmetic items, and NOT selling gameplay items, but I really feel like in the long run it would be the much wiser choice.

Hey Randomjob,

Just to clarify on this point, any item that has any gameplay impact can also be earned by just playing the game. This is super important for us, as we don't want an unfair advantage in the game for those who can pay.

Cheers,
Hohbes
Looking at the other answers by Lionhead staff in that thread, it seems that this will be another example of F2P style many people hate, not the cosmetic-only, DOTA style F2P.
I believe it will be allowed to buy gameplay elements (not just heroes) with cash.

Great news! An online co-op game is most fun with friends and it can be pretty hard to convince a group of friends to pay up for something like this.

Ah so not only is it free to play, its also pay to win!

Lionhead Admin:
So it's worth noting that when it comes to match making, we'll be taking your equipment and skill level into account. So as you earn new and more powerful equipment, you'll be facing more challenging Villains and creatures when you play. You won't therefore be able to buy some amazing equipment, then go and trounce somenewbie Villains - you'll be facing a Villain of an equivalent equipment/skill level.

Lionhead Admin:

How does that make it pay to win? They're making sure you won't be matched against people with advanced gear and skill.

EDIT: Also it seems the gear in lockboxes (micro transaction stuff) won't be the same gear that's in treasure chests from actual gameplay.

This will be a very tough sell with all the MOBAS out there. Also aren't hero rotations usually weekly? Apparently with this game they are like every 3 weeks. If that's true that would be the worst .

That isn't pay to win. That is pay to play against people with the same level of stuff you just paid for.

Yes, you will certainly be able to buy gameplay altering items, which is a bit of a disappointment, although matchmaking will(obviously) take these items into account when creating matches.

Well they won't exactly be competing with a ton of MOBAs on XB1 at least. Also, they said you'll be able to buy a character with credits earned from gameplay after about a fortnight of regular play and that the character rotation would go along with that time table. So yeah, 2-3 weeks sounds right.

Weekly rotations are usually for games with 30+ characters. KI's rotation for example is monthly. The less amount of characters to rotate, the longer the rotation usually.

This makes me wonder if Evolve should have tried this route? The 4 v 1 experience sounds pretty good for this model. KI and DOA5 work well this way as well.

Could have been:

-FTP Goliath and the 4 base hunters.

-3-4 additional monsters rotate in or you can buy them forever

-3-4 additional hunters in each role (medic, support, trapper, assault) rotate in or buy them forever

-Long grinding would allow you to purchase certain characters permanently (ala LoL)

-Additional skins are all paid DLC

I'd love to see Evolve get a F2P conversion.

Smart move by MS I think, this could be what saves the game as it looked like a total flop since it's first showing. Not many would pay full price for what it was offering, including me, with this I may take a splash.

It's incredibly fun and the 4vs1 element really breaks down the pvp barrier that some people have. My wife loves Evolve but has consistently hated pvp in all other action games. I'm hoping for Fable Legends to provide the same.

It is incredibly fun, and I love both the Alpha and Beta, but I wasn't ready to drop $60 on it. Was waiting for the price drop, but I would have played it FTP and bought a few monsters/characters at launch...

It's a HUGE risk for companies/publishers because you need a massive audience and a small percent of that audience spends the money to recoup the costs.

Yeah, looks like something I could dig into, but I don't want to drop $60 on it.

Wasn't it reccently said that it wouldn't be a free upgrade for OEM licenses?

No. If you have Win7/8/8.1 on your box and it isn't a business license, then you can upgrade for free.

Was hoping this was the case. KI turned out amazing, so I won't hold the F2P aspect against it.

Yup, I think they struck gold with the KI model. It helped that the game was amazing and had an amazing tutorial. I'm not much of a fighting game guy but the dojo mode with Jago literally led to me buying season 1 and 2 and it became my most played launch game.

Ki is also repeatedly at the top of the most downloaded list on the Xbox store.

It's a great business model... And I think it will work even better here because once they swap out the characters you can use you'll lose out on that experience so people will be forced to buy if they want to continuing levelling up. Hopefully the game turns out good though, I've been on the fence with what they've shown and I'm still confused by it.

Is it a loot based game?

What's the source on that? I followed the update info pretty closely, and this is the first I've heard about an arbitrary OEM limit. It doesn't even seem to make sense, because that would mean most pre-fab computers wouldn't have a valid update path, and they made clear that those machines would be getting the update.

I'm very, very skeptical but, as you said for free I'll give it a try (why not). It'd be awesome if it turns out awesome and one of the better Fable games. If they do it right, I'd even be willing to spend money on it (as someone who loved the original trilogy)

Have you had much exposure to MOBA style games? As much as the lore may be a draw, I feel like that would be a smarter point for your expectations. I'm unfortunately right in the middle with it, so I don't know what to expect, but like you said, giving it a shot.

I'm fine with the idea of it being F2P. If the matchmaking works like they say, matching people with equipment level against equal opposition, then no problem with being able to buy gear packs or chest keys or whatever they plan. The only issue with that is getting paired as a hero with someone who bought the gear and has no clue how to play.
