Facebook Introduces Its Steam Competitor, Gameroom

Who is this for? No way are you leveraging your casual base by asking them to install and run a client.

I believe I read somewhere that if you take casual games into account like farmville and candy crush and sodoku and all bejeweled, and flash type knockoff games, the vast majority of gamers are like most peoples moms playing games in the office.

Still a lot of Facebook gamers, casually playing with little interest or knowledge of what might exist outside of that on PC. For those people this will likely be pretty good.

Origin and Uplay look like gold compared to this and Windows Store.

Let's not forget GoG as well. Wouldn't be surprised if Take 2 or Activison threw their hats into the Store arena considering Blizzard has Battlenet and Bethesda just launched Bethsoft platform.

Dead in the water within 6 months, but if they are able to go after the casual gaming demographic, then I could see it being of some use.

Unlikely for many of these. Having a store of their own is nothing new for most companies as far as retail editions go, so digital isn't out of the realm of possibility either, but actually being "competition" away from steam is not looking like a possibility.

The only current Take 2 company to have a separate store is RCSC and even that stays on Steam. My2k exists in all their Steam games though, and is quite unintrusive at this point. Activision doesn't have anything despite holding Blizzard's Battlenet - which has resisted being anything beyond Blizzard's digital distribution platform and has always been the sole point of sale for digital. Bethnet doesn't sell games yet, and considering the rather gargantuan business they do on Steam, it seems clear they are not going to disrupt that beyond allowing multiplatform mods. Selling their games as an option sure will work, but not as a sole point of sale.

i wouldn't really consider this a "competitor"... more like rip off/inspired by

i mean, i don't play browser games or whatever this stuff is called. but it makes since to put it in one place...?

so the premise of this is that, years after having had their lunch eaten by mobile gaming, facebook wants mobile developers to port their games back to facebook?
I think this is really what's going on.

Mobile games are popular in large part because they're mobile though. I'd be surprised if this made any sort of dent in that market.

Dear Facebook,

You are not a gaming company. Stop trying to be one.

Sincerely,

Everyone
To be fair, I had fun playing Avengers Alliance on FB back then. I just don't think it'll ever return to its glory. At least it hasn't convinced me it will with how Rift store is going right now.

Even in Japan GREE hasn't been doing as hot once the big publishers self published their games on iOS/Android. It used to dominate TGS at its peak.

I didn't mention that on purpose, because I think it actually is a viable Steam competitor. Or at least that it has a unique selling point.

And that unique selling point is the primary reason I will choose GOG over Steam if given the choice. This Facebook system is completely DOA to me as it offers nothing I can't already get from Steam (cheap, huge library) or GOG (digital ownership of my games).

So yea updated my games beta I'd been playing Family guy Quest for stuff on and it's Gameroom. Yea this is not even remotely on steams level. Valve has nothing to worry about.

People parroting "more competition is always good" are naive.

This will only lead to a more fractured marketplace with dumb exclusives. Not to better prices, support or a better user experience.

What exactly did the competition from Uplay, Origin or Windows store do for the customer?

I like how everyone is joking now.

...just you wait. You won't be laughing when facebooz takes over gaming with a league of mobile games that make $$$$. Money talks, people. Investors know this.

Facebook has brand recognition and has so many users. Steam should be scared shitless. VALVE, your days are numbered. You can no longer bank on steam to be your cashcow.

Get ready, valve. You will be making games for GAMEROOM now.

You just watch. VALVE = FINISHED.

seems like more of a gamecenter right now but over time i could see it become a true steam competitor.. especially if it has widespread adoption amongst gamers on facebook.
