Facing possible jail time for, what I feel - doing nothing wrong...

Was the guy who quit his first day because he didn't have a surge protector this year? It's going to be a close one.

Wait.. I don't know if I've read that one.

Unless it's the same guy who quit his job after 2 hours because he was bored and then felt like he'd fucked up.

It's that one. He didn't have anything to do because the IT department hadn't set up is computer.

That was awhile ago. At least last year, maybe the year before.

Who gives a shit?? why should he get arrested? That's some police state shit and nobody should be supporting it.

Because it's part of the social contract in Finland. Everyone does some type of service (military or civil).

Saying you want the benefits of society, but don't want to pay the cost is basically freeloading. It's no different than folks who refuse to pay taxes, because "mah monies!", but want full support of all civil services when they need them.

Some nations due to their population decided to have mandatory military service. It's not that uncommon and there are procedures to get out of it.

I don't support it or disapprove. It's what they decided as a nation to be in their security interests.

Also, many countries are broadly supportive of conscription.

The world is a big place.

This thread brings memories. I broke my toe in combat training and the doc just put a bandage on it. Of course later they realized it's broken when it became worse in further combat training... goddamn clowns :D

He has options. Military service, civil service and jail. It's not a gulag or anything.

Stil I have sympathy for OP. 18 year olds are still very young, the military can be a depressing place and the process to apply to civil service can be shitty especially if you haven't worked before.

Link please, I wanna have a laugh today.
I'm pretty sure it's this one: GAF, I've made a huge mistake. (Job related.)

You get free glasses (probably contact lenses too if you prefer) from military.
Are they.. normal-looking glasses. The US Army gives soldiers free glasses called BCGs.. nicknamed birth control glasses for obvious reasons.

Sorry OP, it's time to grow up, sometimes you just have to tough through shit.

My millitary service was miserable, but I did it.

He has 3 options and one is being arrested. That's not freedom, he is being forced to do something he doesn't want to do and not even in an economic pressure kind of way of just needing a job but also the potential of literally getting arrested. It's fucked.

Oh for fuck's sake.

In a utopia yes, it's fucked up. But we live next to the sleeping bear and it's not like things are going to a good direction concerning that bear.

Mandatory army service is the most ridiculous thing ever when i got that letter i never responded they can fuck themselves. Luckily i live in the Netherlands tho in wich it's not required by law anymore. And otherwise i am too short + weight too low and have a mental illness (adhd).

But in OP's case accept the boring job if you can still and go to school when you can again or search for a job you like or tolerate better for later.

Jail time will put you on a list/record wich can harm you getting good jobs in the future a criminal record lasts several years before it's cleared.

I really don't blame you tho it's sad that they still force army service there if you don't work or go to school. But to skip it accept the job OP believe me i would have done it too. Jail time might not be that bad in your country but a record lasts for a while wich could hurt your future perspective quite a bit.

I don't really get it. Why you just didn't take a job that wasn't as interesting or not interesting at all?

You don't get criminal record for refusing military and non-military service in Finland.

yeah, army in finland is some bullshit. i wasted 40 days on that nonsense until i managed to complain my way out of it.

So haven't worked in over 6 months, now 2 months house arrest - how are you eating? Paying rent? Affording anything?

If you have the money to stay home eating and playing video games for the next two months and are whining about that punishment for DECIDING not to take a boring job...

I'm sorry for your rough life, OP.

That's kind of what I was getting at earlier without coming right out and saying it, yeah...

No. He has been working unless I read the OP wrong. Just not in a place that you can do your non-military service. Job has to be provided by the city or goverment for it to qualify as non-military service.

This may be the most "millennial" OP I've ever read on here before. Holy crap.

op may not have taken the ideal route to do it, but i respect anyone who refuses to serve in finland. i should have done that instead of cheesing my way out of the whole thing, but i am a piece of shit.

all it would take is a generation of people refusing to go along with this nonsense to get rid of it.

The fact Finland even has mandatory military service in this day and age is absurd.

I still can't understand how any one could possibly support such a setup.

It also happens to be the only realistic option for the defense of Finland. No sympathy at all for OP, he had options all along.

And the jail thing will always be on your record, it will follow you the rest of your life

Suck it up and do something "not interesting" for a few months

you don't get a record if you go to jail for refusing to serve. you can even lie and say you did serve and no one will know, or care.

cannon fodder is not a realistic option at all. it's not 1939 anymore.

Yeah so let's go full pacifist wimp mode and collectively throw our arms up in the air? Russia would just love that.

The point of it all is to make invasion too costly for Russia, and continue fighting under occupation if need be. Defeatist attitudes like yours aren't helping.

Plenty of professions where jail time for refusing service will do fuck all to hurt one's chances to get jobs in said profession.

And I'm not even sure if it's a permanent record.

it's not defeatist, it's realistic. there is no good reason for conscription anymore. recruit a set number of people every year who are actually willing to do it and stop wasting time and money on people who either hate it or think of it as a summer camp. finland is so full of crazy military types scared of russia like you that there would be no shortage of volunteers.

tl;dr for only the relevant facts

OP left mandatory military service on the condition that he find a job within 6 months or face jail time. OP chooses not to take any job. OP faces arrest.

Very accurate tl;dr.

Not sure what's going on with OP... but there's a defence force for everything on GAF.

Who is talking about cannon fodder? It's about half of the population being able to run a guerrilla campaign against the occupying force.

haha oh wow.

if even 1% of people who wasted their time in the army became guerrillas then i would be shocked.

Yes, recruiting is as easy as you just said.

Sorry OP but this is all your own screwup. Like most of the paragraphs you write have nothing to do with anything. They immediately let you switch to civil service to which you apparently feel is beneath you so now you're protesting by going to jail. You can easily fix this but rather go to jail for some bizarre reason.

Says you. Volunteer armies may work elsewhere but our geopolitical reality is very different - it wouldn't be a convincing deterrent at all. Call me what you want, but at least I'm not the one with the rose-tinted glasses on.

You'd rather stay under 2 months house arrest than work a civilian job you don't find interesting for 4 months?

Bruh

Well to be fair towards the OP, if he goes for the house arrest he can keep working in his current job and actually make money during that 2 months. With non-military service you get about 14-20 euros a day depending on how far you are with the service. Financially it is way smarter to take the house arrest deal.

Here, schooling is mandatory til 16 (even 18 in some areas). Hard not to see how military service or working could simply extend that an extra few months, who cares?
