Yeah, but I kind of still like it for trying. It had amazing potential that is just lost in the sheer loopy mess it becomes the more you progress.

Neat. I remember renting out the original on PS2 but when it kept freezing at one point in a QTE, I gave up. I understand the story is a mess and I remember it getting pretty dumb right before that point where I gave up but I'd probably pick it up and give it a go anyway.

Lol to be fair, this really is a game that might just be so bad it's good.

It remains playable at least (awful stealth section notwithstanding) and man, it still lives in infamy as a plot that just shits itself inside out. The opening murder coverup scene is still great sequence. I honestly get Tommy Wiseau's The Room vibes from the misfires in the latter half of the game, it becomes hilarious schlock. Doesn't help David Cage models himself into the tutorial in piece of gaming hubris lol.

So true. The first 25% of the game I was thinking "Wow this is actually really intriguing, I can't wait for more video games like this"

By the end I was thinking "The fuck was that? Ok, they'll nail down the writing and plot by the next one, Omikron was cool."

The worst part about this game was that it started out so good. Having to cover up a murder you commit was a very interesting way to start and the early game's multiple scenarios all actually seemed to complement each other. Mistakes made covering the murder made it easier to ID Lucas and playing as Carla and Tyler was interesting (outside of a few embarrassing Tyler moments) as it made the player conflicted about whether to actually pursue the case or try to use their scenarios to find more answers to the overarching plot.

But then just...weird twist after weird twist after weird twist. Every action and decision you made early in the game is completely ignored or undone by some of the most moronic writing I've ever seen in a game. Instead of sticking to the mayan mysticism the game throws rogue AI's, giant VR ticks, alien ships that somehow grant matrix powers, an unfounded late-game relationship, and homeless guardians of the Earth at the player with complete earnest. Straight-faced as if the story wasn't completely corpse-fucking bonkers.

I still fail to understand how this game garnered such positive reviews considering these twists. I mean it's fun in a "so-bad-it's-good" way as the train wreck unfolds, but for a game whose experience is so dependent on story it is easily one of the most disappointing games I've ever played.

Wicked, never played the full game but loved the demo.

Don't do it man. Just...just leave that positive demo experience with you. Middle-to-late game is why David Cage gets the shit he gets.

3rd act went bonkers, but not really in a good or bad way, but an "ummmm-I-uhhh-I-think...." way. The intro, however, and a lot of other elements of the game, are incredible and still quite novel to this day, in terms of atmosphere and striking a real palpable moodiness. But the moments it takes itself too seriously and falls short is just a plain good hilarious time.

Because that was hardly remastered at all.

Indeed. I guess some textures were improved, and it supports 1080p, which I'm not sure the original release did. Also the remastered visuals remove a noise filter, which isn't really a positive as it makes textures look a bit flatter.
I expected they'd at least update the controller support. But nope. No Xinput. Can't map triggers on 360 controller, if I recall.

Botttom. You can tell by some book covers and the lack of noise filter. It's just weird that the books look pristine and the TV like a piece of shit.

Top. I can tell because I know the remaster has them brick walls. Which admittedly are higher res textures. Can't really tell here though. They changed the punching bag texture for the worse, for some reason. Everything else looks the same.
