Falcom is making a PlayStation 4 game

Next year sounds like a great year in terms of announcements from Japan-based studios.

All the titles teased at the pre-TGS conference this year should have a much clearer unveiling next year.

Japan Studio has already showcased a lot of its 2014 line-up, so next year's announcement should be in-line for 2015.

Devs like Tales team, Falcom, etc are already teasing PS4 projects, This implies at least an official announcement next year.

lol The Last Guardian & FFXV.

And the MS exclusives from their contracted 3rd-party developers.

Ys 8 with FFXV level graphics please

:( Never gonna happen, but would be awesome.
I'd shoot for next-gen Ni no Kuni-esque cel shading, with the artstyle of most Ys games it'd be a natural fit, seems a little more realistic as a goal, and I can't really imagine Ys going hyper realistic without either not feeling like Ys or looking like a nightmare. SO4 had the same character designer as Ys Seven and that was NOT a game that did well with more realistic graphics combined with anime design.

Don't expect a PS4 Tales announcement next year.

An Ys game on PS4 would make the system an instant purchase for me, just as Memories of Celceta was the reason why I bought my Vita.

Does ayone knnow how many developers Falcom has ?

I mean, they release one quality title after the next on multiple consoles and are always working on (2...or 3 ?) titles at the same time.

Impressive !

Another new PS4 title announced for Japan's PS4 launch:
Nobunaga’s Ambition: Creation Heading to the PS4 in Japan as a Launch Title

The latest game of the popular (at least in Japan) Nobunaga’s Ambition franchise titled Nobunaga no Yabo: Sozou (Nobunaga’s Ambition: Creation) has just been released for PS3 and PC on December 12th, but according to the upcoming issue of Dengeki PlayStation, that is already in the hands of some early birds in Japan, it’s headed to the PS4 as well.

The strategy title, of which you can see a trailer below (showing the PC version), will be released in the archipelago of the rising sun as a launch title for Sony’s new console, on February 22nd.

Will it ever be localized? Only time will tell, but my money is, unfortunately, on “no.” I hope to be proven wrong by Tecmo Koei.

As of last year... 48 employees.

Next to no one actually got their first exposure to Ys that way and it's been more brought up as an example of officially screwing up the name, some people are just making the same basic mistake Sega did then or are being asses and contrary for contrary's sake.

Admittedly a huge chunk of the problem before was that the PS2 and especially PS3 were a pain to develop for, I imagine that scared a lot of them from being willing to jump in sooner than later. Though RPGs can take quite awhile to produce too.

Also remember that for decades Falcom was primarily a PC developer. PS4 should be in their wheelhouse much more than PS3 was. Looking forward to this next game, even if it isn't Ys. Though, let's be honest, it's Ys.

Heh, I had brought that up before as a reason they probably would jump on sooner than the likes of Atlus.

Though I can see it being from the Zwei people (assume it was the Zwei people that did Nayuta no Kiseki) or another group that's been toiling away if they have one, though I know they're pretty small and development demands are rising.

SquareEnix with FFXV and KHIII, Namco with a Tales game, Falcom with their own game and there is also the rumored major Sony rpg.

Yup, the PS4s future looks bright.

I feel like Japanese developer take up with PS4 is starting to slowly gear up. Hopefully the easy development curve helps them transition more easily than last time.

Anyone know how it compares to PS3 adoption?

That'll be hard to tell until games actually start getting released. The PS3's initial support looked incredible. But the console got off to a slow start while handhelds and the Wii shot out the gate, which changed the PS3's support quite a bit.

Unless 7/Celceta turn me off I'll probably pick this up. Visually I'd be happy with any improvement on Celceta but it would be awesome to see something nice and clean-looking and 60fps.

If that picture from the OP is a teaser for the new game then it is most definitely Ys. I can spot Adol's profile quite easily.

Interesting. Falcom typically doesn't go in on high-end graphical ventures. I'm eager to see what it is they are planning to do.

Gigantic open-world Ys where you can get a ship and sail the entire world, picking up as many party members and rainbow-haired honeys as you can stand, plz

Unless this is another Kiseki sequel there's no way XSEED doesn't jump on a PS4 game from Falcom.
Yeah, anything for Sony aiding third parties should be saved for those without any stable NA connection or at least helping get some of these to EU (though NISA looks to be getting really good at covering for Atlus and XSEED), Falcom games probably don't need that unless they're Kiseki games, and if they're going to help they'd need to do something like coordinating a localization of The 3rd or something, advance work or an on-and-off localization pattern to get us up to speed within something vaguely resembling a reasonable time frame... though given how much of the series either is PC native or has PC ports it'd probably undermine getting them out on Steam, so still not ideal.

I find it interesting that someone like Falcom's making a PS4 game. What next? Culture Brain making a PS4 sequel to Magic of Scheherazade?

I'm wondering if it IS true, and PS4 is a developer's godsend compared to PS3.

It's not THAT odd. Falcom has been consistently active and moved to PSP then PS3/Vita recently, whereas I don't even know if Culture Brain exists now.

Falcom also made the Vita exclusive Ys: Memories of Celceta, which wasn't exactly a looker. Vita is supposedly an incredibly easy platform to develop for, so ...

What you aren't realizing is Memories of Celceta was a PSP game that got switched to Vita at the last minute when it got announced, too late to create new models/textures for everything. So it looks that way because the in-game graphics were mostly designed for PSP.

This could make me buy a PS4 if it is an Ys game...luckily I've likely got at least a couple years before we would ever see it in the US.

That isn't necessarily related to the PS4 project, though.

I'm interested to see what Falcom brings out in the next couple of years.

Even if that art is no way related to the PS4 project, here's hoping we get something similar in artistic style and color. The rich blue skies, the clouds basking in shades of orange and purple. The far off vistas and mountainous stage our hero is preparing to do battle with the dragon of many colors. You rarely see that sort of colorful art style in modern games. Oddly enough, it invokes the style seen in these earlier Falcom Ys covers:

Just a more modern take. I wouldn't mind seeing a new Falcom world(be it Ys related or something relate to it's other franchises, OR something new entirely) presented in such an artistic style with PS4's power. Enough of the emulation of realism. Bring on the more artistically stylistic games.
