...and it took the Spring 2010 anime thread eighty-nine days to collect this much...information.

At this rate, the Fall 2010 Thread will close fifty days after it opened. It probably won't carry on at this speed though because anime-season threads tend to calm down after the flurry of posts in the opening.

Individual threads should also ease the pain a bit.

Things are only questionable if you couldn't find the answer along the way, give me 76 minutes alone with a gender swapped Hideyoshi and I'd be able to give you an answer.
That amount of time seems much too premeditated. Sounds like you got some very specific "stuff" in mind.

Were you ever not?

Eagerly awaiting the reveals of Samurai Guys, My Little Brother Can't be this Cute and Blackhole Passengers, should be epic.

That's because i intend to use the remaining 1364 minutes left in the day to show you what I've learned.

Well, for Samurai Guys there's Hakuouki so your wish has been (partially) granted!

Plan backfired!
Did it now? Are you sure I wasn't just testing everyone?

Anyways, you should be resting and taking lots of vitamins and stocking up on coagulation agents in preparation for the big day not posting.

Seriously though, the thread naturally dies around this time of day, although if I did have that kind of awkward power it'd help me beat I9, which isn't looking like a realistic outcome no matter how I look at it.

On topic: My Giant Robo DVD shipped and I ordered Seirei no Moribito with it just to own it since it rocks so much.

I'm not sure I'm ready for 76 episodes of sports anime. Maybe someday.
Hajime no Ippo can be considered either shounen sports or shounen fighthing. If you consider it sports, then it's one of the best sports anime ever made. If you consider it fighting, then it's one of the best fighting anime ever made. Compare it to any anime, and it's one of the best anime ever made.

What the hell are you waiting for? ;)

Also, I'm one episode into Oniisama e........... The character designs, especially the females who look like dudes with long hair, weird me out. Like firehawk said somewhere in the last thread, it's as if someone turned the angst up to 11 on MariMite, minus the catholicism. I'm not sure if I can get past the character designs and keep watching more, honestly, and it may be just a tad too much wangst for me to stand.

Oniisama e is amazing. If nothing else, that show has more bitch per second than anything else ever made. I recommend watching up through the fourth episode and then seeing how you feel about the show. If you're not into the insane schoolgirl intrigue by then, the rest of the series may well be a wash for you.

I am totally stoked for more Genshiken. The author recently did a special bonus one-shot manga chapter for a DVD box set that looks to be the basis of Genshiken II, so anyone interested in seeing where the new manga series will be going should track that down.

In other news, Hito is absolutely right about Hajime no Ippo. God, it rules so hard.

Neo-ADV makes me laugh, they usually license stuff three people watched, and about three hundred show up to say they don't approve of sub only releases.

I'm allowed to say that because 90% of the stuff ADV and Neo-ADV picked up were things I had no interest in. Of their subbed only releases I'm only miffed about Gintama. I'm only miffed about that because it was the only (then) current show I could watch durring my perpetual burn out.

Occult Academy, Maya's Father

mAcOdIn said:
Is he, I don't really feel like going back and confirming that but it'd explain why they're even looking for Nostradamus' key, I didn't think a real military or whatnot would ever do such a mission.

I'm betting the aliens and the key are completely unrelated and the whole mission was just to save his daughter if he's in on the time travel.
firehawk12 said:
Why does this even matter? :lol

Because it actually would explain a lot. Like what macodin mentioned, and about why all the 'future people' are such bunglers. The few times we actively see Maya's father when he's alive, he's a pretty quirky guy. And it's revealed eventually in the show that the sole purpose of the Occult Academy's creation was
for Maya
, so it puts the rest of the craziness in perspective.

'Why would that matter'; it's just so the show isn't completely swept under the rug for incoherency. I like when a story has the foresight to allude to things revealed later on--RahXephon was really good at this too.

I can't take screencaps because crunchyroll's video stream is blocked at school. But compare how Maya's father looks in the first episode (or whenever else he shows up) to the
future man
who is always sitting with his hands folded in front of his face like Gendo.

This one was pretty straightforward, you didn't really miss anything important. Kunugi's daughter was killed during the first Mu war--which he was a part of (his involvement in that will come back later in the show). The song Quon played was the song his daughter was writing and left unfinished when she died. Quon was stressed out over the song at the beginning because it was unfinished, but Ayato somehow did something that made her deal with it.

Ayato and Megumi were just being pokey in regards to Kunugi's date (with his dead daughter's mother), they were trying to find him beforehand to give him flowers. Because you take flowers to a girl you're going on a date with. Then standard anime misunderstandings happen.

Not to mention the ridiculously awesome soundtrack, courtesy of Tsuneo Imahori.

Seriously, if you're worried about pacing and that episode count, Ippo moves along at a steady clip, deftly going in and out of matches. You don't get multiple episodes of people staring at each other. Even better, Ippo not only succeeds during matches, but also in their buildup and resolution. It makes the sport seem better than it actually is.

Speaking of resolutions, the scene where they introduce the song "Stand Proud" is so awesome.

If you gender swap a male character, do you also have to make them moe?

This is Kyon

You tell me

So whats the fascination with gender-bent characters? I mean, sure it creates some pretty attractive alternatives but...not that it bothers me I just dont understand it. Furthermore, what are the origins of some of these? Like Kyonko for example. I'm not bashing it, I just dont understand it.

No big origin stories or anything like that.

Anime and manga fans have a lot of spare time.

A fair amount of them also seem to be interested in "drawing manga" or just drawing in general.

Humans have a natural interest in sexuality and gender. Especially developing teenagers.

There exist a number of works, some of which are well known, that explore these ideas and concepts.

Combine this all together with the internet pooling peoples strange interests together.

Thus arises "weird shit".

I don't really consider it weird. Just curious. I guess it was kind of a dumb question, seeing how we can look back at some of the more memorable works that use it (Ranma) and then look at some of the not so stellar (Kampfer) and see that the influence has been around for a long time. Still makes me feel funny looking at Kyonko.

Pretty much, although some of it is pretty weird.

Ahhh I'm confused when I scroll through threads because I don't recognise my own avatar.

Anime fans tend to wonder what a character would be like with boobs.

Only genderbender worth a damn.
Which brings up a stupid point that I forgot to mention - "genderbending" works have an inherent advantage in animation vs live action.

The medium of animation is inherently fluid and transformative, so it makes sense for such works to appear within it.

Oh shit, Yuzu's jealous of Kokoro so Keppei broke it off.

Why am I liking this so much?

I still feel animation is a storytelling medium primarily and the way they handled it almost makes me feel like they're emphasizing the visual over the story, almost turning the art of animating into some weird kind of fetish where one's supposed to tune into what "looks cool" as opposed to what tells a good story.
Plausible if you ask this question for anything else. It might have made Code Geass what it is today.

Branduil said:
I'm fairly certain it's impossible at this point to make a female character someone wouldn't find moe. Even if you actively tried to make a character as non-moe and ugly as possible, it would end up being subverted.

I call this the Moe Inevitability Paradox.
But that's the beauty of moe. You'll know it when you see it.

mAcOdIn said:
Argh, this genderbender shit has gotta die. Horo would suck as a male, Oguie would suck as a male, Murasaki from Kurenai would suck as a male, lets stop this. Well, lets stop after we figure out the Hideyoshi thing.
I'm feeling deja vu from the Summer thread already.

Romeo X Juliet could have done some interesting things if this happened.

boo you guys are no fun, gender benders are fun >.> Read Mint na Bokura (same author as Marmalade Boy) or Pretty Face.

OK, Hitokage, I'm getting ready to watch Black Lion dubbed now, for really reals this time. This better be good. After that it's onto the last four episodes of Melody of Oblivion. If anybody has anything else that is awesome/crazy/terrible to recommend, now's the time!
Uhh...Goku's Midnight Eye or Baoh. Both are equally stupid.

Although Goku's does feature THE BEST WEAPON OF ALL TIME.

So, is there any good anime this season? No? No...

I want Star Driver to be awesome, as I love Bones, but the trailer pretty much said "Don't watch this. This is incredibly stupid, and unless you're a complete idiot, you will hate this."

The whole "I get highlights when I'm in my Mech" thing was dumb enough, but pretty much everything I've seen has been painfully stereotypical or horrifically silly.

I want to love it, but the trailer basically said "skip".

It'll be better than any Bones TV anime ever made, ever.

did someone post kampfer?
i came as fast as i could.

Fuck Strike Witches. Kampfer is truly the voice of our generation.

icarus-daedelus said:
Oh, I get that, and the whole reason I wanted to watch Oniisama E... and The Rose of Versailles is because they're so influential. (Well, mostly because of their influence on Revolutionary Girl Utena in particular, but still.) I have a love/hate relationship with shoujo, but I like it enough to actually be interested in its historical predecessors, unlike, say, mecha shows. I have nothing against 70s robot animu but nothing is ever going to make me want to watch any of it.

Yeah, I hear ya. Certainly it's why I thought about checking it out after Jexhius posted his impressions of the first few episodes anyway.

People should be interested in watching things because they are good, like Rose of Versailles. If you cared about influence you'd go back to Tezuka's Princess Knight lead Sapphire. :P

Ranma doesn't have a douijin of the main character fucking his female self. Kampfer does.
I haven't even looked into this, but I'm absolutely sure you're wrong. Two decades is a long time to escape such treatment.

Ranma is little more than a Ryuunosuke spinoff with added bullshit.

Tenshi na Konamaiki is worth checking out, though.
One of my favourite shows that actually deals with the complexities of gender in a somewhat meaningful way. Even the ending is brilliant in keeping with the theme of the show.

Watching something influential can be illuminating though. You can see the development of trends rather than assuming authors of works like Rosario + Vampire are products of some evil and nefarious spell summon.

Well I do it all the time, I'm just being cheeky ;)

Especially working backward in time (Utena > Rose of Versailles > Princess Knight) though I heard Belladonna of Sadness inspired Utena as well and I've yet to get around to that!
