And you clearly haven't gotten around to Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei yet. Outrageous.
I just searched for doujin websites on google, and then searched individual websites.

Isn't that that one propaganda movie? I'll get to that one day.

Indeed a.k.a the first anime (disputable).

Holy crap this thread got big fast. Reading it all is going to take up a whole evening.
Luckily, much of thread isn't that...vital.

I heard Belladonna of Sadness inspired Utena as well and I've yet to get around to that!

I'm not sure how much Belladonna of Sadness may have influenced Utena, but I can say that it's amazing in an erotic, early 70s, psychedelic sort of way. You totally want to watch it.

FnordChan of Sadness

I was told this in 2008 and I've still not watched it. In fact I often intended to watch it only to watch something else instead, maybe I'll actually watch it this weekend.

I think Ranma was the first anime I ever saw.
It's hard for me to say what was the first anime I've seen considering all the cartoons that Nickelodeon used to air in the late 80s. The first title I've seen while being aware it was from Japan narrows it down considerably but I'm like 90 percent sure not 100. The first title I saw subtitled I remember clearly:

Project A-ko.

Speaking of, Belladonna of Sadness sure would be a more fitting title for Oniisama e... than Brother, Dear Brother. :lol Or at least less misleading.
She does say it like three times an episode. Then again people are sad/bitchy just as often :lol

Well, recommendations of quality from people whose opinions I trust are the first thing I take into account, but even then it sort of has to possess a premise or be in a genre I like for me to take note. Especially if it's 39 episodes long.
So, what you're saying is you don't trust me or Firehawk. Outrageous

Regarding Belladonna's influence on Utena, I've only read the following quote, and it's on fucking Wikipedia:

Kunihiko Ikuhara, director of the S and Stars seasons of Sailor Moon and Revolutionary Girl Utena has stated that Kanashimi no Belladonna was his inspiration to work in anime. The influence is more clear in Utena than in Sailor Moon.

I'm pretty sure Princess Knight is too old school for me to tolerate. I think 1970 is the furthest I can go back for TV shows, unless Japan has a secret stash of old-ass awesomeness somewhere akin to Rocky & Bullwinkle or Looney Tunes in the US.

Pfft I'd try and grab the manga from somewhere rather than watch the anime myself but then again this is the fall 2010 anime thread.

/a/ tends to lie to me, I'm not even sure if they provided any source. In fact someone probably added that after the fact!

But I did grab it based on a separate recommendation, so it's not a total wash.

Did a hardcore gender bending discussion seriously happen last night? :lol

I recently read a manga where there's a whole clan of people that can switch their gender. Wasn't bad.

Wut.

That wiki entry is incorrect. Ikuhara worked on the first two Sailor Moon series in a non-leading role, directed S and SuperS, then left the production. He didn't do Stars.

It was the afternoon!

And all I did was change my avatar.

Didn't he have a major(ish) role in Sailor Moon R?

Even Wada is pumped for Star Driver. You just know it's going to kick ass.

:lol

I was expecting Fairy Tail to be a pretty average adaption but I wasn't expecting such awesome music. Or magic activation animation so long and crap it puts Final Fantasy VII to shame.

Harem anime/manga don't count.
But that's such a rich field of...yeah.

The Big O
20 : Hey look, it's a lot of those problems with season II all in once place.

- Roger is randomly doing something for no reason, rather than a contract.
- Roger's dialogue gets really, really weird. Then again, this happens to everyone's dialogue during season II.
- Episode structure?
- A robot fight that doesn't have the weight or direction of season I.
- In the very first episode Dorothy could out-run a machine gun. Why is she suddenly so slow now?
- Something randomly happens with memories to create tension.

People should be interested in watching things because they are good, like Rose of Versailles. If you cared about influence you'd go back to Tezuka's Princess Knight lead Sapphire. :P

That show was awesome. I wonder how it would hold up today, if I would still love it or if it is simply nostalgia clouding my memories.

The "O" stands for tomato.

Oniisama e... 13 :

Those...curls...

I realise most of the faces are very similar (this is can be a problem in every decade, I guess) but I give it a pass because all the hair and clothing detail is so awesome.

I guess some plot happened as well but who cares about that.

Just take out the Tomatoes and you'd have season one!

It's like someone dumped a carton of Prego all over the second season.

"Homemade Memories. It's in there!"

Just finished Oh! Edo Rocket! Really loved how the whole thing was handled, the humor in it was unexpected at times which made it even better. Going to buy this once the DVD comes out in November for future rewatches. Going to start on Monster after a short break.

Fuck Strike Witches. Kampfer is truly the voice of our generation.

I laughed. Then I cried. Then I went into a extended bout of manic depression.

Shizuku is the only good thing about that show. She needs her own spinoff.

What is everyone's verdict on XXXHolic? I watched a few episodes with someone at the hospital and it seemed pretty okay.
I like it quite a bit. As I haven't read the manga I'm free from any comparison with that (which apparently it doesn't do favourably against).

It's always useful to have those shows where people are detectives/investiagators/problem solvers for paranormal events. Like Mushishi, Natsume, Requiem for the Darkness and Mononoke (although I think those are all superior shows). Surely that sub-genre should have it's own name.

Plus I really enjoy the shows mood and tone. But from what I understand it really isn't for everyone.

Watch the movie and ignore everything else.

<3 CLAMP

I heard the anime wasn't that good but I have not seen it. I'm fond of the manga, even if it makes no sense at times.

It'll never be as nonsensical as Tsubasa.

I watched 30 episodes of Tsubasa ReservOIR Chronicle before I realised what a waste of time it was.

So, is there any good anime this season? No? No...

I want Star Driver to be awesome, as I love Bones, but the trailer pretty much said "Don't watch this. This is incredibly stupid, and unless you're a complete idiot, you will hate this."

The whole "I get highlights when I'm in my Mech" thing was dumb enough, but pretty much everything I've seen has been painfully stereotypical or horrifically silly.

I want to love it, but the trailer basically said "skip".

Was Heroman any good?

LOGH 26: UNENDING SADNESS.

Not true! It gave us this. Along with many other excellent tracks from the first OST.

I was spoiled a bit by TVtropes actually, not of this death but of another major one.

Still that gives me something to look forward to.

Poor Reinhard ;_; What will you do now?
