Is there lots of panning over dramatic still shots in a poor effort to hide the lack of animation in a given scene?

Hell yes there is, but I would like to believe he does it less to hide the lack of animation and more because it's awesome.

Urgh. Well, scratch Star Driver. There really aren't any dependable anime studios anymore.

Anything with even a hint of promise this season?
Bakuman was solid, and OreImo turned out surprisingly good if you're entertained by such things.

Oh, I don't know if the OreImo thread is still alive, but oh well. The show is basically what I thought it would be. I'm assuming the climax of the series will be that he gets caught with all the sister porn and the girl has to decide whether or not to "save" him from being ostracized by his family/friends. Yay anime!
It's alive and well. Come join the festivities there.

Checked out MM! as well. It certainly looks like a Xebec show in any case. Typecasting Jun Fukuyama as the masochist is so expected. Crude and agressive Azunyan was also slightly amusing too. Ayana Taketatsu sure got a lot of roles this season (among others like Saori Hayami and Aoi Yuuki). The show is decent enough maybe I'll keep up with it on the side. This first episode did have a crossdresser, a masochist and possibly a couple sadists too. How can we go wrong? It's got to be better than Ladies versus Butlers.
I thought the 1st episode was quite nice actually, but I don't think the show can entertain me for more than 10 episodes.
I await more of Tatsukichi and see what they will do with him.

Gamlin. About-face LIKE A BOSS
Basara: "Suicide mission? This is concert lulz"

I still don't know if this show is good or not, but by this point I'm absolutely positive I could pass for clinically insane. As such, I'm finding the show extremely fun to watch.

Halycon's guide to identifying Mono no Aware in Anime:

Every time the camera focuses on a petal/leaf/waterdrop/snowflake/bird/fish in motion, that's mono no aware.

Every time the camera pans from the sky/moon/space to show a village/valley/ruins/city/our heroes or vice versa, that's mono no aware

Every time someone throws out a deep and profound one liner on the state of the world/the hero/the scenery/life/poetry, that's mono no aware.

Every time the main lovebirds slowly turn their heads to look at each other, before turning them back and looking out over the horizon, preferably at a sunset/sunrise, that's mono no aware.

Not when Kazuo Umezu does it.

He is the like the opposite of mono no aware.

I saw the new Star Driver anime. I am mad that the green guy lost to the red guy. Also the red guy needs to stop saying fabulous, it's so cringe worthy. Otherwise the fight was cool but still I'm mad the green guy lost.*

*Green is his favorite color while red is his least liked.

I'm really enjoying the OVAs and want to say Dynamite 7 is actually legitimately good but honestly I have no idea if that's just the residual dementia from marathoning 7 in such a short time. I need help. :(

And yeah, it was around episode 38-40 that I really started to enjoy 7, despite still being fully aware how utterly retarded it is.

So I finished the Aim for the Ace compilation movie and it was really good. I really wish I could have read the manga or watched the full TV series, but they aren't fully translated. The pacing in the compilation movie obviously really rushed.

Yea, I watched the movie recently and then promptly downloaded and watched 1-16 of the tv series. It's jarring going from the far superior movie designs to the tv show, which looks bad in comparison to just about anything. As you said, it's probably the preferred way to experience Aim for the Ace since the characters are definitely fleshed out more in the show. Surprisingly, it's a forerunner to Gunbuster (obviously) but also Oniisama e -- character archetypes reappear along with strikingly similar character designs. Anyway, I find the Aim for the Ace tv, thus far atleast, rather thick on melodrama, which would be fine if it had any real weight behind it. Alas, Hiromi's habitual crying over nothing gets old rather quick (also, she seemingly has no parents). Anyway, I really wish someone would finish subbing the rest of the show, as the second series really improves in the art and animation department and the later OVAs even more so.

Japan released the movie last year on Blu-Ray: looks lovely.

Starship Operators wasn't half-bad.
I think.
Based on my few memories of the show.
It was ok. Hard for me to recommend because it straddles the line of idiotic and passable but there were some parts that were fun in it.

I was about to say that wasn't much of an accomplishment but you already covered that.

I know some people didn't like it, but Sora no Woto is easily my favorite anime of the year so far. Nothing else has come close...
I don't mean to talk too much trash concerning Sora no Woto because as I told Firehawk I actually did like it I just thought it could have been way better so I was also disappointed with it at the same time. All I was really doing was responding to Firehawk saying Jexhius only liked boring sci-fi and really, nothing happens in Sora no Woto so in a way I'd classify it as boring, even if that kind of thing is relaxing or endearing to people. I just think "boring" is the wrong label to try and pin on sci-fi shows that jexhius likes as his tastes would kinda mirror my own, his seemingly unbound love for Star Driver scares me as it really looks like something I wont enjoy so I'm hoping that he's just getting tired of his current role and wants to fit in more.

Also I have no idea what "mono no aware" is it how you ask someone if they're aware that they have mono in Japanese?

Also, I watched MM, fuck that show is terrible. It's going to be 12 episodes pretending to work on curing him of his masochism and then the final episode will be one where everyone comes to the conclusion that people should love and embrace themselves as they are and the blonde midget will learn she's a sadist and they live happily ever after or some shit. But for some reason I like the nurse.

Dynamite 7 was kinda meh to me but I think it's because they kind of dumped the cheese element to it and it's kind of not as fun to watch. Also, Basara singing that he wants to see the whales is still stuck in my head.

Done with school stuff, finally watching Star Driver... it has one hell of an opening. Right behind Arakawa's first opening as the best of the year, for me.

Oh snap, an ad for Sengoku Basara party CD. Must... have...

I love it because it really expands on the cultural elements of the universe and feels a lot more personal. It's hard to describe. Things like the whale poaching and hearing cover versions of old songs in alien languages adds a nice dynamic to the franchise, instead of focusing on stupid protodeviln and silly plot contrivances like spiritia. The whole thing feels like a nice way to wind-down after the insanity of Macross 7.

Jexhius said:

That's the best kind of villainy, if there's a limit then the person's not really a villain, just someone with a misunderstood or bad but well meaning intention.

Also, Jackson Browne's Load Out/Stay is still an incredible song after all these years.

DY_NASTY you are going through macross 7 quicker then luka.:lol

Yeah I took a few days off in the middle so it was really 2 seperate marathon sessions. I was just..worried about my mental health.

edit: Elma is freaking awesome

firehawk12 said:
Yep. It's also filled with mono no aware, so while jokingly people call it K-On meets Aria, they weren't wrong. :lol
Would I have liked it more if it was a bit more serious and had adult characters? (and didn't have the "pee" episode?) Probably, but that's anime for ya.
(Also, Yuu Kobayashi!)
They should just have slapped on "from the director of Elfin Lied" and everyone would have realised how pretentious the show was.

Wow Osamu Dezaki directed Aim for the Ace as well. Everything I watch seems to made by this guy. I guess he did a lot of the great classic shoujo anime.

I might consider doing the same next month. Let's hope i can survive the insanity.

Star Driver is pretty fabulous. The first episode doesn't really tell me much beyond that, but I'm anticipating it needing the Code Geass treatment, where the show becomes a blast to watch the moment you stop taking any of it seriously.

Marathons are the only way to watch anime.

Actually I started on Macross 7 two weeks ago, but I was too shell shocked by the first episode to keep watching. Soon enough SIIVVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIL was music to my ears.

I'm hoping I can at least finish the season tonight so that I can check out actual new stuff. I'm still going to need a Max Jenius avatar - I'm almost positive he could kill Goku.

Edit: Miria The President :lol :lol :lol

Even if he couldn't kill Goku I'm sure he could move him to bear his child!

I am seriously considering taking the plunge as well, if only to experience the confusion and insanity first hand. Then again, it could just be my current DYRL? high clouding my judgment.

Why aren't you watching star driver or panty&stocking instead? surely they'll be a better waste of time then MM!

Jexhius said:

Like I said, hard to tell. It could go the G Gundam route and be completely self-aware the entire time while being awesome, or go the Code Geass route and take its ridiculous plot seriously to the point of not even realizing its being oppressively mocked.

Either result will be faaaabulous though!

While this would normally be blasphemy to my eyes, i would actually agree with this. :lol

really need to finish SDF Macross so i can check out DYRL

That may be the cause, but you'll eventually understand that reasoning is meaningless. Come. Join us.

Maybe I'm a masochist? Crunchyroll will have Panty and Stocking up free in a week, I'll see it then. Was kinda waiting to see if any more shows will be picked up right at the start like last season where there were some last minute licenses but it looks like no one's going to do Star Driver in my country. Betting those also suck as well though, not sure if I'd consider any of them better wastes of time, that implies they are still wastes of time to begin with.

My thinking followed yours exactly.

Before all else, prepare your body - you've never rocked this hard in your life.

Thats probably why I loved SDF Macross so much. At ep 27 or so when everything is 'done', the show could've stopped and I wouldn't have had a complaint. Instead they give it another 10 eps of pretty darn good solid conclusion.

Animal-eared maids?
"I can smell a boy?"
Numerous fanservice shots
Girls in cages
GALACTIC Bishōnen
Bad guys in underwear with masks on under a base under a school
A dance battle

I don't believe the show is being subtle about it's intentions.

Despite that it was still fairly dull to me. Maybe it was trying a bit too hard in the first episode?

Or you just have bad taste didn't like it? The pacing may have been a smidge too manic.

But I don't know, it's being met with a lot of praise.

Well I didn't hate it, but it didn't exactly excite me either. I probably had my expectations risen a bit by the love train the residents here started.

I think these past few seasons being terrible was done on purpose so they could lower everyone's expectations and standards. It was collusion I tell you.

Code Geass was met with a lot of praise too you know. And that show actually started out pretty well if you'll remember :P
