Fall 2010 Anime Thread: Reboots, Retreads, and Rediscovery

Checked on some Gunbuster yesterday and finished it some time ago and it was interesting.

Its funny how
being in space can make you psuedo-"immortal" in this :lol but i liked the concept. It also showed it wasn't all positive for Nariko since she couldn't even she her friend again and it seemed everyone had "progressed" leaving her behind (hell Kazumi did it also).

As for the characters:

Noriko was middling until she finally got serious and turned out great.
Kazumi had her ups and downs (nice sparkles in the beginning though :lol )
Jung's heel to face turn was wtf fast, but she still did some dick moves (especially when Noriko is involved).
Coach was a dick but he was still great and always had complete faith.
The Captain was alright but he's definitely no Global.

Gunbuster itself was mad hype and looked badass with its arms crossed.

Gainax don't mind the fanservice either (breast jiggles, nipples, full frontal nudity, etc) :lol

And wth @ the last episode in black and white plus the final battle in stills.

Crazy ending and i really wonder
who did the signal?. Giving the Gunbuster some warping capability would have helped imo.

Need to check out Diebuster.

That comes from special relativity. When they were in space, they were going really fast, so they experienced time differently from the people going slow like us. It's not like they aged differently just because they went into space. lol

I know, but it just gave off that vibe :lol

It must be a weird thing to experience though

Index seems good even if the first episode was filler. If the opening is any indication of how things will play out, I'm expecting it to be better than the first season.

Lol, ok.

And they do go into warp with just the Gunbuster, don't they? Like, in episode 4 or 5 where they take out a whole bunch of the aliens? Or were they attached to some other ship? The reason they had trouble at the end of the series was because of that thing they took out to active the Black Hole Bomb.

For the bunch of aliens they were on the Exelion fighting them off and used its explosion to make a black hole. They were far away from it when it happened

Oh, ok. I forgot that. What about the last battle? Didn't they warp into that one? (I thought they boarded Gunbusters before warping, at least.)

I almost want to say I kept watching KOR after the initial disappointment just to get to the ED.
I'm largely staying to see if we can get any more POV-punch to the face-through-glasses shots.

Never seen that one before.

Not to mention the subtlest narration ever "Just let me pause everything..."

I will say this though, despite the all powerful status quo really dragging the show down in the second half, the ending is great.

They actually punched a hole into the bomb and entered though there (even Jung started to tag along until she was convinced other wise). When the explosion itself happened they tried to fly way and even when they finally reached Earth the Gunbuster was fucked up.

The bomb/ship itself could warp though.

Star Driver 2: Does Kanako's husband care that she's such a harlot?

The "virgin" subtitle popping up on the screen for the guy riding the motorcycle was pretty funny.

The fights are well-animated but the ending this week was a complete asspull.

Oh no. I meant when going to the final battle. So, like when they got to the place where they were going to detonate the Bomb, before the aliens did that short jump

About the Jung thing
Don't you think it was weird that her mech couldn't dive in there? I mean, that mech was a part of the Black Hole Bomb, right? I would think they would build a mech that could withstand the pressure.

The ships were heading there and the bomb warped beside them. While they were escorting the ship/bomb the aliens did the short warp and tried to kamikaze the ship/bomb

Were the Gunbusters on the ships? I thought they were already outside of ships before everyone warped to the final battlefield. Oh well, I guess every Gunbuster in that era after the black hole bomb was able to warp.

Looks like the fleet already warped near the destination and the bomb followed with its own warp. While waiting for the bomb to warm up they unleashed the busters as added protection, then the aliens unexpectedly short warped.

As for Jung
i just put it as the production ones not being the same quality as the Original (so as to make it easier to produce). But it is wierd though

Hmm, ok. I should rewatch the end of the movie again sometime so it's fresher in memory. I forget the little details. You should hurry to Diebuster soon ^^

I think of all the shows recced here for this season- the only one I liked was Squid Girl of all things.

One last thing: Banner/Crest of the Stars: anime or manga better? May try to get into that next.

Don't worry, you'll see more of it ;)

(Actually, they even parody it a lot in Gurren Lagann, lol)

The manga is a anime > manga adaptation. Avoid at all costs. Watch the anime.
Espesically since the manga condenses one season worth of material into one volume.:lol

Nice :)

Having already seen Gurren Lagann , more likely this was the influence (i have been watching the "originators" of certain things in anime so its always shocking to see the possible influence).

ANIME.

The only one i would say over the anime is the Novel itself.

So they went, novel --> anime --> manga ? Odd

I thought they would at least do:

novel --> anime
. --> manga

? I only edited a "." in because I thought it would preserve the spaces (though it does not.) I guess I should have just done ""
Looked like you went novel > anime > manga on the bottom as well, without the spacing.

Oh, I can see how you could read it that way. I wish there was a good way to preserve spaces >_< Actually, the code tags can do that, maybe?

Macross Frontier ep 15 - I think I know where this is going...

I hate Ranka.

(I can't stand Luca pusspants either, but at least he doesn't have a lot of screentime)

How's S2? Never got to it myself.

I'm on about episode 7 of S1. I'm pretty sure I'll be moving straight on to S2, though.

Wonderful show. Russell Tovey is just a great actor, and Annie is sizzling.

Ah, S1. I think if I didn't watch the first pilot (which is apparently still canon, even though that makes absolutely no sense), I would have liked it more than I did. Something about cast and tone changes just threw me off for the whole show.

Luca is suppose to be the max of the show too.:(

And dude it's no surprise you hate ranka. You hated lynn minmay after all! one thing i gotta give to minmay though, at least she looked her age.:lol

I also felt that changing Yukito from
a homeless weirdo who hangs out with a retarded girl and then turns into a bird and disappears for no goddamn raisin
into the third part of a three-person family was a good move
There was a reason, but that's if you believe many things - that Yukito was a descendant of Uraha and Ryuya, why Yukito was aware of the Kannabi no Mikito legend from his mother, and why he inherited such power. It's actually sad Yukito becomes a crow because a black bird in some legends signify an impending death... But all this is preceded with you believing the familial bond Yukito and Misuzu developed in the summer was enough of a reason to justify his sacrifice. Then again, it is Key anime as some would say, tragic-moe and such.

S2 also has Lyndsey Marshall (Cleopatra from Rome) in a labcoat.

Kimagure Orange Road : Before moe and tsundere and shy and clumsy girls set in their positions in the world there were..other characteristics that female characters could have. Like 'crazy'.

No doubt these are just clichés from a different era, but it's always nice to mix things up a bit.

Ah yes, the 80s. The series holds its nostalgia surprisingly well considering its age.

Resisting temptation to chain avatar quote.

Togainu no Chi is pretty boring, about halfway in and it's nothing remarkable. Based on an yaoi game, apparently, but the studio said they toned it down for mass consumption--whatever. Dropped.

It's based on a GURO yaoi game, they couldn't not tone it down and show it on TV. :lol

Naruto's 15th ED that started this season has pretty solid animation. Yoshimichi Kameda contributed to the action animation in it too. It's nice to see him branch out more and more after his work on FMA:B.

Unlimited bladeworks.
i get that they were trying to convey archers rediscovery of emiyas heroic ideals through emiyas resolute hope in the face of archers despair, but
seriously what the fuck.

That, at least, is true.

I was actually more put off by it in the opening scenes and not so much by the end.

Kimagure Orange Road 3 : Oh god, the 80's version of Maid Cafe's is just too much to take :lol

It's rare to see a work date its self so heavily in a single scene, that doesn't involve music (or just obvious stuff like character designs).

In anime form, our protagonist manages to screw up another winning situation. And considering that he'd just saved a child from drowning in front of 'that girl he likes', it's amazing that it only take a minute for him to mention that he should be on a date with another girl, who happens to be this girls friend. Classic. I can see why we got plenty of episodes.

And now we're past the opening where characters actually interact Ayukawa is rolling out to be a full "tsundere". Oh goody. At least she has some variety though.

A little question: Do somebody know the song that the "fish girl" is singing when there is Me... Cybody fight? (Star Driver). The song is much better than the OP or ending.

Heresy

And I sort of liked Minmei at first, once she started gaining fame is when I had to resist urges to buy and slap around my own Minmei doll. I was always trying to like Ranka, never could. I've given up now. Doesn't help that she ruins every song she's on.
