Revy-service followed by ALLEGORY AND ALLUSION

What the fuck is this, Tale of Genji?

Have they slept together yet. It's been what, a year? 2?

Followed by maidservice.

Seriously asking to be banned there, sir.

Everyone in this thread who isn't insane praises it, yet you're sitting there making bullshit excuses!

Rock's just afraid of what she'll do to him.

There was, and it was inferior.

Branduil said:
It's my personal rule not to watch anime longer than 26 episodes unless the concept really intrigues me.

I need a bit more than "boxing anime."

Manly men being manly... or somesuch.

Then again, I need to watch Slam Dunk sometime so I shouldn't talk I guess.

Well, as I already said, I have a personal bias against sports anime.

I'll probably try watching it eventually but I need to finish some things in my backlog first.

Like RahXephon, yech.

MORE SYMBOLISM AND METPAHORS.

This is almost as bad as the submarine episode.

Why only half an episode?
My friend was watching it when I went to his room. He was in the middle of the series so I just watched part of it while I had no idea what was going on exactly, so I wouldn't spoil myself should I decide to pick it up. The fights are pretty intense so I planned to, but I guess I just forgot over time.

Bon.

I have not seen it, but the time is swiftly rolling around when I will actually have to work, instead of just dipping my toes in it while I have animu playing on the top left of my screen. I can't voluntarily take on any more, even films.
Oh yes. I think it's coming out on blu-ray here around nov / dec. So you can hold off until then, or you could double-dip like i am doing. (already own the dvd version).

Say it ain't so.

Harsh laws.

I'm far more concerned with those who haven't even seen their Ghibli.
I actually know one person who hasn't seen one ghibli film and it depresses me.:( :lol

Source material is best material.
There's actually a number of adaptations in manga > anime. That objectively destroy the source material - mushi-shi being a great example.:P

So if I get all pretentious and bullshit up a philosophical essay it'll break an arbitrary rule over having one of the highest levels of execution in anime?

I just want to hear some reasons I should watch it besides "it's really good."

You know so do i. For some reason i couldn't comprehend the idea of watching a anime about sports, but then i watched hajime no ippo!

Is hajime no ippo like Eyeshield 21? (Storywise I mean, I know the anime is terribad)

EDIT: Holy shit this was boring as fuck.

Well...it IS really good.

It's funny, there's pretty much no filler except for a recap episode or two that you can just skip, it's well animated and has good pacing.

It's good even if you have no interest in boxing or sports manga.

But is it better than or equivalent to a boxing story like, say, Rocky?

Hajime no Ippo successfully taps into the inherent drama of competitive sports, and portrays its sport in such a way that you wish the real thing were more like it. It takes care to develop the characters involved in each fight to get you emotionally invested, execute each fight well enough to be thoroughly exciting and engaging, and then gives them proper denouement so that the consequences are truly felt. What's most impressive is how it manages all of this with an excellent sense of pacing. It really cannot be said enough that despite its similarities to both sports and fighting anime it doesn't fall into any of their pacing traps. The show may be 76 episodes long but it doesn't drag during a single one.

Hitokage said:
It was localized under the name "Fighting Spirit".
$55 bucks for a 76 episode anime seems reasonable. Going to have to wait till my next check though.

EDIT: Wait there is more volumes... Well the prices of the DVDs after that go up a lot, but the alternative is spending $200 on Volume 1 and 2 of the collections. Why did you have to die Geneon? Going to have to buy Vol.9,11,12, and 15 at inflated prices.

Katangatari 10 : About average for this series I suppose. The protagonists have to defeat their own inner demons!

Not as fun as last months.

Black Lagoon : Roberta's Blood Trail 2 : A pretty good episode, even though the production values are roughly TV quality.

This is why Black Lagoon is a great show : it's more than just a series of action scenes. We get plenty of development for Rock here, and even some fleshing out of his relationship with Revy.

The only problem is that it's gonna be awhile before the next one.

I guess this series likes shower scenes?

Just checked the mail and I got this in from RightStuf:
PhenZl.jpg

I'm not sure how I feel having my name on something with a trio of little girls on it. People might start thinking I'm weird.

Super Gals is awesome.

Show of the season right here just drop whatever you're watching and watch this instead.
I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but I'm totally with you.
Branduil said:
The first season of Gunslinger Girl is much better than the manga. Can't think of any other examples at the moment.
Off the top of my head:

Kaiji
Mushishi
Aria
Hajime no Ippo
K-ON
Yu Yu Hakusho
Hellsing Ultimate
Read or Die
Natsu no Arashi
The Legend of Koizumi

And the list goes on.

Is Aria anime really better than the manga?
I find the manga better even simply because of the art, Kozue Amano is just too good.

Reminds me of the time I ordered an Oh My Goddess DVD from the library once. Of course, I didn't look at the art of the case until after I ordered it.

It wasn't even that good, dammit.
I'd usually be okay with it, but the fact that I have new roommates who probably don't know I watch anime made me feel a bit weird about it. I'd rather they find out with something not plastered with little girls on it at least since my collection mostly consists of mechs which is easier to wrap someones mind around me liking.

Ashiteru ze Baby:
Marika's a bitch.

Black Lagoon OVA 2

I'm really fucking surprised this hasn't happened yet :lol

Was cool seeing Rock going almost insane though.

Infinite Ryvius 14-16 : There's not a lot I can really criticise this show about. I mean, even though it's not a mecha show, it manages to have some of the most memorable mecha scenes around.

It's cast is large, but well developed and recognisable.

It's animation and art design are good.

It's plot is revealed through the audience paying attention, rather than the audience being hit over the head with it.

Solid character interactions driver this sci-fi show.

I guess the music is a bit lame.

And Yuki is always, always a douche. Which is hilarious because he keeps calling Kouji a tool.

Yuki has severe rage issues. I guess that's why all the chicks fall for him.

I liked to pretend that drill-ship captain was Simon going mad after losing Nia.

YYH ep 66

Why can't everyone be this manly?

Toguro is even more badass after the tournament.

That's all good, but it also sounds like a lot of sports anime. And it's not like I don't like sports anime, but I guess I'm coming from it from the other direction. Branduil doesn't like long shows or sports shows whereas I've done two Adachi shows plus a lot of other sports anime (yeah, I'm throwing Saki and Taishou Baseball Girls in there) so I feel like I'm not sure what else I can get out of the genre.

Well, other than the fact that like Slam Dunk, Hajime no Ippo is yet another "canon" work that I should watch sometime (that's an 180+ episode commitment right there. :lol).

The Choro Club sound track and Sato's directing really sell the stories though.

From the Wikipedia entry, it sounds like the direct polar opposite of Kuragehime. :lol
