Sounds like a truly thoughtful and introspective look at the impact of World War II.

Maybe someone should animate a version of WW2 where Dolphin and Whale really are the ones responsible for dropping the bombs.

:lol I like the way you think.

I once read a manga about the virtues of whale meat. It was by some crazy conservative guy or something. I wish I remembered what it was called I would like to read that again.

What's stupid is that even if whale meat cured all disease, if you hunt them to extinction there won't be any more!

Especially as it leaves the show with no cool, strong, female characters. They're all in it for their men. Apart Blue's girls but they're useless.
What about Cullen? She may be into Yuki but she struck me as the most grounded and independent of the Ryvius ladies.

Jexhius said:
Also, life may have been harsh under Blue's rule but shit did get done faster. Dictatorship for the win?
I love the different perspectives on government this show cycles through and how they're all depicted as flawed in one respect or another. (I also love how Heigar finds himself entrenched with greater and greater influence no matter what the regime.)

Granted, it helps to have most of the characters semi-warped. :lol

Branduil said:
Kouji is a fairly perplexing character but after the ending I understood somewhat why he was the main character.
Ryvius is the closest I've seen in anime to an animated equivalent of LOST.
Jack spends the entire series trying to lead everyone.
Kouji spends the entire series trying to please everyone.
Both only develop when they confront their flaws and move beyond them.

Branduil said:
Seriously? I need to find those then, there were a couple things I really wanted more information on.
The additional animated clips are difficult to track down. I was originally tipped off to them via the artbooks and managed to eventually find them on an FTP share. But that was many years ago. duckroll might have an idea as to where to find them. The one focused around Ikumi was particularly enlightening.

The 2 volumes of the manga are a companion piece to the show in that it maps out the events of the TV series predominantly from Aoi's perspective. So you'll see some of the same story bits and then you'll have other new scenes that parallel other events from the show where she wasn't at the forefront.

iirc his reasoning was more along the lines of "If you don't eat whale meat you're not a patriot" and "back in my day we had whale me every day, for breakfast." Not the most sound arguments.

All the smart people know it's better to be the man behind the man.

Now that I think about it if they added flashbacks it might have made the series better. Though the pacing might have suffered.

I see. Well, I may not be able to find the clips, so I don't mind if you spoil it for me.

UBW had some amazing moments, though they needed to explain certain things in a better way. I had to read Wikipedia to understand Archer's motives :lol

Yeah, you really shouldn't watch it unless you've read F/SN before. DEEN compacted the story pretty badly.

I know. Even my sister, who loved FSN, was dumbstruck by certain things :lol Man why do Japanese suck at writing compelling stories* (or at least editing them). They have heavy issues with pacing as well.

Also. I wanted more Saberz =O!

*Not generalizing ;-)

Well the Saber route is covered by the Anime adaption, although that is a bit poorly compacted as well. Playing the PC version with the voice patch is the ideal way to experience F/SN, but UBW works for seeing some of the fights play out. The way the movie ended up was mostly DEENs fault since I'm sure it could have been done properly. Although I don't think you'd get the best experience unless it was an actual TV anime series.

The game is badass though!

Sorry. Watching R.O.D. The TV.

Evil British motherfuckers just upped the ante.

Based on this thread, R.O.D. sounds a lot like Toshokan Sensou. Although I figure if I bothered to look it up, I'd be proven wrong. :lol

Toshokan Sensou sounds a bit more seriously and sincerely about books. R.O.D. is just paper-bending madness :lol

Everything sounds the same to you.

K-On is this decade's Hajime no Ippo! Or was that Cross Game? :lol

You know, I can't say that was really about books either. I mean, there's censorship and the burning of books and whatnot, but it's all an excuse for some action bits and shoujo comedy.

Finally got a chance to sit down and watch the first episode of Kuragehime. I like the idea of seeing the otaku stereotypes from the female perspective, since I haven't had much exposure to such things. Was surprised to find out the one character is actually a cross dresser and not TG/TS (I knew the basics about him, but didn't know the exact details), but I think it'll be interesting to see what is done with him (since a lot of the "otokonoko" stuff I've had exposure to hasn't gone the CD route).

BUT... I'm not really a fan of the subs the group that did the version I saw put together. They keep using "hipster" when I really don't think they mean to be using that word most of the time.

Edit: I remembered wrong - they used "transvestite" and not "transsexual". That's still not the exact wording I would have used, but not the big disagreement I was originally thinking. They really should have gone in the direction of the main character asking if he was gay, as that would make more sense and better fit with the "okama" term she used.

I figure people invented otokonoko in order to avoid the connotations of okama anyway.

Also, that particular sub group is of the "localize to hell" variety, so... hipster is perfectly natural for them. (Speaking of which, they were shitting on ANN this week for some reason).

He has to fight her girlfriends to marry her!

I like both but i really think you should have watched the OVA first or finished it before continuing the TV series (if you haven't), too late now though.

Yep. I'm up to about Episode 20. Shit is getting startlingly real.

Hell yeah. Don't listen to the haters. The OVAs are great too.

The sub I saw used 'chic' most of the time, which seemed to work well. Was certainly in line with what I saw from the translated manga chapter.

Started Bakemonogatari. The episodes I watched (1, 2) were very good. Animation style (I guess this is the term for it? The weird angles, camera panning, stuff like that) is.. interesting.

One downside so far is that there seems to be a shit ton of fan service just in the first two episodes. :lol

If you thought that was bad, get to Nadeko's arc. :lol

Not that I can say for sure where otokonoko comes from, but I'm not sure that's the real reason. If it were a Western-born trend, I might say that could be where it would come from, but I don't know that Japan would have the concern over "OMG GAY" that would lead them to creating otokonoko from that.

If I might ask, do you know the name of the sub group that did the version you saw? I'm in no way an expert of the sub groups, so I just took the first chance I found to watch the show.

Truly a magnificent piece of literature. Viz actually published that over here as a part of Secret Comics Japan.
Well I do appreciate such neo-realist literature, I'll be sure to check it out.

Hey, those scenes are in there for very good reasons!

Vital to the plot, you might say.

Yeah, if you don't find the whole out of sorts alien thing funny then there's not much there.

I still think the ink gag is hilarious for some reason. She needs to vomit on something once every episode. :lol

ROD has people with super powers and shit, it's like the Giant Robo of Libraries, Toshokan Sensou's like the Starship Operators of Libraries, or maybe worse, haven't decided.

I guess otokonoko exists more for the people who fetishize or "enjoy" boys who dress like girls rather than the people themselves (at least, if my understanding of the manga and the otokonoko cafe is correct). Maybe that's a way the fans can sort of protect themselves from labels.

But this is where I'm totally out of my realm, unfortunately.

Oh son of a bitch. There must be a Zoidberg/Ika crossover. Someone needs to make that happen!

Hey, that panty-shot goes on a chronological timeline of events. Vital.

I have to admit I started watching Bakemonogatari as well, but not for the panty shots!
It was more due to your elaborate breakdown where you detailed Senjougahara's encounter with Araragi and quite frankly I was intrigued. I have only seen up to ep 12 as of today so I haven't finished Hanekawa's arc but it's quite the show. My only problem was I was unconsciously trying hard to analyze the scenes in each episode in the same fashion :lol .

Yeah, episode 12 is a very satisfying and delightfully sappy finale. And it's in SUPER WIDE SCREEN.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with the final few episodes. Apart from the fanservice OP.

Just wait till the little sisters arc get adapted! Then we can all feel uncomfortable.

Funny enough i don't have much interest in watching the last three episodes. But i'm going watch them soon, and the main reason is - i want it to be moved to the "complete" section of myanimelist.:lol

Finished R.O.D. The TV.

Hitokage is wrong. Show is great. Managed a brilliant tension between the vaguely harmless kinds of combat and the bluntly lethal sort - real bullets, slicing folks up, and so on.

I can't pick a favourite sister. Probably Anita. Sumiregawa was badass, too (same voice actress as Tanabe from Planetes).

While episode 12 does provide a nice sappy ending, it's kind of awkward to leave Hanekawa's situation unresolved. Isn't the title of the episode Hanekawa Tsubasa Story 2? And yet she doesn't even appear at all? I'm in for the same reason though, need to finish the story completely. Looking forward to Kizumonogatari.

Jexhius said:

It is good but a different kind of good, like it's not good for our age but I think it's a good kids show. That said, I won't really defend it because I don't want people thinking it's a must see or something deep or relevant to adult tastes, it's not, but sadly I think it's one of the better shows this season. I also think it's fairly easy to get these shows right, it's easy to do stupid comedy like that and when that's all you're trying for in the first place expectations are pretty low to begin with, which makes it sadder when a show can't manage that even.

God, anime achievements, although, in reality I really should get a trophy for completing Strike Witches or that Witch, Book and Traveler show(forget the title).
