My best comedic work this week was yesterday, even thoughit's still the same day for me, I can't be on fire 24/7 even I need to rest.

But that said, Asuka sucks! Nananana.

Don't kid yourself, it's always for the male audience.

Aoi Hana has no real clear demographic because the magazine the source material is serialized in, Manga Erotics F, just publishes whatever the fuck the editors want.

One minute you're reading super-sweet, relatively conflict-less fluff like Aoi Hana or Ristorante Paradiso and the next you're reading about brutal rape in Uncivilized Planet Survive or Bradherley's Coach. Good times.

No demographic = best demographic

It's for no one! whoever!

Not so good times.

Eh, while it may be wrong to treat such things as solid fact, most of the data I've seen with regard to males vs. females shows a fairly small gap. Often it's 55% male to 45% female, but if fluctuates.

And there's plenty of shoujo aimed at girls, and joesei is obviously even more so (even if not enough of that gets made into anime).

Girls don't buy shoujo, girls buy bromantic shows about insane pretty boys like Code Geass, Durarara or Sengoku Basara.

Is that the one made by Jiro Matsumoto? If so, I've read that, it's quite a good work, given the topics it covers.

I imagine they buy both, with a leaning towards bromance. But I was referring to manga in that case.

And there's no hard data either way. Which is lame. Where's my complicated age/sex breakdowns for every title damnit.

CrunchyRoll Has Natsume Yuujinchou, make sure you watch it! Also, Natsu No Arashi was good fun and worth a watch and Squid Girl from this season is decent. Erin is supposed to be good but God was it too slow for me, that's about all from their catalog I care for unless you wanna watch the first Bleach arc.

The ratings on Crunchyroll are absolutely abysmal, you can't trust them as the people rating that shit seem to like everything. Fucking weirdos just rate everything from Japan 4 stars and above, no matter what.

I am having so much trouble reading the subs because of my eye issues thats why I stopped watching anime for so many years. Tried one ep of Natsume Yuujinchou I think I've seen this ep before but could not get into it and not reading every word is hard to follow.

Unless I really like something pausing to read each sub is slow going :(

Watching the first ep of Erin now slower pacing may help with my issues, too much was going on in Natsume Yuujinchou seems good though thanks again

Let's be honest here, girls watch the same shows most guys watch: Bleach, Naruto, etc.

I bet the only shows where there are huge gaps between male and female audience are josei shows and shows with heavy yaoi elements.

Such a great magazine.

The outward appearance of heterosexuality (or asexuality) does not preclude the characters of Marimite from being closeted, deeply clueless, or perhaps both. Which I'm pretty sure they all are!
I believe the novel ends with them all in happy super-close relationships. And it's not like these girls haven't been exposed to homosexuality either after all.

Yeah, that was the story I quoted that got us down this random path of who buys Yuri. I would suppose it's why noitinimA shows about queer subjects don't tend to do that well after airing. :lol

I look at it this way though - it's very hard to find yaoi/shounen-ai that isn't about boys fucking each other's brains out and covering each other in "santorum" or other fluids. Yuri/shoujo-ai is fairly balanced - which is why only 6% of MariMite doujin is about the girls sexing each other up. I'm sure the other 94% is about how they're going to make tea or chocolates or some other relatively banal subject.

I thought most yaoi doujins are about guys acting sappy with each other and being all uncharacteristically romantic, even while they're having sex.

There is also the odd one with one of the girl getting everyone else raped by lots of guys.

Aoi Hana wasn't a NoitaminA show was it?

I think there are quite a few shounen-ai manga that are pretty respectable like Banana Fish and After Us, Savage God, but most of them are really old.

BTW is there a difference Shounen ai and Yaoi?

One is more explicit than the other, basically.

Setona Mizushiro's works are also pretty tasteful, be it totally shounen-ai or simply touching on the subject, at least based on what I've read of her stuff.

In sum:
Recommends
----
Opening, Ending, Epilogue
Cloud
Nightmare

Anti-Recommends
----
Deprive
Starlight Angel
The opening and ending are indeed awesome, but Presence is where it's at. It even explains all of modern anime fandom!

The important difference is people don't say Shounen ai anymore because adding more layers of classification to everything is generally pointless.

Oh no, you aren't going to try and EXPLAIN Miya are you? Please no!

Man, Osamu Dezaki's directing is so overladen with symbolism. Most modern direction doesn't even try :( An understanding of film form, especially awesome mise-en-scene, is always nice to see.

Oh right, it was on their now defunct "Noise" block... the even more obscure and arty version of noitinimA. :lol

I'd like to watch/read recent stuff - the fact that there's a MariMite spinoff about the boys school is interesting anyway, but it seems to be much harder to find.

I believe the "ai" vs yaoi distinction is largely an American one invented to distinguish between the various levels of pornographic content.

Shounen ai is usually mostly fluff and Yaoi is most definitely pornographic. Well in American understanding anyways.

If Angel's Egg didn't exist!

Angel's Egg is interesting and everything, but it really can't compete with the shining brilliance of Gozensosama Banbanzai.

The opening, ending, and final segments of Robot Carnival are soooooo fucked up. Otomo, you fucking asshole you, with your gratuitous fetish for explosions and weird-looking wrinkly people, combined so tragically and cruelly in this animu. Visually the coolest and most complex segment was Nightmare, even though the music was hopelessly 80s. Cloud, as an artsy little mood piece, is completely out of place with the rest of the collection, but it is beautifully done. The other shorts are pretty take it or leave it, except for the barf-worthy so-80s-it-hurts garbage.

No love for Franken's Gears?

I started watching this one heavily-yaoi undertoned vampire jdrama once.

One line was seriously: "How dare you scratch (guy's name) beautiful face!" And then he attacks someone because of it ~_~

I never saw Aoi Hana, but I did watch Sasameki Koto. I always assumed they were the same show. :\
There's an anime of that? I've just recently binged read many volumes of the manga.

Naw, they came right after each other so people naturally compared them. Sasameki Koto is a bit more "safe" in that it doesn't really address the issue head on and is probably a bit more male friendly.

And hey, it has an otokonoko too!

Oniisama...e 23 : Wherein we explain why Miya is an amazing BITCH.

Except, the answer we get in rather weak. I'd rather they'd never explain it at all, actually.

Considering her reaction to this event
Attempted suicide
and her much more recent in-show activity
Trying to drown Nanako
I'd expect something rather more traumatic.

Therefore, we are led to assume that perhaps she's just completely insane.

Some of the symbolism was not so subtle :

Whereas on other occasions, it was more complicated (the doll is Miya) :

The lake at their summer house looks like the kind of thing you'd see in WWI photographs :

Adorable child Miya is adorable (and insane) :

Yep, it was quite boring, it didn't really capture the atmosphere of the manga. It was way too slow too.

Aoi Hana was handled way better, even if the ending in the anime rubbed me wrong (and with no second season, it burns even more).

They should make an anime for Flower Flower now since that anime failed!

I'd totally watch it!

Then again, I'd also watch an anime for Konohana Link. If Shoujo Sect has had one, this can have one too!

You could read Copernicus no Kokyuu. There is nothing more classy than extremely graphic yet artsy gay clown sex. It even ran in the same magazine as Aoi Hana so it's obviously for the same target audience!

Anime update.

Cross Game 1 - That twist certainly came early. But it was a bit to sudden for me. Still so far based on the first episode, it seems to have all the qualities i love about adachi's work. Going watch the rest as soon as i finish Touch (manga).

Ore imo imouto 4 - Ayase is so adorable.<3 and SHEITTTT @ that cliff-hanger

Mono no aware 1 - Finally started this after all the praise. And it so far has this calming relaxed tone that i really like. The scene at the end where alica was talking about the married couple was particularly moving.;_;

Wait, there is actually an Anime called Mono no Aware? :lol

I know Genji Monogatari doesn't have anyone named "Alica" in it.

WHAT COULD IT BE?

Yeah they stuffed the entire first volume of the manga into the first episode. I made for a pretty strong first episode, but it kind of ruined the twist.

Gozensosama Banbanzai just sounds like regular pretentious-ass art student fluff, so I don't really believe you tbh 7th, because you like pretentious-ass artsy fluff, but maybe I will try to get around to it sometime this decade.

Gozensosama is unashamedly quirky and melodramatically self-aware; it doesn’t really take itself too seriously and thus never falls into the usual Oshii trappings. It’s also kind of the most visually engaging of all of Oshii’s works, even when pitted against Angel’s Egg or Ghost in the Shell; that more due to chief animator Satoru Utsunomiya than due to Oshii himself, though.
