The Spiral King backstory at the beginning might be one of my favorite scenes of any anime, period. Whoever directed it deserves a Nobel prize.

True, that was incredible.. with an art-style that was slightly different from the main anime I felt? I will have to re-watch it after I am finished, it was a bit too random for a complete noob to get.

This implies that you haven't seen the TV series.

That's right, started with the first movie... noticed it was basically the series-condensed, so when I get my hands on that I will watch it all.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru 10: Not too bad this week.

I can't believe that technically you could describe this show as "Comedy series about a clumsy girl who works at a maid cafe". :lol

Even though I don't have (much) against the movies I don't think I'd ever introduce anyone to the series through them largely because of the opening.

Shiki 9: You know, this village is really being held back by everyone's Lost-level inability to deliver salient plot information to each other.

If only they had twitter.

Star Driver 11

Not great, but good.

These are the types of episodes we should have had as #3 or #4. 11 episodes in, this quality is not really acceptable.

The first movie edited Parallel Works 8 (the original name of the backstory thing) a little bit, some transition scenes were cut out so it felt a lot more random.

Bad idea. You've spoiled one of the coolest reveals in part 2. You need to forget stuff before you start the series.

Caught A Certain Scientific Railgun last season, which I thought was awesome, just never got round to watching Magical Index.

Did that last week in the space of 2 days, and then I got up to ep 9 of the second season. And now the weekly breaks kill me, because the pacing is so awful per episode.

Anyone else watching?

You should go back and read some of Dresden's posts here. :lol

I liked Hotori's "derp" face in this episode.

Finally got around to finishing Working!!. I really enjoyed it a lot. The last episode was almost great, but I kinda wish
Takanashi and Inami had actually gone "official"
.

I hope this comes to the UK, but if it doesn't I'm buying that region 1 Premium edition with the artbook ^_^

If you can't tell from my avatar, I really love Inami!

What do I watch next GAF? Finish my Ouran DVD set or find something newer?

Like firehawk said, I can't think of any show that's quite like Working!! either. It should get another season : (

The claw was the best character.

You know, since I mentioned it, Natsu no Arashi would also be a good fit... and Ristorante Paradiso takes place in a restaurant! :lol

Arashi might be okay but it doesn't give off the same feeling as Working's cast.

Paradiso is great but is a totally different sort of restaurant :lol If we're just going with food/drink establishment anime let's go with Time of Eve as well. It's in a cafe. :D

Restaurant based anime recommendations are go.

There is MM with Inami 2.

MM! does have similar traits and some reprising VA roles as well.

Milky Holmes 10 -- And so Milky Holmes hit bottom. Complete failure -- they don't study at all but have fun instead, trusting that their Toys will return for the test. fail the test, they fail the post-test mission, and they finally get expelled. It's raining at the end in the expulsion scene, appropriately.

Most of the episode was pretty average, fun and entertaining but not exceptional. The failures in the tests were amusing, more impossible challenges for people without powers. :) The second challenge, from Arsene, went even worse and they were just useless (though Kokoro saving them was a nice touch, we all know you care...). Arsene seems angry that they didn't get their powers back, and I'm still wondering why she cares so much about them if they were enemies... I definitely was feeling badly for Milky Holmes in the end, and I wonder what happens next. Will they redeem themselves, or will it go for some kind of "we're happy as we are" thing? In the next few episodes we'll see. This is really the top thing I've been wondering through the whole show, and now we're just about to get to the point where we get an answer to that question.

I mean, they've been expelled now for their failure to get their Toys back. Something's got to happen, one of those options or the other.

Oh, and Kokoro's IQ is up to 1300 billion now, evidently. :lol

^
Presumably they triumph at the end? :lol

Also, Bakuman is still horrible in its blandness. Maybe it works as a manga because you can skip over the boring parts much faster. :p

Probably, but things sure aren't looking too bright right now. This far into the series they haven't had any success at getting their powers back for more than a moment, when in great danger...

Really enjoyed the show, mostly because it never became the kind of show I feared it was. Reminded me a bit of Kare Kano.

Yeah, I can see the Kare Kano comparisons, moreso than any other comparisons that come to mind in fact. The anime overall was just so good. It has well developed characters, some very memorable scenes, good music, nice animation, etc. The highlight of the anime was definitely the story though which mangaged to stay well paced and actually avoided having a uneventful middle or a non-ending.

Basically:

EDIT: You know an adaption has succeeded when replaying a song envokes the same emotion as the original scene.

And, Toradora was only good because of Ami.
Ami was pretty great but the cast overall was excellent. Even the hyper active Minorin ended up having depth and I'm actually hesitant at calling Taiga a tsundere at all thanks to how well developed her character is and becomes throughout the story.

Probably my favourite anime from 2009. It really was quality.
Its definitely one of the better animes I've seen. I actually want to kind of buy the DVD despite having already payed $14 to watch it. Too bad the only way to get it right now is a "premium" edition on NIS's website or Rightstuf.

Well, there are tsunderes who are just there to have a tsundere, and then there are tsunderes who actually have a well thought out reason for their personality.

I fucking hated Minorin but Taiga wasn't really a tsundere, at least not for the whole show.

People read Bakuman for its meta-ness and for its insights on how the manga world work. However an anime talking about manga is significantly less "meta" than a shonen jump manga talking about shonen jump. Also, Bakuman's main romance is complete garbage and is regularly jeered at and dreaded when it becomes the focus of a story arc. Still, the series is saved by its colorful cast of characters, most of whom have not even appeared yet.

DrForester said:

Sadly there are way too many of the former and way too few of the latter. At this point the trope is so abused that I'd argue that it should just be sacrificed to the former and the latter just be accepted as "characters" rather needing to be placed under a specific term. Tropes like that only work out on the most broad and simplified description after all.

DrForester said:
Saikano was great. Don't know what crazy person said otherwise.
I meant bad as in heavily depressing, guess the conversation just doesn't flow well a day later but it was mentioned in response to me recommending up beat anime, which clearly Saikano is not, but I still have a hard time believing it deserves the "oh my God this is so depressing and/or sad" comments it gets.

Katanagatari 12: Emonzaemon is definitely my favourite of the cast through this entire series.
Bro fulfilled nearly ever order he was given.
: (

I think I was mostly satisfied with how things ended up. The journey and build up to the start to end was pretty great although there was some shaky ground early on. It was worth the time to follow this year long series.

Jexhius said:
Historically it seems most anime seasons were never that short, it seems to be a recent trend. Unless I'm very much mistaken.

There's a missing middle ground of budgeting; mainstream shows can easily afford to be booked for 2-4 cours or even more while for niche stuff another cours of airtime alone would turn break-even into a huge bomb. And niche stuff is more likely to attract a fanbase that'll come back for a delayed S2 whereas mainstream needs to keep the gears turning.

My problem is that they're repeating the same shit over and over again. I think they get paid to use "name" in every episode. Also, yeah, the romance is stupid. :lol

There's only one edition of the DVDs. They say that once they sell out, they'll just reprint the DVDs without the book and presumably sell it for the same price.

I just wonder if they've replaced all the "retail" versions of the DVDs with the "better" reprints. They sent out replacement copies to everyone already - taking a huge bath, but earning lots of goodwill - but who knows what you get when you buy a new copy now?

Her and Railgun. Only two I can stomach out of hundreds.

It was my understanding that nothing in inventory was recalled so anything from now until they reprint it, if ever, will be the "lesser" DVDs.

Railgun is much better in her own show though.

Hrm, are they still letting people opt in and get replacement DVDs then? Pain in the ass, but if the option is still there, you can't complain too much I suppose.

I don't know. I found the blurb from RightStuf saying they weren't going to get a new box and that NISA had no plans to do a new set with the remasters, so you have to buy them then request the remastered discs but I don't know how long or if NISA is even still offering them.

It's really a kind of nasty situation, I think anyone purchasing should email the Nisa store and ask directly to ensure they're still available before purchasing, I'm not happy over how NISA decided not to replace the rest of the inventory, but they are or were nice about the replacement disks themselves since they were offered free of charge, even free shipping and you didn't have to send in your old discs.

If I were to guess, being that it's NISA I'd say they just got enough remastered discs for what they felt the demand would be and once they're gone, they're gone so people should probably move fast if they want that title and see if they're still available. I don't see them being available forever.

As a sidenote, the book NIS put in the Toradora box is very nice. There may have been a problem with some disks, which they fixed, but their packaging was very high quality.

I kinda wanted to order Pandora Hearts just for the book, I really liked the artwork for the show and I love the music but I'll just stick with my awesome soundtrack CDs, the actual show itself was terrible.

Their Toradora release made me want to pick up "Our Home's Fox Deity", which, kind of like Toradora end up being very different than you'd expect from the start.

Soredemo lost points again because of a lack of Kon in the second half, fix that shit Shaft! Get rid of the girl with glasses if you need to but make more room for her! Kon and Arashiyama make shit happen, everyone else just kind of suck and just go with the flow.

Also, I don't know what the fuck is happening but I'm starting to find Arashiyama sorta endearing. I don't have a fever so I'm not sure what's wrong with me.

Taiga's character work because she, to the shock and amazement of everyone, actually has a character arc. A real one in fact! I know, I don't believe it either but it's true.

I always thought there was nothing wrong with her voice, right on cue, and felt it fit her character. Anyways, at the start I kinda wanted to stab her in the eye with a pencil, then later I was indifferent to her character and now I'm like "fuck it, I'll tag along for the ride, it's gotta be better than what I'm doing now," by the next episode or two I might actually look forward to her character.

man you going through the tsundere character arc

By the way I'm actually rather excited about watching a Star Driver episode. It's the first time since episode two or so. Time to watch.

Right, one can argue whether it's a good one or not but it's there and it happens and you can watch it unfold, she changes in the show.

Why can't Shana or Louise do that? And to harp on Shana's character, she's what, over 50 years old or some crap, does she really need to still act like a 13 year old? How do these fools in these anime that are immortal or have extremely long lives remain so emotionally stunted over their longer than average lifespans?
