Fallout 3 Fan Q&A, new screenshots

The first shot is not the cleanest show I've seen and the textures aren't the best...but holy shit they got a great vision. The screen just *feels* right.

Here's hoping the game is fun for people that weren't exactly fans of the originals.I doubt they'd be able to do any of that in a 3D game. They managed to do it in the older games due to less rigorous screenings and the low-tech representations of the violence.

It was all sort of 'new' at that point, and the PC was kind of regarded as hands off as far as any sort of governing body was concerned.

Now that it's getting released on all platforms (that matter), it's going to have an intense spotlight on it.

They probably look across the proverbial street at Bioware and want none of the media backlash that they got over a very mild sex scene.

The preemptive austrailian ban already put a unwanted spotlight on F3. I'm more than certain Bethesda is much more apprehensive about releasing the Construction Set because what modders might bring in. That, and putting a damper on their damn DLC releases :(

Shouldn't be a problem if they release it like 1 or 2 months after the game is released and all the media buzz worn off.

Damn, I thought I was weird for being disappointed by the lack of weather effects too. I'll still be getting this game since I loved Oblivion but I wish there were weather effects in this game. The lack of snow was among one of my biggest disappointments with GTAIV. I guess I just have a thing for changing seasons in games.
Yeah, man. I gotta say, it's quite a strange omission. Especially considering storms and apocalyptic landscapes basically go hand in hand.

But, there are beards. And not just any beards. We have them all. We have the most ridiculous list of beards in any game, ever.

Sweet. Come for the beards, stay for the awesome. Beard hype+1

Why do they release 360 screenshots on the one hand and then Gamestop takes the 360 regular version down on the other?

STOP TOYING WITH US, BETHESDA.

:(

That's just a rumor right now, isn't it? Though I believe that Australian publisher had another game banned due to drug use as well, so it's not that unlikely...

The weather thing is kind of weird considering their work with Oblivion, there's no car like in Fallout 2 that you can restore for trunk space (but you might have a domicile of your own somewhere?), and then there's this:

In regards to essential NPCs, it works like Oblivion, in that when they "die" they get knocked "unconscious" and get up a little while later. It worked well in Oblivion, so we kept that system, as you can still attack everyone that you want, and get at least a small benefit (being able to avoid them while they are down). I will say that the number of essential characters is minute compared to Oblivion and we've gone to pretty big lengths to cover a lot of people's deaths, but sometimes that's just not possible.
I loathed this in Oblivion and am somewhat annoyed that they're bringing it back. I liked Morrowind's method in letting the player know that they had severed the threads of fate if they killed an important NPC. I'd rather have Fallout 3 tell me something like "The green glow in your head has forced you to do something terrible. You don't know what, but this wasn't something that you should have done.". It's going to be a Mature game, so why not go all the way? It's not like players won't have a save system to change their minds with anyway.

Still, interesting interview. Can't wait to play it. :D

Apparently, it was banned over the game's use of Morphine.

Was HL2 banned? I'm sure I've heard the suit saying it's administering morphine after a bad injury.

First one did. I actually don't recall the Suit on HL2 saying anything. Could be wrong though.

this game's looking gooooooooood.

when's it release again?

Baby proofing bullshit.

Yeah, damn the old games too in making the Overseer/Frank Horrigan invincible till the last minute of the games.
They were? I do know the Overseer insta-killed you if you attack V13 though. didn't know about Harrigan.

It hasn't even been rated yet it isn't banned. The only thing we ever heard was some random guys "friend" heard it was banned.

The Overseer is indeed invincible.

As for Horrigan, you see him once or twice during the game, though I think the second time it's in video in V13. I think what they did with Horrigan is actually worse than the Overseer, because when you meet up with him the first time in person you can't even fight him; it's like a cutscene.

I'm worried i'll be playing this game and thinking oblivion 2 instead of fallout 3

The person that did the Dark Brotherhood missions from Oblivion is in charge of all of that in this game.

thank fucking christ they're limiting your 'wanted level' to the area where you committed the crime. it was such bullshit in Oblivion how every guard in the game's world knew that you stole a single apple.

^ The Dark Brotherhood is amazing. I'm playing their missions off-and-on right now, I think I'm at
the second mission you get via drop-off points, after you've already finished with the original Sanctuary so I'm not sure how much more I have to do (hopefully a lot since things seem to really be heating up)
- but I've done quite a few missions through the Dark Brotherhood already. The vast majority have been a LOT of fun, probably the best I've experienced in the game thus far.

I bit on the Survival Edition, too. Just awesome, it's worth cutting a bit out of the gaming budget to splurge there.

Of course, but for greater than 90% of the earth's surface after nuclear war the radiation would not be intense enough to cause death. There would just be higher mutation rates in the genetic codes of anything exposed to radiation. Much of the earth would look the exact same as it does today unless it was close to ground zero, except there would be higher cases of birth defects and cancer.

you play games for reality?

Darn. No child killing.

But I'm not about to start a petition or say I'm not going to buy the game. This looks sweet.

Wretched scrolling in the skills interface.

God it's a fucking crime that this won't ship with a PC editor. No way to fix that shit.

No child killing or Nudity?

Completely disappointed. Could you imagine what it would be like with those aspects? Best game ever.

Still excited however.

FO never really had nudity. I mean if it did, it's not like you could have seen much.

Removing child killing is a cop out, but an expected one. What I did not expect was that their solution would be so unintentionally hilarious. If a kid takes a bullet, he what, shrugs it off and dashes off to the horizon like Speedy Gonzalez? Perfect.

Sounds like a lot of good decisions for the most part. I am cautiously optimistic for this game!

Oblivion was just sort of meh, so hopefully this will take it to the next level.

eh, let's hope the kid will run off sobbing and bleeding for realisms sake. At least where you actually feel bad for trying to murder a little one.

You will not be able to be a child killer. There are several reasons for this, some of them are very basic, like we wouldn't be able to sell the game, anywhere to anyone, if the children could be killed. I'm not using that as a scapegoat. We never wanted the game to offer any incentive or desire to be blowing kids away, so from our initial designs, we didn't know how we were going to handle if you shot them, we just knew it was going to be a big no-no, especially with a system like VATS and the graphic fidelity the gore has. Anyway, when attacked, all children flee and any regular NPCs friendly to the children will instantly attack you, so it feels good in the game, in that there is an appropriate response.

Geez why couldn't they have done this in Morrowind and Oblivion? It would have made the world feel more realistic to see parents with their kids wandering about instead of just a world of adults.

I'm pretty sure that neither of the previous Fallout games had any weather effects, just a day and night cycle.

MAN. I really loved traits. It made you feel like your character was an actual human being and not some sort of tabula rasa. Bah, Bethesda has no concept of role playing. Traits are an easy way of imparting some fun backstory.

This definetly isn't the game that the original Fallout designers would have made. Oh well.
