Fallout 4 - A Nuclear Disappointment

It's a great game wrapped in an average one, the exploration and modding is great, the companions are great. The radiant missions just annoyed me and the story
Institution ending for me too, not good
.

I liked the base building, once you got the hang of it, there was a lot of fun to be had.

I'm sorry but if you actually think industry 'moneyhats' are the reason for the scores, you kinda lost me from the get-go.

It's just people succumbing to internet hype and rose-tinted glasses during a review period, plus people are probably playing these games for completely different reasons than your own.
For many people, the apparent scale and the illusion of total freedom of these open-world bethesda games trumps all the warts, quirks and bugs that the games are riddled with.

It's sad, but it's true. It's refreshing to see somewhat of a backlash to this game right now because Bethesda isn't the sole player in the huge open-world RPG business anymore.
As of right now, they are getting downright embarrassed by some of their competitors.

Thank god there's developers like CDPR to move the triple A RPG genre forwards. Goodbye Bethesda, hope one day you become relevant again.
Relevant? Did you see the sales of this game?

This forum can shit on this game all you want. At the end of the day it's an RPG for people who don't really play RPGs (like me). A lot of people loved the game and it sold gangbusters.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it.

My biggest complaint is how rare I get the Sniper Elite-style bullet cam to the head when landing a killing headshot... and then how rarely their heads explode/disintegrate even with Bloody Mess (compared to New Vegas, anyway).

Fucking satisfying as hell watching their eyeballs take off in opposite directions in slow motion.

YOU HIT LIKE A RADROACH

Why is pretty much everyone who likes this game banned (first and second page)? What happened? I don't understand....

Fallout 4 was good. Bethesda still knows how to let you explore a great world. The writing was terrible though.
Because 3 letter responses add nothing to the topic at hand, ones that say "I liked It" when the topic tittle is Fallout 4 A Nuclear Dissapointment...

I can't believe how many positive reviews and great scores it received. I guess this definitely makes me a moneyhatting believer, though
I guess that the people that enjoyed it in NeoGaf are moneyhatted too.

It´s funny you approached a Bethesda game expecting a good story and good quest design. Because that has been a constant of Bethesda games, right?

Explore the (well built) world, do whatever you want, collect junk, enjoy the serviceable combat, mods... that's what the game is about and that's what people enjoy of it. Ranting about stuff that nobody sane expected to find there is a waste of time.

I don't understand why the people who loved Fallout 3 are suddenly so disappointed with Fallout 4. The two are similarly haphazardly put together games.
They are very similar. This is actually one of the biggest problems. You can't surprise people with the same shit 10 years later. AI is as stupid as ever, world is as flat as ever, dungeons as generic as ever (actually more generic, increasing in proportion to number). Really doesn't help the conversation system is a joke now, they even recycled Liberty Prime and there is no equivalent to Little Lamplight, Tranquility Lane, Oasis and so on. Fallout 3 also didn't have this whole Institute nonsense, or barely.

More or less the same reason I don't like GTA V that much. GTA III, VC and SA weren't that amazing because they were legitimately good games with good game design. They were that amazing because they blew us away with something we haven't seen before. You can't do this five times in a row without some really, really big improvements or providing something that achieves a similar "not seen before" effect. I'm still hoping for fleshed out Bully seasons for a GTA one day.

I'm sorry but if you actually think industry 'moneyhats' are the reason for the scores, you kinda lost me from the get-go.
Either that or I have to believe something I refuse to believe because I'd probably die old and lonely accepting this reality.

Hype is a good argument but you can't be hyped enough to ignore all this shit I mentioned before scoring it unless you haven't even finished it in the first place. The performance, the glitches, the loading times, the unnecessary long animations you can't skip, the bad economy system, the forced Sims mechanics, the generic 30-40 somewhat factories, how you are forced to shoot and kill your way through the game, the butchered conversation system, the terrible story, the recycled music, assets, story, Prime, all the other stuff I mentioned and way, way more.

I can tell you who was hyped. I was hyped.

First line is unnecessary hyperbole, but you have some good points. Fallout 4 is a fun game but at the same time a huge disappointment after New Vegas (for me personally). It feels like they dropped anything RPG related because it could be confusing or would force people to make hard decisions sometimes. Basically a typical AAA blockbuster like Call of Duty and no meaningul RPG.

Fallout 4 is a great game, and the hate parade for it is getting ridiculous
It's like you've never played a Bethesda game

Nobody knocks Platinum games for subpar stories and worldbuilding when what they really excel at works well. Just like Bethesda's immersive aspects, exploration, and gunplay work great here, even if it comes with a nice side of jank

Too much hyperbole. You come across as literally screaming at the clouds which is a horrible place to start a discussion. Worst off, I know you must have seen this same thread yesterday, but you obviously felt you rant was too important to not start a new thread for. Come on bro.

The game has issues, but you need to realize you are in the minority when it comes to the opinion that the game is awful. Moneyhats for it being the sole reason it scored well is some truely conspiracy theory nutjob shit.

YOU didn't like a thing, there for what the fuck is wrong with the industry? Bruh.

Doesnt mean we should except it offcourse because its Bethesda. Love their games but it can be even better if their games would be more polished and abit changed.. And we should pressure that as a community.

My first Fallout game after hearing such great things. I got to the point of "no return", made a save then went back after each ending.

All the endings were very weak and I didn't really like any of them. After i've not gone back to the game even though I have loads left to do and explore. I put around 60-65 hours if I had to guess.

It's an average RPG, and a sub average shooter.

Most of the users who posted similar comments got banned in the other thread in case you didn't know. From the other thread:
If you disagree with the OP, try to actually elucidate WHY. Posting merely "I enjoyed it" or something like that is pointless white noise at best, and a passive aggressive attempt to drown out criticism at worst. Stop.
On topic: I agree with many points made by the OP. But i won't call it a turd coz i had fun. I also would never say it is a 9+/10 game deserving critical acclaim. Then again the reason i don't hate it as much as the OP is coz i this is my first Fallout game.

i read your entire post. Hardest ive laughed in a week!

It was probably the element of this game that made me waste the most time on watching loading screens while questioning my whole life and my stupid hobby.
i think FO4 has entered Dragon Age 2 territory for me now. im almost curious to play the game now just to see how bad it is.

It wasn't turd it was just mediocre as fuck. The game got boring quick, and half way through I felt that I had already explored the whole map. Also engine is turd etc.

How did The Witcher move RPGs forward? It's combat and upgrade system and inventory are definitely not steps in the right direction.
The Witcher III has a number of problems but I can honestly say it's the best open-world western RPG I have personally played. It's such a big step over the past few Behtesda games, at least in my opinion.

I though this was a gaming and not a business forum. From a gaming perspective I don't think this game is relevant for the RPG genre.

Interesting story, well written characters, moral choices that actually make you think about what's right or wrong, an open world that feels alive, one of the best ways of handling side quests in the genre... should I go on?

Yeah cause sales and the business side of the industry is never discussed on here right?

It's an RPG. It may not be a great RPG in some people's eyes and that's fair enough, but it is an RPG. And it's the biggest RPG there is right now.

that title and first line

you could have posted in here though ?

That was what I was thinking.

I think the game isn't so bad. I had a good amount of fun with it. The main game loop of combat, exploration, loot and modding weapons felt very addictive, and the world is very well done (not the lore, I mean in the physical sense). That said, the game is an important step backwards in RPG.

You quite quickly handwave my criticism of Witcher 3, but I can play Fallout 4 without ever using melee, unarmed, rifles, energy weapons, heavy weapons, explosives. I can also mix all those up in whatever way I want. I can sneak through the entire game or go in guns blazing wearing power armour. So respectively we are gonna have to agree to disagree on player build variety comparing Fallout to Witcher. The disappointing aspect for me was the lack of variety in player build in Fallout with regards to story and character type outside of combat, in combat I think the game provides a great deal of choices.

I honestly haven't seen any enemies committing suicide with explosives in my playthroughs and I honestly don't understand glitches with cover as you describe. In terms of improvement over 3 or New Vegas there are marked improvements, I'm not saying the game has exceptional AI, I'm just saying it's obvious that it is much better
Okay, not being mean, but how in the hell does one sneak through the entire game?

You need high level perks to even remotely do a form of sneaking. The problem is, once you hit one person, they all converge on you. And because enemies move while in VATS, things reach you faster.

For example, you are in a dungeon, and there are three people in front of you. Your first few shots take out one guy, so you get the damage bonus on that, but you are out of AP and thus have to fight straight up OR run away and then come back.

There's no flashbangs as far as I can tell to get them off your tail. You can lay mines, but that still attracts people, thus losing your bonus. So I guess you could play stealthy if you feel like running back and forth all day. For some reason, stealth was easier in the previous games, because the AI wasn't so omnipresent.

So maybe you could, if you felt like going through battles of attrition, and have enough stocked up items to circumvent the game's systems that fight against you, but that feels like less fun.

It's a good game (I'd give it a 7/7.5) but a bad RPG.

This "fallout 4 sux" circlejerk is as bad as the "bethesda is goat" one though. If you're looking for a good rpg with good quests and deep rpg mechanics, you should've never bought a Bethesda game, because they stopped doing those many years ago. Fallout 4 is just as bad as Skyrim and Fallout 3, but luckily this year there was a good RPG as competition and people is realizing how shallow Bethesda's games are.

I agree, it's no surprise the developer who made oblivion, fallout3 and skyrim would release a game like fallout 4. Bethesda makes low tier RPGs since oblivion.

I never found the enemies to be bullet sponges expect when I was low level and had wandered in to a high enemy area.
Invest in the weapon perks and weapon upgrade perks and you'll be plowing through everyone in no time.
I was, well in VATS at least.

It's a terrible RPG, but it's not really that bad a game. It's just mediocre shooter for the most part.

e: I actually feel that it being a shooter with RPG elements rather than an RPG with guns (like the earlier ones were) is my biggest problem with it (who expected anything good writing, story or dialogue wise from a Bethesda game anyway). Swear to god I seem to enjoy 3 and NV's combat more, leveling up feels like it actually matters.

It's the worst AAA game in a long time talking about production values. From the assets to animations to ui, there is a lot of jank and irregularity on the quality.

Game design and story wise, while it has its moments, it's also not good enough imo.

My problem was that they learned absolutely nothing from New Vegas. The faction system in Fallout 4 sucks, there is no companion wheel, the dialog sucks, the blank slate is gone, the story is meaningless.
