Fallout 4 v. Witcher 3: Which Did You Prefer?

Now that Fallout 4 has been released for over a month, I'm really interested in a discussion/comparison of these two massive 2015 RPGs.

Which one did you like better: Fallout 4 or Witcher 3?

I have a pretty strong opinion that I'll share later, but I don't want to steer the discussion from the start. Please only comment if you have played both games.

Some categories to compare:
- Main story quests
- Side quests
- Quality of writing
- Characters
- RPG mechanics
- Combat
- World/exploration
- Graphics

Please always be respectful when stating your opinion!

But Fallout 4. But I actually think Witcher 3 is the better game. Does that make sense? You asked what I preferred after all.

Witcher 3 by a light century ?

Better art design, better quests, better battle system, better character design and characterization, better systems surrounding the gameplay, better exploration and world design etc.

They're both open world rpgs I guess.

Easy choice though Witcher 3. The narrative had undeniable issues with pacing, but it is still a very interesting world with extremely strong characters driving the plot. Some of the side quests in the Witcher 3 are arguably some of the best sidequests in many RPGs, and one the Bloody Baron story quest just trounces anything Fallout 4 brought to the table.

Fallout 4 had more of a sense of exploration and an arguably denser world map, but side quests felt hollow, the characters were disappointing, the story was a joke, and you could easily break the game to the point even the hardest difficulty was easy.

Better combat is entirely up to the beholder I guess. I know Witcher 3 gets a lot of crap for the combat, but I would take that melee system over Bethesda's anyday.

It's a case of picking your poison here. TW3 has pretty bad gameplay and fallout 4 has pretty bad quests and story line in comparison to TW3. Both have technical issues but fallout 4 has pretty bad graphics on top of that. In my personal opinion, it's best if you steer clear of both.

I preferred the story and world in TW3, but Fallout 4's open world captured my interest more in terms of just wandering around and playing the game.

It depends on my mood, really. I think I like TW3 more overall because I put a lot of weight in story and atmosphere and whatnot, but despite being incredibly badly written FO4 was a vast improvement gameplay-wise for Bethesda. Shrug.

The Witcher 3 for sure. Better characters, story, world, visuals, etc.
Fallout 4 is a sandbox game though, Witcher isn't, so if you like that kind of stuff then you may prefer Fallout.

Got 100+ hours out of both. If I had to pick one I would go with F4, the modding community will do wonderful things and give me reason to play again at some point in the future.

Witcher 3 has the better graphics/art, plot, and writing
Fallout 4 is more immersive, and plays better.

I think I prefer FO4, even after clocking 115 hours into Witcher 3 and 60 into FO4

Fallout 4 easily despite it's flaws it's still the ultimate exploring, laughing, crazy, wow adventure. That first behemoth or hit vats and see albino uh oh...

Skeletons who died on the shitter, some embraced in a sad moment, funny terminal logs, weird notes, quirky dialogue. It all adds up.

And then just ignore most of the story and go to town

Witcher starts good then you realize no fight is worth doing, you can stand within ten feet of an enemy and he'll just look at you. You could literally just shoot your crossbow for a half hour if you wanted. Your character gets hung up on the environment, horse sucks ass, it's just tedious and rushing through the story by the end.
Story is OK though, mostly predictable. Gwent was awesome.

Basically they are polar opposites but I prefer exploration and general mayhem so Fo4 for me.

Fallout 4.

Witcher 3 is a much more superior game but Fallout is my favourite fictional world and the Witcher is just generic fantasy to me.

I love both. Fallout 4 is a world where I look around and want to explore. Also despite the "dumbed" down leveling, Fallout's 4 perk system is way more rewarding than TE3's skill system.

Bad animations killed my immersion in Fallout 4 every time. Ragdoll npc, bad facial animation, out of sync audio in conversations, etc. Not to mention the bugs.
Witcher 3 has better immersion by far, imho.

Fallout 4.

I know the medieval times/middle earth/whatever has been a common setting for video games ever since Adventure on the 2600, but I can't stand that shit. I love the setting, lore, and technology of the Fallout universe and the game play opportunities that opens it up to.

C'mon between the Bloodsouls series, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed and everything else it's refreshing to have a game that doesn't have to feel like a fuckin' Renaissance Fair.

i feel like i was playing a different game than everybody else when it comes to W3. i just can't get into it for anything. i guess it comes down to preferences, the world and lore just never really gripped me in the first two games either. not to mention the gameplay which i didn't find particularly enthralling

fallout was a letdown but still i plugged about a hundred of hours into it and will probably spend hundreds more.

i dunno... end of the day they're both very different games. one's a bethesda open world, the other's more akin to a rockstar open world and heavy on cinematic presentation. i understand why they're compared but it's apples and oranges

Witcher 3 by like a million century years.. I still remember the Barron quest like it was yesterday... I don't remember a single quest line from f4

Witcher 3 for sure.

I felt much more involved in the world than with Fallout. Witcher exceeding it's history with Fallout being overshadowed by it certainly doesn't help.

Witcher 3 is better in most categories except Combat and RPG mechanics in my opinion.

Witcher 3 I actively started to avoid combat after 10 hours. Its boring, and has floaty controls. The oil/poison system was an absolute chore to use, menu navigation didn't help this. Weapon/Armor upgrade was also a chore. If you wanted the best armor you had to level and upgrade a single set. If you wanted to try something new and use a different set, it required you to devote significant time into it.

That lead to stat progression feeling very slow, and yet annoyingly required.

I had more fun playing Fallout 4. But I admit The Witcher 3 is likely objectively the better game.

That being said, Fallout 4's combat and environment captured my interest much more than The Witcher 3 did. Fallout 4 has a lot of faults, but it still has something that other games do not. It's very immersive.

EDIT: To clarify, I found myself wanting to explore the world in Fallout 4 much, much more than in The Witcher 3, which I felt like I just wanted to move the plot forward. Which of course, the open world felt like a hindrance on, at least for me.

The quests in Witcher 3 were better. I'm not feeling Fallout 4 but it has this thing where you just have to collect all the junk you find that is mainly for settlements and nothing else which really does nothing for you but will takes some time. (looking under counter tops, behind fridges, aiming at shelves looking for junk...)

uh...wut? lol

but I have a question. do you feel by the criteria that OP posted, fallout 4 is better?

Witcher 3 pretty easily for me as well.

The simplification of dialogue and having only linear ways to complete a quest in FO4 really hamper the game's value. I still prefer FO: NV over FO4.

This is a very strange opinion. Everything else about TW3 more than makes it worth it. TW3 is beautiful and well-written, with great characters and the gameplay actually isn't THAT bad. You're steering people away from an excellent game. :P

The Witcher 3 became one of my favourite games ever. Fallout 4 couldn't crack my top 5 of this year. I enjoyed Fallout, but it's more of the same from Bethesda. Nothing about it really impressed me that much.

Makes perfect sense. My favourite game of all time is Vagrant Story, closely followed by The Witcher 3, and yet it's always The Elder Scrolls games that I sink the most time into and keep going back to. Thousands of hours sunk into that series, because of its replayability, yet Vagrant Story was a pitch perfect experience for the entire (much shorter) duration.

On topic, The Witcher 3 was better than Fallout 4 in my opinion. But when FO4's Settlement system comes to TES6 Redguard I won't be leaving my house for weeks.

Fallout 4 is a good game. The Witcher 3 is an incredible game. There is really no aspect of Fallout 4 that I prefer over the Witcher. A lot of that is just personal preference though (obviously).

I haven't played Fallout 4 but I've recently started playing TW3.

All I can say is it has vastly elevated my standards for open world RPGGS's by a metric ton.

Narrative, characters, quest design, art direction, graphics are all incredible.
Combat is also damn good/fun and really strategic even if a little finicky, so I was surprised by the amount of gaf back lash against it.

And man, I just finished the Bloody Baron quest last night and holy shit :o

Witcher 3. I can get lost in that world so easily compared to the world in fallou 4. Maybe its the similarities between lord of the rings and game of thrones that attracts me more. I just find the world in fallout 4 depressing.

Probably the Witcher 3 for me personally.

I concede that the gameplay mechanics could be stronger (mainly combat), I found the characters and story much more engaging (and the lore more interesting), which motivated me to see the game through to it's conclusion.

While I've had fun aimlessly puttering around in Fallout 4 to see new set piece locations, my interest is dimming rapidly now that I've explored the majority of the map and the game's weak overall story arc doesn't inspire me to continue.

The gameplay is terrible. The horse is trash, the combat is just bad, and the only fun gameplay element in this game is Gwent. It is honestly criminal that this game won game of the year. How goty can be given to a game with such bad gameplay, it's unbelievable.

Look, I purchased the game at launch and played it for quite a bit and i thought the gameplay was bad so I sold it. I purchased it again during week 1 of the pan Christmas sale and the gameplay is still bad.

The Witcher 3, and it's not even close.

The gameplay of the Witcher 3 is objectively not terrible, you can absolutely not like it though
