Fallout 4's voice actors revealed

giphy.gif

I'll admit that this was my reaction.

What happened with Ron Pearlman? It wouldn't be right to have a Fallout epilogue without him.

So, are they going to spend their VO budget on actual voice directing this time instead of big name actors phoning it in?

that salesman in the e3 gameplay vid voiced like every elderly character in 3 and NV.

Hope Liam o'brien is back in it aswell

once todd revealed how much spoken dialogue there actually is from the main character i knew it wouldn't be troy, considering his schedule

after all the troy-centric games i played the past two years i dunno if i could've stomached a 50-100+ hour game with him

I was dreading the rumors of a fully voiced protagonist and repercussions that would have throughout the game, and judging from the demo they've show thus far, they are severe.

They somehow managed to take the awful dialogue wheel concept and simplify it even further, with a maximum of four options, and what appears to be 1-3 words per choice. In an interview with Geoff Keighley, Todd Howard even explained that the dialogue system was a direct result of focus-testing feedback; not wanting to repeat the chosen line in audio after reading it. It's not even clear whether skill checks in dialogue are even a thing anymore. I'll try to keep an open mind on what they show at E3 and up until release, but this isn't very reassuring for Fallout as an RPG.

a) Eh probably not....

b) Even the best voice actors would probably struggle with Bethesa's scripts. Blood from a stone and all that.

Courtenay sounds pretty great from what we've heard of her so far in FO4. Definitely think I'll roll as the wife my first go around. Always loved Jack in ME so that's a plus.

Those aren't the responses in their entirety. The actual dialogue after a choice is made is much longer than what's shown on the wheel.

I know, I'm not criticizing what the PC says (although it's likely full voice acting has had an effect on quality of writing, but you can't draw any conclusions this early), but the dialogue system.

It's still too early to really say much on the dialogue system. This is a good analysis from reddit.

The dialogue wheels we've seen so far have been arranged as follows:

A: Good morning - Sounds great - You're still here - I feel fine - Get food - Let's go
B: Not Interested - Go Away - Everything's Dead - Answer me - No food - You're a Mutt
X: Go on - I'm Busy - This isn't happening - That's Impossible - I don't know - You're Okay
Y: Vault-tec? - Enough Space? - What happened? - 200 Years? - You Okay? - Owner?

I see a pattern:
  • A Button always results in a kind / positive leaning statement.
  • B Button always results in an aggressive / negative leaning statement.
  • X Button always results in a neutral statement.
  • Y Button is always a question or a request for clarification.
EDIT: /u/cory975 added an interesting point: On an Xbox controller...
  • A is green (go/good/positive)
  • B is red (stop/bad/aggressive)
  • X is blue (calm/neutral/passive)
  • Y is yellow (caution)
So there's a color key, just not for PC/Keyboard people.

This is pretty stock for this kind of dialogue wheel esq system. And really isn't at all different in content from 90% of FO3 and NV dialogues where you generally had a kind/benevolent response, a neutral response and an aggressive/mean response with then an inquisitive response to bring up more questions.

We still don't know what the yellow text on that "You Okay?" Y button response means during that convo with Codsworth. That could have been a skill check or it could signify that it's not just a direct question with a single answer, but an opening question that would then bring up new dialogue options to ask further questions that you could ask before bringing you back to the original direct responses about food.

when is video games going to step up to getting good voice directors? 2015 and video game VA is still cringe worthy.

It's not usually the actors but the scripts and the implementation of the audio (weird pauses, etc). Some studios like Naughty Dog and MachineGames (Wolfenstein New Order) have done it very well lately but most, especially big RPGs, don't have the resources to nail the timing and cadence of every individual line of dialogue.

Of course this is Bethesda, infamous for their abysmal dialogue and voice acting, so standards are probably even lower. Though it seems like they're trying a BIT harder on this one.

Thank fuck no Troy Baker in sight.

It's getting incredibly irksome and tiresome that every other game seem to require him to VA their main characters.

Dude needs a vacation.

As petty as this sounds, if they had cast that dude , i would have skipped this entry.
