Fallout is free on GOG (until April 7th)

Agreed. Sure, Fallout 3 isn't as good as 1 or 2 but the alternative was no fallout at all and 3 did a good job at creating the world in 1st person. Without Bethesda New Vegas wouldn't exist and that is imo as good as Fallout 1 and 2, especially with the added dlc arc.
I disagree Fallout 3 is at least as good as New Vegas actually I would say all the fallout games are pretty much equal.

One of the many who started with Fallout 3. Curious what the hell this game is as I really have no clue.

What button do I push to go into first person mode?

Don't know if this is the thread for it or not, but for some reason the game doesn't launch right with 1680x1050 with 16bit colors, works fine with 1680x1050 and 8bit colors. Am I just missing something here?

Also, probably the more important question, when playing at 1680x1050, does the mouse studder for a specific reason? It seems to work at default resolution fine, but any other resolution the mouse acts weird.

Fallout 3 feels like a comicbook version of the fallout series. All games have their fair share of silliness but the other games balances it with really good themes and writing which sadly Fallout 3 lacked. It's still a good games and well worth playing but it has nowhere near the depth of the other games.

lol im already stuck, HEEELP

Right after getting out of the Vault 13 cave I chose to go to a desert and there is nothing to do here, no way to get out and only a bag with some fruit to pick up, other than that its just a desert, how do I get out?

I politely disagree with some of that statement. Fallout New Vegas has a better pace and better scenarios than FO3 (outside of a handful of scenarios, including Megaton).

Created a GOG account just for this. See how they hooked me so easy?

Wanted to play it for a while. Friends at University in the early 2000's went on about FO1 and 2 all the time and I was always curious....then FO3 came out and the franchise went supernova.

Now I can see what the fuss is about*.

*Fallout 3 and New Vegas are currently sealed on a shelf in the backlog too, lol.

That pissed you off that much? It was in poor taste but once they did those insane videos with dudes in cloaks I was back in.
Yes. They clearly thought lying to their customers and messing around with their accounts was something to be taken lightly. I'm still not sure whether I'd buy games from them again.

To exit from a desert map, just get to the edge of the screen. There should be different colored tiles; walk on them and you're on your way.

Once outside V13, the "usual" route has you trying to reach Vault 15, which is listed in your map menu on the right.

Thanks for trying to help but im stuck in the
desert, when i open the map menu there is nothing, just the black screen, there are no options for visiting other locales and the desert doesnt have any exits, should i just start a new save?

Ah, then it's a problem maybe?
Wait... I'll elaborate.

EDIT: If you click on the map button it only shows you the local map, not the world map. You have to go to the edge of the screen with your character and you will return to the world map.
"The edge" = the part with a different color (reddish, IIRC). It can be pretty far from where you appear, but if you scroll around you'll find it, eventually.

Just finished downloading. Gonna try it out for an hour or so.

My only exposure to the franchise was Fallout New Vegas on PS3 but I never played it too much cause it kept freezing on me.

LOL, so easy, thanks man!!!!!

The thing I love most about the game is the atmosphere. It's remarkable even today. Also, the game's visuals still look great thanks to FANTASTIC art direction.

Haha so much customization in the beginning. Made a sneaky intelligent weakling.

And holy shit the opening was fantastic. Moody, straight to the point and well written. Just goes to show you that you can create good atmosphere with any specs really. Fallout 3 had no emotional impact on me on any level. I already care more about my character and I'm 15 minutes in :D

I started playing it.... and I'm in awe. Fallout was my first RPG and it somehow cemented what I expect from an ideal RPG.

IT'S MINDBLOWING. I'm sure that's nostalgia speaking in me but this intro... then the vault intro. The first cave with rats and this creepy music which reminds me about "Escape from New York". There is something in this game which I completely forgot.

I know what I'm doing this weekend....

Installing now. :)

Hopefully the patching/modding process is smooth, all I really care about is proper resolution scaling, but it looks like one of the mods lets you kill kids so I'll definitely need that. I love WRPG's but when Fallout came out I was just a stupid kid who only played games on Nintendo 64, so I'm pretty excited to experience it for the first time.

By the way, the writing and voice acting are both top-notch. Some very memorable material.

My only real issues with the game were the pacing (beginning was a bit slow), the boring followers, the rather uninspired combat, and the useless skills (everything besides Lockpick, Steal, and Science pretty much).

While those seem like a lot of cons, they're really not in the scope of the game. The atmosphere and writing and minimalist approach to the story make you forget about some of the game's shortcomings.

The visual design on the polygonal characters who have the close-ups in conversations are amazing, too.

Tim Cain said they had intended to do that far more, but it was simply lack of resources that resulted in the relative few in the game. It took them a long time to do even just one.

He mentions that in this talk, which everyone should watch:

His Fallout post-mortem at GDC 2012.

I don't think there are actually any serious spoilers in it.

A big thanks to the OP for the heads up!

I now have a GOG account, with a bunch of games, and I didn't spend any money. That counts as a win I think!

Are any of the other free games they give you when you join any good?

Downloaded this but I'm wondering how powerful computer you should have to run this the the high-res mods?

I have Windows XP,
3GB RAM,
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
ATI Radeon HD 3450

Are those specs enough?

I want this thread to be the official LTTP for everyone playing Fallout for the first time. I love reading impressions, so keep 'em coming!

Fallout FIXT isn't booting for me, it says I need a CD, which I obviously do not have.

I can't even get that far. I downloaded Fallout FIXT Alpha 4 patch 1, but when I try to install the Windows Batch File contained in the folder, nothing seems to happen. I made sure to start a new game before attempted to install the path, but that didn't help. I'm not very good at this, lol. Oh well, I'll keep on trying.

Hasn't this aged rather poorly? Or is worth checking out?

Nah, be a real winner and reward them with some sales.

DL it in the BG, then see for yourself, for me any RPG that focuses on place, story, decisions and people is worth a look.

They should be identical (that is to say, perfect after modding), both versions you'd probably want to use the high res patch to play in a widescreen resolution at the very least. Nothing wrong with just playing it as it is either, but a good number of the bugs can be patched out if you want to. I have links to instructions and the common patches here.

BTW, thank you for all your GOG related posts over the past 2-3 years. It has been a very appreciated helpful way for me to quickly find info. Great job.

My first time returning to gog since their 'lol we shut down' joke.

I do like gog's website and account system. I am looking forward to seeing what they do for indies.

Check out all the titles they have added since that screw up and relaunch a year and half ago. They really expanded their library with some fantastic games.
