1. Final Fantasy X (2001) Yay for linear movie games.
3. Dragon Quest III (1988) Nice.
6. Final Fantasy IV (1991) How is this above FFVI and IX? It's a good game, but top six material?
7. Tactics Ogre (1995) Good taste here.
14. Dragn Quest IV (1990) Cheers.
25. Final Fantasy VI(1994) Definitely shouldn't be so low.
28. Chrono Trigger (1995) See Final Fantasy VI.
33. Resident Evil (1996) RE1 over RE2 and RE4?
35. F-Zero (1990) F-Zero, but no F-Zero GX or at least X? Considering this and Resident Evil 1, I call bias in favor of a series' first game. With F-Zero, the original is inferior to its sequels in approximately every way...
37. Mother 2 (1994) Good.
43. Animal Crossing (DS) 2005 Okay, yeah.
51. Pokemon Red and Green (1996) Odd how it's a best-selling franchise, well within/above the FF/DQ leagues, yet on a top 100 list it's way down here while FF/DQ dominate the top 25.
60. Final Fantasy II (1988) Shouldn't even be on here.
84. Final Fantasy Tactics (1997) Could be higher.
96. Tetris (Gameboy) (1989) Far too low.
97. Secret of Mana (1993) Also too low, to a lesser extent.
99. Super Mario Bros III (1988) ...Yeah.
And I see no Tales of Symphonia. Although maybe that has to do with low GC sales in Japan, considering that Wind Waker and RE4 are the only GC games I saw here.

This list is way worse than anything Gamefaqs, the very bottom of the videogame community barrel, has ever produced, so I doubt it.

57. Tales of Eternia (2000)
79. Tales of Destiny (1997)
89. Tales of Destiny II (2002)
92. Tales of Rebirth (2004)

Nice showing for the Tales series, although Rebirth, being my favorite, should be higher (Though Abyss would be my second, so it's ok)

It's like me and whoever reads Famitsu are perfectly in sync.

That list is great! I would change a couple things, like knocking down FFX a couple spots and bumping Xenogears and adding Suikoden II. In general though, awesome!

this list is shit because is like they were "lets include as many RPGs as we can" and even so, they miss a lot of RPGs which are a great.

also KH is in it but no Devil May Cry? No Megaman no Metroid yet every fucking FF made it to the list? bullshit. fuck Famitsu readers they are the same as the magazine.

4. Dragon Quest VIII (2004)
5. SMB 3
6. Final Fantasy VI
7. Final Fantasy Tactics
8. Final Fantasy III (1990)
9. Dragon Quest VII (2000)
10. Legend of Zelda 3

My approx. list, but not far off. Damn they sure do have good tastes in Japan.

Seriously though, this is why Square Enix can get away with not really being a multi-platform company.

GameFAQs > Famitsu :lol

It's still amazing to me though that Wizardry is for some reason really popular in Japan. In the US, Wizardry was always second-fiddle to the Ultima series as far as 80's/90's PC RPGs went, and that's a pretty niche market as it as. The franchise died back in 2001 with Wizardry 8 in the US, I don't even think Sir-Tech is in business anymore and I don't have a clue who owns the franchise, but there are dozens of spinoffs being released all the time in Japan. It's weird.

Sorry, but no way in hell. This is probably the worst list I've ever read. As said, something coming from EGM would actually have variety. This is disgustingly narrow.

- Sakura taisen appears (as for 4, it's a game for fans, short, but still I'm not surprised fans, including me, liked it)

That's funny because as for 4, I'm not surprised fans, including me, hate it.

Glad to see ST1 & 3 get their proper respect though. Phenomenal games.

Rather bad list, but it would be much better than if it was an Amerikaan list, as Borys pointed out. So...Japan ftw I guess.

And glad to see Ocarina made it in the top 10. :)

It's clear that the current famitsu readers are from the PlayStation era.

NES should have had a lot more games there.

And yeah...FFX sucks. What in the world...

Dude, nearly half of that list is S/NES titles. The only shooter on it is NES Gradius. If anything there might be a few NES titles already on it that don't belong, i.e. Kung Fu.

What are you talking about? Final fantasy is one of the best series around.

Final Fantasy is a decent JRPG series but the best game game ever? Thats a joke. Just about any American list would be better than this. I dont care for Madden but at least it's a deep game with practically endless replayabilty...and without the idiotic story to boot too.

At the Japanese version of GAF, do you think the posters are all like "Yeah, awesome list!" or are they like "WTF? Where are Madden and GTAIII? Japanese taste in videogames FTL"?

Every Top XXX list is broken is Zelda OOT and Mario 64 are in the top 5 if not top 2!!!!

At least most Western charts have the decency to uphold these laws.

You know, Japanese gamers have different tastes, and I respect that, but what the fuck.

Final Fantasy isn't that good. How many of Famitsu's subscribers even played games in the early 90's? Because the low relative placement of SNES and NES games are certainly telling.

Oh well. Better than EGM's list.

Imagine that, American and Euro GAFers have a different opinion on their favorite games than the Japanese do!

SHOCKER

Hey now, at least this list is better than that hyperbole NME list they put out a few weeks ago. Final Fantasy X > Arctic Monkeys

I don't think Sir-Techs Wizardries have ANYTHING to do with the Japanese Wizardries.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes and no.
The JPN series is an offshoot of the original game, which was semi-successful when it was ported there way back when. The rights were sold and it became its own seperate franchise. So same family, diffrent people. Think of them as fraternal twins.

They're not part of the main series, but they are "official" Wizardry games. Just check out the logo.

Most of the main series has been ported or remade for the NES/SNES/PSX/Saturn in Japan, and apparently when the official games dried up they just started making their own. I don't know how the licensing works, but I imagine they wouldn't be able to get away with using the official logo, especially for American releases, if it wasn't official. I think the only one to be released in America was Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land for the PS2, though. Wizardry: The Summoning for the GBA was appearently supposed to judging by the NA boxart, but it's probably been canceled.

So GAFFers, would you have rather liked GTA and Halo to make up the top 10 instead of FFs and DQs? I know where I would side. :)

1. Metroid Prime
1. Zelda Majoras Mask
1. Resident Evil 4
1. Perfect Dark
1. Banjo Kazooie

I don't really understand why FFX is on top, out of all teh FFs to choose from. Wasn't FFX a bit of a let down sales wise? Didn't Kingdon Hearts outsell it by quite a bit? You'd figure FF7 would on top.

It's all about the doujinshis, and I guess FFX has way more than the others. Hence easy win.

Every time ["better than EGM's list!"] is said in this thread, I just can't believe it.

Someone post a top 100 EGM list. Of anything.

This one's from 2001, so it's slightly dated. There must be a more recent one... I'll dig for it later.

Not an uncontroversial list either, I suppose (is that even possible? :), but I prefer it to the Famitsu one. The 1997 version had Tetris in the top spot -- I can never argue with any best-videogames-of-all-time list that puts Tetris in the top spot. :)
