"Nintendo said it was raising the Switch 2 price in Japan to 59,980 yen ($382), effective May 25, from 49,980 yen ($318), "in light of changes in market conditions, and after considering the global business outlook.""

It's "I need to buy a Switch 2 ASAP before the price increases next week" Week
Thx guys! - makes sense then, haha

PS5 sales are... very bad. The only thing saving it at this point is the digital version, and only because of price cut.
SW2 on the other hand is an absolute demon. Lets see if it continues after the price increases, I'm having a feeling it will not make that much of difference in numbers. I could be wrong.

I don't think Sony can do anything about it at this point. Losing hard on their own country should be really concerning, hope it was worth it.

I mean...what sales you expected from an home console in Japan especially in his endlife cycle with higher price than launch? Anyway it's not like is happened yesterday this decline. We are talking about 3 generation where traditional home consoles are irrelevant and pratically death in Japan. Maybe if sony wasn't that stupid and greedy to raise the price before the switch 2 launch, it could kept an average decent 15/20k per week but who can say it.

If Nintendo has enough stock this May will basically be an extra December month for them in Japan in terms of console sales.

Weekly Switch 2 sales will likely take a nosedive after May, but given that May will be like 2-3 ordinary non holiday sales months for Switch 2 in Japan it won't have any major short term implications. July will then see the release of Splatoon Raiders which should be the next period of increased Switch 2 sales in Japan.

Switch 2 sold more during the last 2 weeks in Japan than PS5 sold during all of 2026 as of yet.

PS sales under 10k while Nintendo got 200k sure something, and pragmata still survive albeit smaller
Japan always has surprise in many things and this trend is also surprising as well.

You tell that to both Sony and other countries. If they are willing to increase prices of a console on its "endcycle" and are willing to even extend PS5 lifetime, this argument hold no waters.
Also, they also still sell abit on the digital version more than the other models thanks to the permanent cut for this country only, which lowers the argument strenght even more.

I really don't follow you. Home console always sell shitty in Japan, surely a discounted DE sku (which sold worse than the base until the rising price and it was already cheaper) won't change anything in his endlife cycle And of course the cheaper model sell a bit more lol why shouldn't be the case, it's not like the difference in the price is minimal.

Ps5 pretty much killed by Switch 2. No japan centric exclusive to entice customers especially rpg and quirky games. Really blame Ryan for removing Japan Sony Hq and moving it to woke and dei infested california.

Wow tomodachi & pokopia both over 1 million. I thought they will cannibalize each other sales but turned out they both selling well.

I wonder if Nintendo will make a new animal crossing this gen, seems like new horizon will continue selling.

Switch 2 - 214,438 (5,367,660)
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition - 16,539
(1,283,342)
PlayStation 5 Pro - 5,248 (355,220)
PlayStation 5 - 1,973 (5,918,111)

Seems like Switch 2 will get very close to outselling the base Ps5 SKU LTD within its first year.

What if it's a bait-and-switch? Announcing price increases for September and then announcing in August that the increases won't happen after all

Doesn't matter because its Sony decision wheter is in its endcycle or not. From the look of it Sony isn't really onboard on ending PS5 support and was willing to raise prices of an old ass console.
And again your argument doesn't hold waters if the digital edition sold relativelly fine for a console on its end cycle thanks to its price cut, so this isn't the case. If what you said was true, not even the digital version would sell despite the price down, considering both base and digital were launched at same time.

PS5 is an old ass console and SW2 will eventually already beat it. The point here is the lack of interest and Sony worked real hard during years to make that happen. People there no longer caring about PS consoles and I doubt they would be willing to pick a PS handheld to play Last of Cuck and Intergalatic lesbian when they are more than happy playing Nintendo games like Tomodachi.

Embarrassing for what reason exactly? What sony could realistically do to avoid such "embarass"?

They embarrassed themselves by focusing on the west. They totally lost support on their own country, doesn't really get as easy to understand than that.

I'm leaning to think Sony estimated the level of the investment required to keep back the Japan wasn't worth it when they took their decisions. Not saying is "admirable" but it is what it is. And nothing guarantee things would have been much different. The only real big stupid thing was raise the price when ps5 sold decently. They should has have avoid it at all costs. But eh.
