"Worse than the original Castlevania on NES" seems to imply that it was bad... which it isn't. It's one of the most expertly designed games on the system, in my opinion.

I didn't mean to say that Castlevania looks bad. I know exactly where your coming from though. I had someone recently describe some game to me as "worse looking than yours" (the one I'm developing) but I understood what he meant to say.

Dangerous b/c of the copyright infringement, and frustrating because it plays like crap? Also, most Belmonts can make it to Dracula's lair inside a dangerous castle, Troy Belmont only made it to Dracula's poorly tiled bathroom.

Catching Drac unaware on the can? sounds to me like Troy Belmont is in fact the smartest of all, he's not going to let Dracula make it to the pinnacle of his oddly designed castle to prepare himself.

I think one of the better fan works was a NES-oriented remake of Simon's Quest. It seems the project was cancelled, and all gameplay footage of it is gone, but the composer left up his tracks. The tracks contain images of what the game looked like. It could have actually been played on a NES if it were finished..it has some phenomenal use of colors, considering it was intended for the NES.

It was going to be more like Metroidvanias, with bosses and relics to collect. I think one of the programmers said that there's enough free data with how the original game was done that the games content could have been tripled, and they were going to use all they could. I believe the artist behind that wonderful spritework vanished, so the project went on hiatus.

EDIT: A good, finished project is the pretty amazing Soul of Dracula.
